When I try to connect my Pro-Trak to my laptop I get this error each time I run the software.

Any PC savy people out there know how to fix this? It used to work in the past.

It is connected through a USB to serial convertor, but it is the same one I used last time. I think this is a "Jill Bates" problem, not a hardware problem.

Cheers,

it is a protocol that Win XP has that Pro-Trak uses when you connect it to the PC, it is to do with Visual Basic. You can try re-installing the software for the pro-trak, otherwise it gets a little more complicated.

You can search google for help to http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=mscomm32.ocx&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

You don't install the software really, just run it from a folder.

I tried google, but it confused me. Anyone got an idiots guide?

Try this: http://aics-research.com/qcterm/ocxfixersetup.exe

What the error means is that you have at least one outdated version of an OCX in your Windows/System folder. We've written a OCX correction program that will insure that the latest versions of all of the OCX'es that QCTerm uses will be put into your Windows/System folder. To perform this OCX update, download this small, self-extracting file:

ocxfixsetup.exe
and unzip it to the c:\ root, as it is primed to do. Once you've done this, run the newly unzipped file at:
c:\aics\ocxfixer.exe
Nothing visible will happen when you run the program, but it will update all of the necessary system OCX'es. Wait 10 seconds for the program to do what it needs to do and then run QCTerm. If everything works as it should, purge the OCXFIXER program. You won't have any further need of it.
The OCXFIXER program will update only those OCX'es that are older than the OCX versions that we've supplied. It will never cause you to revert to an older version of any OCX.

Disclaimer: I take no responsibility if this doesn't work and messes up your PC, i only found it on google. :p

Is there an mscomm32.ocx file in the folder that the Pro-Trak software runs from ?

Sounds like the usual "DLL hell" problem where one application installs a version of a shared library that another app depends on. Often the solution is to put a copy of the correctly versioned DLL in the app's directory (this is because Windows by default searches for DLLs first in the app dir, and then the system dirs. Well, usually. What version of Windows are you running?).

Have you found the file?..can you check which version/created date you've got on it? (right click/properties)

version tab etc

you might just be able to download a new(er) version

forget the above, it looks like the version of mscomm.ocx is all from 1998 anyway.

I downloaded the pro-trak software, extracted it and it runs ok. You could try doing that again.

failing that, have you run windows update recently? (assuming xp)

and failing that

start, control panel, system, click hardware tab, then device manager. do you have an ! or ? next to anything? (or any other strange yellow symbols). If so, remove them and reboot..xp should try to re-install anything it finds

dont blame me though if you break your pc :D

any idea if you've installed something recently?

try

Start
Run
msconfig (in the box that pops up) - click ok
click the startup tab
click disable all
remove internet connection, reboot and try your software again

do you have a firewall installed?..if so, try disabling that, it could be blocking the com port
