I am running a CAT 2000 this year outdoor (laydown shocks version). Does anyone know what the merits of the different chassis are:

EC / SE saddle pack vs 98 Side saddle.

Which do people recommend?

Thanks in advance,

Chris P.

I would run the later side saddle pack chassis set up for sure. The car is better balanced all round.

Agreed - i ran the Side saddle car back in 99 and it was definitely better, i think it had a bit more flex so was a tad more forgiving too - plus jumped a lot better.

Good luck anyway, such a great car and i'm sure it will still go well today if the driveshafts can handle the power

Thanks guys,

considering there's a 4.5 sintered brushless going in it, I hope the drive train is strong enough.

Ive upgraded to RW racing machined diff pulleys and RW machined spur, alloy tranny housing, ceramic diff balls and ceramic bearings. Like you say Nick, aslong as the driveshafts hold up, I will replace the blades at the first sign of wear.

I'll try to set the slipper to protect them aswell., I cant wait, Im not expecting anything big from the car, but having tried a Lazer ZX-5 and an Xfactory X-5 last year and not happy with either, I dont see why I shouldnt go back to a car I was happy racing, even if it is a 10 year old + design.

Chris, are you able to get parts easily enough for it? What about shocks, are you running Schumacher shocks and pistons? We used to run Losi pistons in the Schumacher shocks but ideally i'd run Associated shocks personally.

The car will still be good, it lived with the XX-4 in it's last few years and that hasn't really changed so i'm sure on the right track it will be awesome. Will still take a fair bit of setting up when it gets to bumpy stuff but on any sort of smooth track i'm sure it'll generate enough grip to live with anything else out there.

I'd love to see one going again with todays motors & batteries, enjoy it ;)

Ive managed to get 5 spare cars, and I know a LHS which has mountains of spares, so I have more than enough.

Ive currently got Schumacher shocks on with Associated pistons. Im fairly happy with the shocks, but I might try associated ones if I cant get it to handle.

Like you say, the challenge comes with bumpy tracks. Any tips will be most welcome. I like to spend time setting the car up, so advice will be really useful. It makes up for the poor driving.

yeah the XX4 is still competitive there is no reason why this car shouldnt be.

;)

Enjoy your racing, and the attention you'll get from having a unique car. ;)

You'll never believe it but literally having been thinking about the old days of racing my Cat i thought i'd quickly mail one of my Dad's mates that had one of my Cat's a long time ago and he's STILL GOT IT! He's offered to lend it to me for the Regional this weekend at Lee's (CML Raceway) so i've said yes :D It's still in mint condition with my nice old shell and all electrics so i'm really going to enjoy running it on Sunday if it goes ok. Lee's track is nice and smooth so i'd hope it would be pretty good round there to be honest. No idea what wheels/tyres he's got though...... I don't suppose you know of anywhere selling un-used rims??

Could do with them by Saturday really though........

Haha this is so funny, i am really retro-ing it up at the moment having raced by old B3 over the last few months.

Do schumacher not have any rims left?

If not, try Apex, they used to have mountains of Schu stuff.

Old Skool Fastrax rims, I remember them.

As for other suppliers, have you tried Chris Rowcliffe, in case they have any old stock of Schumacher rims from the ballistic buggy molds.

I used to love my CAT 2000 EC, full carbon, alloy gearboxes, alloy rear pivot blocks, alloy screws, purple everywhere!!! :D

I think I've still got a Touring Car upgrade kit for a CAT 2000 (towers, and ickle shocks and body mounts)

Aha, nice one - i didn't realise you could get spares direct from Schumacher! £32.00 for 3 sets of rims seems damn expensive though  still if needs must and all that.

The blade style driveshafts in the aluminium out-drives will be a disaster with a hot motor combo, of that I'm sure. Elsewise, should be great!

Try retromodelisme, the biggest resource of old Kyosho and Schumacher manuals.

Most old Schumacher manuals are also in the manuals section of Tamiyaclub.

Lo siento Alfonzo, I have to disagree here :)

I raced my Cat 2000 98 (side saddle) until recently, on astro tracks with a crazy 10x1 Revolution and the latest 4200 Corally and the tranny held up fine, better than my X-5 for sure. :p

Just be sure to stock on some blades and change them at the first signs of wearing, it can be every 3-4 runs on some tracks like Kampenhout.

Handling is amazing on this car. The only thing I see that makes it slightly out-of-date is its lack of forward bite (motricity ?), specially on blown-out tracks. Killer car on carpet ! I love it.
