My Norton subscription runs out in about a week, and I cant afford to renew it....

Does anyone know of any DECENT (and free) antivirus/firewall softwares at all?

For the record itll be going onto Vista.

Thanks :)

AVG if you must. But it's got a crap detection rate

Novatech are selling Kapersky very cheap and I'd go with that.

I've had to wipe a machine due to a virus dispite AVG running at the time.

Now have a free copy of Kaspersky (from some scheme in work) and it does indeed detect a lot more things...whether they are all real or not I'm never really sure, but it does seem to be more effective IMO.

Similar to what I have seen

Check out Novatech or Overclockers.

Well im kinda hoping that having stopped looking at pr0n everyday like I used to will stop the amount of things trying to wreak havoc on my machine lol

Ive used Norton for years and years, and never had a problem, but im broke :(

Nights racing in Caldicot vs Kaspersky....I can see the predicament! Go with AVG mate and don't click yes on random popups!...more fun ;-)

dont go on dodgy sites then u wont have a problem. i haven had a virus scanner runnin on my pc for the last 4 years or more. dont see the point, if your not lookin at weird sites that well known to alot of ppl( so not pirate software sites and porn) you wont have a problem, an if u do go on them sites, jsut watch wot your downloading if it looks dodgy the chances are it is

I use Avast! which is the same as AVG. I find it very good. I also use spybot-search&destroy which has a realtime checker that lets you know if anything is trying to install itself on your system. If you have enough ram to run it without slowing you up too much then I recommend that.

For more info and a safe place to download stuff from check out www.download.com . Its always the first place I check

Well you wouldn't even know if you were infected so thats not very clever imo.

Vista does have a firewall and it's just like any other software firewall..

Make sure you've got a hardware based firewall which I assume your broadband router should have.

Internet --- Router Firewall -- Software Firewall -- YOU! (Can't be bothered to do a Visio diagram)

I've never had a virus or been compromised at home. I don't visit on install dodgy software period!

(if I really have to I do it in a VM thus not compromising the main system)

If you have kids etc. (I don't) only make them a basic user, so they don't have admin rights etc. Make sure you install the MS Windows updates etc

you can tell if your infected by looking at you task manager. i know exactly wot each one of the processes running on my computer are so i know that there not viruses. you can also tell cos most of them are adware an they will pop up messages asking you to buy stuff
