View Full Version : Would you buy a Cat XLS re-release?

I have mentioned this to Robin Schumacher a few times, I think as per tamiya's business model (old kits re-released such as hornet, lunchbox, hotshot etc etc) that the old schumacher cars would sell again - of course Schumacher aren't anywhere near the scale of operation which Tamiya are, and they may or may not still have the moulds however I want one and would be 1st in the queue to buy a re-released Cat XLS kit!
I wonder if the cost of remanufacturing them would outweigh the profits received from selling the kits?
I think the original Cat XLS would be great for a single marque/model class and maybe even the bosscat/topcat/procat/cougars could be remade.....I'd primarily be after a Cat XLS with silver wheels though painted as per box, black/yellow & red!
Thoughts?

I've got a mint never run Pro-CAT that sits on my shelf looking pretty that I paid a small fortune for. I also have a heavily modified Pro-CAT that I one day want to run. So I would stand to lose out financially as these would be worth a hell of a lot less than they currently are if they did a re-release of the XLS. But I'd still love to see it, and I would probably buy one too.

I still think the Cougar 2 could be used as a "Budget" racer type car too with all the RTR stuff that's around now?
I know they did the Club 10 but the basic Cougar 2 car would still be good enough as a low level budget RTR car - it was strong as hell too with that chassis

I emailed Robin a few years ago abour re releasing the XLS to celebrate the 21st anniversary of winning the Worlds. His reply went something along the lines of " the XLS was a great car in it's day, but times have moved on and it won't be competitive." He completely missed the point of a reissue of the car. It's an obvious money spinner if Tamiya are doing it.

I would support a one make/chassis class - that would be great!
Tamiya seem to be reaping the rewards of the 30 something's (me and quite a few of you I bet!) who couldn't afford or nag enough to get the RC car of their dreams in their youth who now have grown up and got back into RC and have real jobs hence now have the urge to purchase the kit for sentimental reasons, this is no doubt what Tamiya are playing on with the re-released kits.
I am a strong believer that people all over the world have a soft spot for the original Cat XL/XLS/SWB.
Have just emailed him again!;)

I hope you get a positive response from him. Tooling costs could well be an issue as well.

I love the idea.
There are so many people on here who can relate to these cars from when they were younger and would buy them for nostalgia.

Personally I'd rather have a Procat. Yes I know, SWB for true history (but they were terrible to drive) XLS as it was the '87 worlds car, but really the definative version of the series has to be the Procat.
Likewise I like old RC10's, but to me despite the nostalgia of the old 6 gears, the Stealth gearbox is what really made the car.

SWB, the first one, just as it came out with the black wheels etc, I would order one right now:thumbsup:. It would be nice as I have never seen one up for sale so I don't think anyone would get upset about it comming out again.

I prefer the Procat but still have a soft spot for the XLS as this was the first Schumacher car i raced, got it as christmas present just before the Procat came out.
I would buy either if they went back into production.
It would also bring many old cars back to life with the availability of spares.

I have a brand new xls kit but I don't really see a point in a re-release. I guess for a collector sure, and yeah I love my XLS, but I don't know if I'd be temped by a new one. Maybe I'd get an RC10 gold tub if they re-released it (I have 2 new already) but even that I'm not sure. I saw a seller on ebay sell a whole load of rc10 gold tub kits a few years ago, the first few sold for high money and gradually they fell to about 100 quid or so and no one was buying. Unlike Tamiya, I think these racing brands don't have a high enough following. Just enough people interested to make kits like mine worth a lot - but probably not enough to make a re-release viable.

lol I don't have many, just ones I collected a while ago. The last one I got was an ranch pit stop (rps) 834b dogfighter, 275usd buy it now on ebay! bargain! I just have some old cars that were dreams back in the day - I have original optima, ultima, progress and optima mid turbo kits. SG Tag coyote, the 834b, 870c yokomos. tomy intruder. Ayk 566b, ayk bobcat. Loads really haha.
The ones I really would like are a pb mini mustang or maxima kit - there have been loads on ebay.de over the years. I've even bid on a couple but Typisch design always beat me.
And a Yankee Electra. There was one on ebay fairly recently but too much money. A friend a few years ago used to travel to some far-east country on business. There was a shop with pb and yankee buggies - about 10 PB kits he said. He bought a yankee for himself, built and painted it with a 1-can job and was gonna get me a couple but lost his job and didn't go back. So I missed out and when he offered his new build 1-can car I wasn't interested - I prefer kits personally anyway.

I'd do a re-re, for sure.
If nothing else, it would help me find a few of the missing parts I need to finish some of my works in progress... :)

If nothing else, re-pop the original SWB body and undertray. PLEASE! I need three, at least. :)
