View Full Version : I fancy a Cat...

Just got back into RC after a 15 year gap and have caught the bug again after racing my Losi XXX-CR at EPR a couple of times...I now fancy a 4WD too so I can get into the action as much as possible, as I think all at EPR would agree I need the practice!!

There have been several Cats at EPR and I really like the look of them. I had a Procat as a kid so I like the idea of having another schumacher, and I also like the fact I can use my lipo sticks rather than needing to buy new saddles...

Looking on here, it looks like I'm best off getting the composite S1 as it looks great value for money and should be plenty for a novice like me. I like the idea of the chassis having more flex than c/f too and so making it easier to drive.

So i can get an idea of 'real' cost of buying one, could anyone suggest any particularly necessary spares to get aside from the normal wishbones, shock towers etc? As for extra bits and bobs I need to set it up... I'd be looking for an easy and driveable set up at first (not super-dialled) - and I'll be mainly driving it at EPR, so astro/concrete, couple of jumps, few bumps etc. I've read on here that the stock setup is the best place to start, but can that be said for all tracks?

Given my experience, I'm not one for drilling extra piston holes or sticking spacers everywhere as I'm not consistent enough to notice tweaks yet. Can anyone suggest a decent easy set up that just involves changing springs, shock oil, shock positions etc that will be good enough while I'm learning the feel of the car?

Cheers

Cheers for the link... Does the s1 version respond to these set ups in the same way as c/f version? And are all of these adjustments possible on it?

Dom,

only difference between the S1 is the material used for the chassis and steel vs. titanium hardware. Same hardware, etc. It should respond about the same setup-wise.

Nice one cheers.. And any necessary spares to get with it? Weak points on the car or hop ups to get straight away?

Dom,
Trekker runs an S1 Cat round EPR and is scary quick with it - or should that just be plain scary:woot:
Seriously, you won't be disappointed with an S1 - the Carbon is nice but is more expensive to replace when you break things - check out Racer magazine this month for the low-down on the S1 Cat - for the money it is impressive (and so is the CAT for that matter:thumbsup::thumbsup:).

As and when you get one - we can sort you a killer set up for EPR

As for weak points - much was originally written about the diff outdrives but the new ones should cure the breakages that was happening at full uptravel.
You'll get through a fair few rear bumpers at EPR with the transition into the concrete raceway corner.
Other than that - some Nortech whitey o-rings will smooth out the shocks and you can get separate suspension hanger screws from Nor-tech at the same time - I've not bent a standard one yet but I fear than I've not been trying hard enough.

Like anything - hit something hard and it will break.
Spur gears have been known to strip - especially with badly meshing and/or narrow pinions. A slight mod could see associated B4 spurs fitting on the layshaft if required.

The S1 (like the carbon ones) is permanent 4WD - many people like the option of the one-way layshaft roller.

Too much to write here before you fall asleep reading it.
Buy the mag, buy the car and get on down to EPR - we'll help sort it from there.

I'm sure if I've missed anything, Chris Long or others can chip in and fill in the gaps.
Good luck.

Cheers gnarly old dog! I'll work on convincing the wife I need another car and bring it down for practice over the summer!

I may have met you down there already.. Can you divulge your real name?!

These are replacement O-rings for your shocks. Each to their own but for me, the stock ones compressed too much during assembly which resulted in too much stiction for my liking (stiction = resistance caused by the o-ring friction on the shock shaft)
The Nortech Whities are slightly thinner which means that they don't have to compress as much during assembly. They also might be a slightly different material (shore hardness?) but that's getting a bit too technical for me. All I know is that they made my shocks work nicer.

HTH

Over to you Northy;)

And just for Dom - the real name's Andy. Next time you're down at EPR, come and say hello.
