Wireless network IP conflict

I've just added another PC to my wireless network and now when I turn on the desktop upstairs I get a network IP conflict error and it can't connect.

Anyone know how to change it? The desktop upstairs has a Belkin card and utility.

The new (win 98) pc has a Linksys card and utility.

Its not the 98 pc thats complaining, its the XP desktop.

The 98 pc is to connect to my Protrak in the garage as the software has stopped working on XP :mad:

are you letting window manage the wireless network or the wireless card utility ? i let window manage mine

Northy, try (from explorer)

tools
internet options
connections (its a tab)
LAN Settings (button near the bottom)
there should be a tick box that sais something like
"automatically detect settings", make sure its ticked.

click ok ok ok etc and make sure you do it on all the PC's.

close internet explorer and restart them, fingers and toes crossed it should "automatically detect settings":wtf:

if it doesnt work first time, reboot the PC's and check the changes you made stayed (tools options connections etc again)

Agreed that windows does a better job of managing the wireless networks than most of the software than comes with the cards!

If im not mistaken ( go on im waiting for it.....LOL), you should be able to change the ip addy of the wireless card.

Your prob getting a conflict cos there both using a generic ip addy

I would certainly begin by checking the Internet Protcol (TCP/IP) settings on the wireless card is set to "obtain IP address automatically"

Then go into the router set-up. There should be something in that which lists the sub-ips its giving out to the computers that connect to it.

If you goto network connections in XP control panel, click the network, check packets are been sent and received, if not click support, then click repair ;)

If that doesn't work, try re-installing the software, or restarting your PC, or restoring your PC back to the day you put it on, and start-a-fresh.

Sometimes connections are fickle. If I want to active sync my PDA to the PC it can be buggy and take up to 3 try's:confused:

2 questions:
Have you named the computers differently? (e.g. Northy 1 and Northy 2 etc.) and can you see their IP address's in the properties of either your wireless network software or MS network manager?
Which PC is your main PC? i.e. which opperating system etc?

You need to make Windows control IP, and set it to automatic, so when you boot up the comp, it searches for a free local IP adress. My concern is the fact the main PC could be XP and the other win98 (not the most easiest to work with).

Thats great for finding what setting are etc. Personally, I would look at giving the win 98 PC an IP address.

It's a while since I've used 98, but I would turn off the laptop. and the 98. Restart your main pc (XP) and then turn on your 98. See if it accepts a IP address automatically. Check by using the instructions on the 'clicky'.

Note down the number (10.12.95.xxx or something like that!)

Now turn on the laptop and see if you get the conflict.
If you do. Go back to the 98 and follow the 'clicky' instructions but instead of choosing auto go for give an address. Then input the address from before and change the last digit up a couple.

Your main XP should be able to pick up the change when you search for network members. As the address wont change each time you boot up, XP should recognise it and assign a different address to your laptop when that's on the go.
