View Full Version : Adding weight for stick lipos

I've almost completed the changeover for stick lipos in my car but I'm wondering how much weight I should be adding to the lipo side. In my touring car I've put about 150g on the lipo side to that the chassis balances and seeing as I'm using pretty much identical electronics in the pred I'm thinking I should be addding the same to that.

Just wondering how much you are adding to your preds?

I've got no weight added and i'm not far off balancing. From memory it's about 15-20g lighter on the lipo side. Although my lipo is 290g which is on the heavy side. I think the reason that you need more to balance you TC is on most cars the belt runs down one side of the car pushing the electrics out and moving the battery in.

yeah i run my'n twice now with lipo in and i haven't got any weight in it and it feels great, but i am going to put on the scale's this afternoon so i'll post how i get on

My electrics weigh almost exactly the same as the trakpower 4900. I run the lipo as far forward a possible and use 2 x 5g to seperate the lipo from the prop and 1 to keep the speedo away on the other side. I run 20g under the front shocks generally (but tune this depending on the track). Total weight comes out at about 1615g.

I posted a pic of my layout in the other thread which has the speedo up front and the servo layed down. I did this as it spreads the heavier items out on the electrics side and moves the weight slightly more forward.

I've played with ballast a fair amount but found this the best distribution so far.

Hope that helps, if you want any pictures let me know.

I've got my electronics laid out in the only way they'll fit so I've not got much of an option with them (I need a smaller speedo) and the lipo is being held in with one of timmys CF trays. I'll get everything on the scales and see how it looks before I stick them all down but it doesn't sound like i'll have to add much weight at all.

Cheers guys.

I'm not sure what speedo you run but the Tekin does help with getting a nice layout as its so small. To make more room i mounted the servo close to the motor which now means i have to take the whole motor mount out, but to be honest, how often do you need to get it out anyway (and its only 3 screws). Just thought i'd mention that incase it helps with your space.

Thanks Kev an RS pro is on the shopping list but funds are quite restricted at the moment so the GTB will have to stay for now.

I will also have to remove the mount to take out the motor but I haven't felt the need to change my 6.5, I've still got enough room to change the pinion if required so it's not a great issue.

I'll get some photos up later tonight when it's all back together.

at the moment I run 40g under the front shocks with a TP4900 lipo as far forward as possible on the right hand side. It handles great and weighs in at around 1650. I use an LRP sphere, futaba servo, KO receiver and x12 motor :)
Layout can be found here (http://www.oople.com/forums/album.php?albumid=230&pictureid=1242)

I've finished the car off tonight I've added 15g under each shock at the front and none anywhere else, I weighed the reciever speedo and motor and they came to around 260g which is about the same as the lipo if not a bit less.

The carbon fibre bits are all from timmy and look great cheers mate.

Hopefully I'll be giving it a run at sunday at coventry.

The car handled great, unfortunately I didn't have much track time due to an awkward landing.

At least I've got a template for drilling the holes now

how did you manage that?

I blipped the throttle whilst in the air over a double jump, came down hard on the back end. It's not the first snapped pred chassis I've seen but it's the first one I've seen snap at the back.

yeah have seen a couple snap at the front but never at the back

Try replacing it with the plastic chassis. Its had some mods to stop breakages. As well as being a little less stiff.

blooy hell man that is nasty, must of been given it some to rip the back end off

It was only the 2nd lap of round two, never mind a new plastic chassis, slipper clutch coupling, motor mount brace and hinge pins have been ordered.

I'm at worksop on sunday so fingers crossed it all arrives in time for me to glue the battery fillers in and get everything changed over.

I remember "back in the day" that Rich Savage broke a chassis in very similar fashion every run at Tivvy with his P8! I never managed to do it to mine though, thankfully.

The Cov track is a car killer though, I normally take a new car there to work out what spares I need to carry as if it doesn't break there you won't need those bits!!!!

must have been a pretty big crash to have done that, never seen that before. I've posted my lipo setup onto the setup section of the forum, take a look :) Hope you get the car sorted sooon.

Ouch!!! Ive never seen that done before!

Best of luck fixing it in time though

Back in the day I've done both.
Did you leave the screw out that fastens the ali post to the motor mount?

Thats what i was going to say... it doesn't look like the remains of the screw are in the post. Easily done though, i've left the screw out before, but luckily got away with it.

It is the single most important screw on the car :woot:

The screw was in as can be seen from the photo above the broken one the tube is also bent so it was in at the point of the crash but there's none in the tube. It's a bit of a mystery, maybe i didn't threadlocki it in properly and it worked it's way loose.

It looks like it might have ripped out of the end f the ali tube in the crash.... was it long enough? You can't beat a bit of length :woot:

maybe its stripped the thread out then? what length screw was in there? if there was not much engagement that may have been the cause.

Can you see from the tube if the thread is damaged and how far down its stripped?

All i can say is that all cars break, take a look below

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3MzTzrXrqM&feature=related

Guess its not only the preds that break their chassis ha :p. Yes there are more durable cars outhere but ALL cars can break , either from poor quality of a specific part that failed, either from bad luck and timing or from stupid driving.

That screw is the RC equivalent of the nut that holds the blades on a helicopter AKA 'The Jesus Nut' I suppose you could call it 'The Jesus Screw' but that doesn't quite sound right :woot:

There are a few stripped threads in the end of the tube so it looks like i didn't threadlock it in properly and it worked loose  this combined with an awkward landing must have been why the chassis broke.

All the replacement parts arrived today so top marks to Lewis and the team for getting them out to me so fast

Roll on worksop on sunday :D

'The Jesus Screw' :woot:

i will ask lewis to ammend the intructions :woot::woot:

like kev i havent gone with massive amounts of lead. just enough to get the car 10g over the limit. mainly at the front of the lipo for me as that suits me, so play around with the positioning once you have a nice setup (and a rebuilt car)

Would that be on the 8th Astro track at Coventry?

I've run a 10th there before - it ended in a big mess :eh?:

It was indeed, they have put some work in recently and the track is a fair bit smoother now though.
