Tamiya & Lipo's

Hi,

What do I need to do if i want to run Lipo's in my Tamiya, do I need to change the speed controller & motor or can i run my standard 540?

I guess lipo's also need an esc?

LiPo batteries need a compatible esc which won't allow them to explode if they drop below their minmum voltage. the standard Tamiya esc is not compatible! most brushless escs are compatible, but generally do not work with brushed motors like the standard Tamiya 540. go brushless, then go lipo.

thanks for that quick reply, I dont race (can't find a local club) and am more of a tamiya cruiser than a racer so think i will stick with my current set up for now :thumbsup: dont wanna have to fork out for the whole new setup, well not for now anyway!

Not necessary.

Simply bring the car off when it slows and you will not damage the LiPos.

If you are a total moron and cannot tell when your batteries are going flat then a cutoff may be useful. You can buy external ones like the Novak Smart Stop, so no need to upgrade your ESC.

There are also cheap as chips alarms and buzzers which do the same thing (except you have to stop the car yourself). £4 off eBay or so.

interesting food for though, will keep to old school nicads for now but will keep an eye out for lipo's in the near future

are there any advantages for running life span? the cost of a whole set up is a bit too much for someone like me :thumbdown:
