View Full Version : Which brushless ?

Hi, as many of you, I'm looking to take the brushless route. It will be for a X-5 and later a B4.

It's for racing only so I'm looking for very good power control, I guess it will be a sensored one. Probably 5.5 and 6.5 for 4WD, 6.5 and 7.5 for 2WD.

I didn't considered the GM system as it seems to let the magic smoke go out very easily...:D A friend of mine, GM driver, used (smoked) 4 units on 4 runs !:o

The Mamba seems to be too brutal/wild, and nobody has seen the Tekin one yet.

GTB pro's : reliable, reverse drive possible (good for trainings), easy to find cheap

GTB con's : massive with his fragile fan, seems to NEED a fan for anything more than a 6.5, can make some glitches

LRP/Nosram pro's : looks more efficient (no fan required unless you use a 3.5), more adjustable (punch control mainly), some says it's smoother, looks better to me

LRP/Nosram con's : no reverse (why ? It's only a software thing), maybe less reliable (at least for the old versions)

Those are only bench and internet rumors, so I'd like to have your advices, specially if you have own both !

Thx;)

I keep talking to myself here :D

Anywayz, I think I am going to the LRP/Nosram route now. My question is : is it okay to use an original Sphere (not Comp) for 2WD with a bonded 7.5, maybe 6.5 ? Or would it be pushing it hard ?
The reason is I like the reverse mode of the original Sphere. It will save me some trips down the drivers' stand to self-marshal my car

if its for racing only u shouldn't need reverse and its illegal in the UK at nats
lrp/nosram all the way

its not illegal at the national's, nothing about it at all in the rule's. been over this a while back with paul worsley. reverse is fine to use at any brca meeting

Yes, but you can change the mode for Fwd/brake only, and I live in France and here nobody cares if you make the entire run in reverse :p

According to the LRP Website

LRP Sphere Brushless #80500 is ok for
7.5t #50661
6.5t #50671

LRP Sphere Brushless comp #80700 is ok for
5.5t #50681
4.5t #50691

7.5t, 6.5t, 5.5t are bonded, 4.5t is sinitered (not that I have a clue what that means!!)

As for reverse (legal or not), I hate it, theres nothing worse than someone reversing into your path because they have crashed...You just dont expect it. I hate to make generalisations, but it tends to be people who are newer to racing and dont really consider other drivers

I run the Mamba Max and it's excellent. Really nice and smooth power delivery, good and controllable. You can set it as forward only, or reverse. Before I bought it I wondered whether it was going to be only good for 'bashing' but no, it's totally raceble - top notch.

The Mamba max (motor) is not BRCA legal. This is not a dig, its just information for people who might be thinking of buying one.

Whats the census on LRP/Nosram Speedos blowing. ive seen one do it and seena fair few pictures of them gone up in smoke. Anyone know if this is user fault or they do this spontaneously?

:) I hope it's not spontaneous as both my son and I have the latest Nosram systems. I havn't seen any smoke yet but mine did seem to cut in & out possibly due to high temperature caused by overgearing, I lowered the gearing and havn't had a problem since.:)

The people i've spoken to have had no problems with their LRP systems either.

Novak all the way. Novak is the forerunner and the rest just copy novak.

The novak fan is crap but just change with a Muchmore fan.

LRP also should have a heat sink and fan, but makes the customer buy one.

GAYO: Why would you want a bonded rotor?

I do not have one, but, from what I am told the sitered rotor

1. helps the ESC run cool

2. increases torque

3. has more "natural" dead stick braking making it feel more like a brushed motor.

I ran the LRP last night and it was fantastic. The car felt so driveable and smooth. I can't recommend this system highly enough.

Big thanks to Rich Lowe and Vermin for all their help and tips.

Because, when running 2wd on slippy dirt, it seems better to have less torque and less "natural" braking.
That's what Kurt Wenger says on rc10b4.com :

My Brushless setups:

Buggy-
Sphere Comp 2007
X11 7.5 turn
20/84
2-1-3-3

Truck-
Sphere Comp 2007 w/ heatsink
X11 6.5 turn
optional sintered rotor
18/87
2-1-0-1

4wd-
Sphere Comp 2007 w/ heatsink
X11 6.5 turn
optional sintered rotor
20/81
2-2-1-1

I normally run -10% throttle EXPO on all the cars. For even smoother bottom end I will go up to -15%.

Of course, on astro or on grass, the sintered should be better.

Gonna see about getting a brushless setup this or next week and it looks like its between the Novak and LRP. Anyone got any pics of how to mount the gtb without having to murder the shell

if its that good why does it need a fan (thats crap)?
and you do get a heatsink with lrp/nosram

So, went to the LHS and im pretty much set on getting the original LRP Sphere with a 6.5t motor. Whats the view on the original sphere?

NeilD
03-04-2007, 02:11 PM
Yes you do get a heatsink with the LRP.

The latest LRP has better hard/software. I don't know much about last years version but '07's is supposed to be far superior.

The sintered rotor is standard on the 4.5

make sure you gear it ok and have ventilation as they are prone to thermalling on hot days!

This is true, but i was meaning don't gear it as you would a brushed motor.
