Hi,
I did a couple meetings with a 1/8th rallycross car before the money ran out just under 2 years ago so i have most of the basics down ok, and although trying to avoid the usual "wich ones am betterest???" threads, i could use some advice on all this electronic trickery stuff that apparently doesn't accept fuel or make a nice smell and noise?

Looking at a 2wd atm really due to my sideways tendancies, hate of understeer and love of steering with the rear and starting to settle on a B4 after talking to a couple of people about it (Thanks Paul ;)) but I'd like a few peoples input on a decent motor/ESC/battery setup on a budget (partly so I can stop bugging the one or two people I have been about it) motor wise i'm looking at a venom fireball 19t atm as a couple of people have had them and said they were ok motors for the money and lasted out alright and gave a fair amount of power.

ESC i'm totally lost on really, am i right in thinking that reverse speedos aren't allowed at most events? Is it something that is a highly integral very important part of your setup or can it be used a cost cutter on a budget with little performance change? I'm guessing it's a good idea to get one with a limit lower (higher? faster anyway :p) than 12turn.

Battery wise i was advised to pick up enough for 3 packs, which pretty much leaves me with sanyo 3000 Mah cells for my money (unless i can up the budget somewhere or cut it on something else) is it possible to run a days racing on two batteries? that way I could get 2 GP3300 packs (which i'm told are awesome batteries :p) and pick up an extra later

Sorry for the essay and thanks for any help you can give :)

19t turn is the cheapest way to start really, try the checkpoint, last's age's before skim and brush change
esc, reverse can be used at any event it is NOT illegal to run at a brca meeting
cells you really would need 3 packs to run at most meetings, only run the cells twice a day.

i use a LRP super reverse digital esc. and i have had no probs at all. it came with MY rtr b4rs. think they retail in shops at around 74.99, but im sure there cheaper elsewhere (ebay:) ) i use a venom racing 3600 stick pack, and that is also pretty great, nice punch on acceleration. (off this topic, why should you only use one battery twice per meeting???) but yeah, as a beginner myself i have been using a reedy 17t and it is a nice nippy motor for a beginner, but once you see other cars whizzing down the track it does seem a little slower. but thats only on the straights. otherwise it can keep up with many higher class motors on the bends and out of them.

hope i helped. :)

ESC wise i found a Novak XRS Sport Reversible Electronic Speed Control (15T+) not really sure if i'd want to get an ESC that can handle 12t just in case/for when i wanna drop down (up? this turn thing is like scoring golf) to a 12t, although I can always sell the ESC on, it'd probably be at a loss, but a more 'copable' loss as it doesn't come with the big wallet hit of a new car :D

There is racing at CML track south of Newbury on Sunday, would it be worth your time to pop in for a look round, meeting is 4WD regional, we had the 2WD two week ago, but lots of advice if you can find drivers with time to talk.:)

If you want a fast 19t motor get a corally black edition there slightly more exspensive but the are a very fast 19t motor. And have amazing acceleration. As for speedo. See if you can pick up a cheap second hand nosram dominator evolution off ebay. Limit is either 5turns or 7 turns and as everyone is going brushless there will be alot of people selling them.

As for cells speak to neil at www.stormforceracing.co.uk (http://www.stormforceracing.co.uk) Sanyo 2400 are fine for 2wd with a 19t motor or if you want extra punch and duration get. His IB 4200.

as off-road don't have a 19t spec class it seems stupid to try and get 'the best' 19t motor for extra money, why not just get a 'cheep' 17t or something like that??

i wish i had the money to go brushless. mind you, hsbc in town looks pretty easy......

Because chris this 19t has the ability to compete with modified motors. And personally venom motor's are not that quick. My friend had a 15t venom motor and i had a reedy 19t quad spec and i had alot more torque and top speed than him. So i think that a fast 19t motor is a better idea than a cheap higher turned motor.

Speedo wise i'd look at the older generation of top speedo's such as Novak Cyclone, LRP IPC V6 or V7.1 - These are on Ebay for around £25-35 tops and honestly are still well up to the job. They have no motor limit, and tend to be pretty indestructable.

Overwhelming amount of help, thanks guys :D I knew about the CML race but unfortunately I'm working both saturday and sunday (I'll get taken off the 'weekenders' list when I start racing obviously :p)

On the motor front at the moment I'm looking for something that gets me round slow and steady really, I've not driven anything competitively for just under 2 years and even then I only did a couple races. I've been offered a Peak Dynasty V2 for £15, a name that even as a nitro man I recognise so they cant be too bad :)

Speedo wise i'll try and keep an eye out for those mentioned on ebay, although the 25-35 "tops" ones are currently going for 50+ with days left on auction, the 1 or 2 i found.

You tend to get a lot of stuff listed up for sale on the walls at your local club, regional, or indeed any race meetings.

Keep looking at the speedo's. This week they'll be silly money, next week they'll be giving them away...

If anyone does see a B4 for £50-75 let me know :) although it may be next month (pay day \o/) til I can get it really

Thanks to a bit of help, I'm finally getting close to racing again :) Jim76 is squeezing the money out through my nose for most of my set up :D (batteries, car possibly, motor) I have a vega V3 for a speedo that I picked up for £20 a while ago for my mini t, and I'm way over budget because I really underestimated the cost of some decent hex drivers and oils etc, but it's payday soon so nevermind ! :p The only thing that seems to be a sticking point atm is chargers, the orion advantage looks nice to me, but I'm getting mixed opinions and they seem to sell rather high on ebay (70-80 mark compared to 60ish for a pulsar 2)

edit: I lied, another sticking point is a power source for charger, generator is a little out of my price range atm, and I don't really fancy the hassle of the fuel, noise (yeah i know I raced nitro but they smell nice and make a far nicer sound :p) What do most people use 12v battery wise? most i looked at were rather pricy for something that did more than one charge without going kaput

Charger just got unstuck, got an orion advantage in an as new condition for £57 :)

nice one, that's a good charger.

there are only really two options, generator or leisure battery. A cheap gennie will cost you about £50, and a basic 70amp leisure battery will cost you around £30+ (don't get the halfords one!) and another £20 or so for a charger.
the battery has some benefits like you can use it at home to charge. also if you plan to race at any indoor clubs then obviously the gennie isn't an option!

I already have a simple plug it and go leisure battery charger, cost me about £15 i think, it's simple but it worked fine on my yuasa til i left racing for a bit and the battery no longer holds a charge, but that was a 7Ah battery, great for charging 1050 mAh receiver packs, not so good for doing 3 GP3700's ! :o

why not the halfords one?

i got a leisure battery form the caravan store in huddersfield, crosland moor to be precise. it was 39.99 with 12 month gurantee and charges a 3600 battery at least 8 times fast

Hi mate, sounds like you're getting sorted and almost ready to go. If you're short a speedo I've got an mtronics Viper 11 brand new in pack that you can have for half price if you like. They're over £50 new but yours for £25 with free delivery. Will handle down to 11 turn and can have reverse on or disabled.

Good luck, hope you have as much fun with the B4 as I am doin in my first year racing. ;)
