You're maybe going to have to be a little more specific there maybe more than one.

The first ESC that I know of (and I'm no expert) were supplied with the Tamiya Toyota Hilux circa 1981 advertised as electronic I am led to believe more like micro switches in reality.

For 1983 you are looking at a choice between a Demon 2S, Demon 2H or a Lazer Turbo. There were others around such as the little used Fleet Control Systems, ones made by local electronic engineers, and a wider range of 1/12th ESCs, but almost everyone was using a Bolink/Parma/Associated wiper arm MSC.

thought youd be the man terry, your a wealth of knowledge. i remember a blue anodised esc back in the day(no idea what brand) in a 834b which is what i want it for..next question is this, i have installed a futaba fp-2gs in the buggy and its 6volt the 834b has a 7.2 volt pack in the instructions what reciever had 7.2 in 83....thanks for all the help and time lads

No receiver back then was made for more than 6v. You used either a pair of silicone diodes in series, usually built into the mechanical speed controller supplied with the kit, or a 5v voltage regulator (readily available from any electronic component stockists) in the lead between the battery pack and receiver to drop the voltage down. Of course the problem with these is that when the battery voltage dropped as it discharged it reached a point when the voltage wasn't high enough to drive the voltage regulator.
BEC equipped receivers didn't appear until around 1986, then you could power them directly from the battery.

there is a diode hanging off the side of the switch on the manual speed control is that for voltage drop? possibly any one got an esc from 83 ;)

Yes, the diode will be there to give you the voltage drop.

Hi, I was using a 'Laser Bug' ESC in a Dogfighter back in '84, which I had bought 2nd hand so was probably at least '83 vintage. Single power (bipolar) transistor, 3 relays (FWD/REV, full power, and brake), included BEC for the Rx as well. I've still got it (including the photocopied hand-written instructions from Glyn Peglar), currently using it in my resurrected Optima.
