hi all
does anybody use that parma liquid paint mask stuff is it any good and easy to use do you just apply it with a brush and away you go ??
cheers paul:)
I have never used it, apparently, it is a brush on stuff, but you got to apply quite a few coats, otherwise it just flakes like hell when you co to peel it off.

If you're going to fork out the money to get liquid mask then forget the parma stuff and order some bob dively liquid mask off ebay. its a hundred times better, and half the price for double the amount. Ok you get the shipping charge but it still works out cheaper. I get mine from RCBoyz in the US.
the issue with flaking is the paint as opposed to the mask itself. when you use solvent based paints like pactra and especially tamiya, the paint that gets on the mask tends to flake away when you peel the mask off. the paint stays on the shell no problem, but you do get little bits of flaky paint all over the shell so you have to give it a wipe before putting the nex colour on. I generally use faskolor and this doesn't have the effect at all and is perfect for use with liquid mask.
Hope this helps ;)
you got a linkk for the Bob dively stuff Tel??

That should work.:eh?:
I usually order about 3-4 bottles at a time.
how many coats do you put on Tel, I understand it is about 3 or 4 thick coats ins't it?

yeah 3/4 thick coats. it takes about 1.5 hours to dry but you can stick it in front of a fan heater or something to dry it quicker. I normally coat them up when I know I'm going to be doing something for a while...like 1 coat before bed....a coat before I went to work etc. etc. that way it dries when Im out or something and doesn't interfere with anything I'm doing to much it just becomes part of the day. You don't have to sit there getting stressed with masking tape.
you brush it on? and how much does the four bottles cost to ship, plus how many shells do you reckon you get out of a bottle, roughly?

I'm also sure it can also be watered down and sprayed on. At least im sure thats what it said on a bottle I had a couple of years back.

it can be watered down and prayed on but the shells has to be immaculate after cleaning of it doesn't go on properly. if it going to be sprayed on it needs to go through a more 'industrial' airgun rather than an airbrush, that way it can go on straight out of the bottle.
I brush it on, 3-4 good coats.
I just ordered 3x 32oz bottles and it cost me £49. works out at £16.33 a bottle. I think I paid 12.99 for a 16oz bottle of parma stuff from over here.
I can get around 30 shells out of one bottle using faskolor or around 20-25 using pactra etc. (because the coats have to be thicker for solvent paints)
someone was on about getting you, Tel, to test some new liquid mask that they could supply in 25l containers, any news on this as yet?

No not heard owt yet.
Which is a shame as I'm about to order some more as I've run out nearly. I'll have to get some from JE for the time being, and order some 32oz bottles form the US.
Have you tried it yet?
I am just about to use some diveley stuff, I gave a go at spraying it on, and come to the conclusion, it is far to much hassle over painting it on.

Clean the shell well before you apply the liquid mask, but i dont re-clean the peeled off areas and have not had issues. I would be too worried about the mask lifting.
When cutting the liquid mask use a brand new scalpel blade and cut very lightly into the mask. If you push to hard you will score the shell and it will be prone to splitting if you have an accident.
Some of these pics below show liquid mask on a shell, my cutting it and the resulting transformers text and logo. These came out really well even if the overall body shelll was not really up to my original plan (but my issues with pink paint on this shell are another story).

Personally i love liquid mask. One you get used to the smell when it's drying. I cant comment about the Bob Div stuff, but the stuff i get from Apex Models stinks to high heaven when you heat it with a hair dryer.
Last points: dont get an dribbles in your paint mask, brush them out before it dries. Dont skimp on the layers or you will have trouble getting it off the shell. Find some tweezers from your first aid cupboard and givem them permanent asylum in your painting box.. they are useful you pulling the mask off.

Ahh, that'll be fasmask then? It smells like baby sick when it dries.
The divelys stuff is pretty much odourless when it dries.

I used that stuff on my first b4 shell its stunk then ones it leaked in my garage and it stunk the whole place out.

Just spent the last day or so giving my new ZX5 shell around 4 coats of liquid mask. Drew my design on the outside protective film then started cutting out the first areas of mask............
Even with a brand new scalpel blade it just tore the mask and lifted it away either side of the cut 3-4mm which would just allow bleeding
Have just finished re-masking it with tape on the inside after peeling all the liquid stuff off. Might get the odd bleed but at least it will be done in
time.
Any ideas where I went wrong? Mask was well cured. Brand new blade. Was looking forward to trying this method for a change. Inferior liquid mask even?

hi, which make of liquid mask did you use?
I only get this when there is a thick area on the shell where the masking film has collected, and then it hasn't quite dried properly (even though it is 'touch' dry)
Maybe the coats were too thick?
I've put 4 coats on before and not had a problem with it.
Not sure of the make - shall we say it was cheaper than you would spend I suspect...........
Regardless of that - it did go on okay and was fully cured - left in the sun for several hours after the last coat.
I can only guess that the new blade wasn't sharp enough and was tearing rather than cutting.

does this stuff dry like paint:confused: or is it more of a soft rubber coating:confused:
the 4 shells and one undertray I have coated in it, is like a tacky coating, it is latex.
Perhaps I'll buy the next lot of liquid latex from a fetish supplier - might get a better product lol :o

Incredibly quick postage, ordered at 1am or so night before last, on my doorstep this morning :) ... beats apex who managed to post half of my order sometime in the middle of the week after I ordered it sunday, then sent the rest recorded delivery to try and get it here faster to cover the fact that it was out of stock without ever warning me so I could order it from somewhere half decent
