Hi everyone,

Chileans don't really have a clue about life so the computer here (even though its less than a year old) is as slow as... a slow thing because of the 60 thousand useless antivirus and anti spyware programs that all scan every 3 seconds. There's also LOADS of random processes that shouldn't be happening but I don't know enough to know which ones shouldn't be there.

BUT... what I need is the best free antivirus software, and an anti spyware one too so that I can delete all of the rubbish and just have one.

Can anyone help??

Thank yoooou!

Download avg free edition. (just google it) It is a totally free antivirus and spyware package that works great. Also run msconfig from the "run" facility in the start menu and uncheck everything in there that you dont need to run on start up. You only really need about the first ten things if i remember right. This will speed it up a bit without having to do anything too technical.

Ad Aware (free) is just anti-spyware, not anti-virus. You need a virus checker as well unless you are fool enough to be paying them!

AVG is excellent, I have used it for years, always very well reviewed, and with better reviews than the paid-for software like Norton and McAfee which always used to clog up the computer (Norton in particular was a bee-atch to uninstall).

PS AVG try and hide the "free" edition if you go to their main site - go to http://free.avg.com to get it direct.

I use Avast and Threatfire. Both are free and together you cant miss any virus!

1. make restore point.

2. de-install all zillion anti-virus and anti-spyware.

3. clean all the crap from your computer with ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com).

4. install any of the anti-virus software above.

5. keep tracking of installed software. Install just the things you really need. Even if you uninstall any software, there are still remains of it in the registry. Better use an advanced de-installer like Revo uninstaller (http://www.revouninstaller.com).

6. Use ccleaner and ad-aware from time to time.
