Brushless motor suicide!?

I did a couple of laps of practice on sunday with the 4WD and LRP sphere (non comp) with a 3* motor. and the pinion was a bad fit for some reason, it would barely reach the spur but I thought nothing of it and got a fairly decent mesh anyway.

I set off for my practice anyway and only did a couple of laps before the car just stopped.. The pinion had come completely away from the spur (and chewed it up), the entire motor shaft had loosened from the magnet and punched out of the back of the motor!

I looked at a 4* that someone donated and it had a larger diameter shaft (inside the can) even though it's a similar looking motor - not the newest X11 style.
Is this a common problem, and is there anything I can do? Do LRP/Helger fix this problem or am I just out a motor?
It's nothing I've done, I don't drive fast enough to hurt motors.

hopefully jimmy i will be able to answer that question over the next few days.. i sent my 2* off yesterday to helgar after mine had a melt down on sat doing 2wd. even after gearing down 3 pinion sizes the solder within the motor ended just a melted blob !!!!!! and then motor can changed to a nice colour :( ....

This wasn't even warm but I guess the magned thingy had become loose over time. Ah well, I guess I will send it in and see what they say.

to put your mind at ease, i sent my x11 brushless off last week on wednesday afternoon, and i got it back on friday morning, fully repaired. Have to say, that was seriously quick, really impressed!!

Yeah always had good service in the past when I sent LRP products in, but this being a Motor I wasn't sure what they would say.. Obviously with brushed motors they can get damaged with misuse etc - but I've not 'abused' this motor - the magnet just came loose and got looser.
But, good to hear they sorted yours out quick..

vermins did this too, assuming the motor is OK why not upgrade to a sintered rotor for about £20, Bally sells them at MB Models!

Helger are really good at replacing them Jimmy, I've had about ...ahem, well a few sent back and I do tend to butcher them.

I've had problems with the shaft coming away, the magnets disintegrating and the screws holding the motor together snap and helger have been brilliant.

All I would say is I'm waiting for a 3star to be returned, but they are waiting for stock:( so you might be in for a little bit of a wait too (oh and if they decide you killed it, I think they charge about £20 to fix which is still cheaper than a new one!!)

Yeah upgrading to a sintered rotor might fix the faulty motor, but would make the motor NON-BRCA approved. Of course still good for club and practice, but not for any sanctioned meetings.

Seems I may be on a bum steer here, not only due to legality but due to different size bearings on the * motors against the X11 sintered ones.

However the reason I keep going on about them is that they are ace (Novak ones anyway), feel more like a brushed motor, more tolerant on gearing, more reliable (as a generalisation), cooler running speedo etc etc.

I'n resisting the potential here for an Mtroniks brushless jibe ;)

ive found that brushless motors dont like too rev ie wheelspin could this have been the problem at tivvy because ive never seen failure rates like there the mudfish team two motrs three speedos all nosram speedos and novak motors one sintered one bonded:(

Just got a replacement reconditioned motor back from Helger, only sent the other in on friday so good service.. the motor looks to be in similar nick to the one I sent in so I can't complain at that. :)

Just stripped my nosram storm down and found that its come loose from the magnet as Jimmy's but the shaft has gone forward and it had almost come out of the end bell bearing. i have moved it back into position now.

Do we think this will slide again ???

and its a nosram so it has to go back to mirage who havent been good service to me at the moment.
