Thinking of buying a digital SLR. Missing too many spontaneous pics of the kids. By the time i have pointed the Finepix, they have stopped what they r doing and the moment is lost. I Borrowed my dads Nikon D40 the other day when we went to the zoo. Could not believe the quality of the photos for a relatively cheap camera.

Who knows J concepts competition again..could stand a chance!!!

Have seen them for as cheap as 200 quid with an 18-55mm lense.
Is there anything of a similar standard/ better/ for similar money. Sony A200???

opinions welcome

All i would say is spend more time saving for the lens, more so than the camera itself, thats where the picture quality is really created.

LEAVE THE SONY SLR ALONE THEY ARE ABOUT TO STOP MAKING THEM, GO FOR A NIKON D70 THEY ARE AS CHEAP AS CHIPS NOW AND ARE STILL THE INDUSTRY STD , IF YOU HAVE A BIT MORE MONEY GET A D80 A BRILIANT PIECE OF KIT.

What makes you say the Sonys are about to stop being made? They have some serious cameras out there and a host of professional lenses.

I'm a Nikon man, the D40 is too small for my liking but that's great for family snaps etc. The D80 is a little bigger and you'll notice it more. My D3 is stupidly huge to the extent I never take it anywhere other than racing as it's too heavy & bulky.

Any of the DSLR's will be good I'm sure for your purpose - they can all produce great photos with the right settings / user.

Looking at reviews the d40 has more lenses available for it, one of which is on then end of my dads camera!! Not wishing for it to become a big hobby. All i want is really for family snaps, the occaisional buggy shot and piccies at superbikes!
