Does the 3/32" diff balls spin?

Hi was wondering if the 3/32" balls that tighten down the diff spin when in the car? or is it just used to tighten down the diff?

just asking to see whether i should upgrade them to ceramics.

Not entirely sure what you mean, the balls should not slip but spin against the plates when the diff is - erm, diffing! :)

The Ultima RB5 felt good after a National, but it was a fairly loose surface. The ZX5 diff balls were a bit soft - as are the Tamiya 501X balls. Some Ceramics or Carbide balls would be a good idea for sure.

ok the 3/32" thrust balls (i think thats what there called) spins when the diffs are working? or they just used when tightening up the diff.

i just wondering if they only turned when tightening up the diffs... in which case standards should be ok.

a more direct question, does the 3/32" balls need to be upgraded to better qualitiy ones.

i know the 1/16" ones people have problem with them

I think I know what you mean! The thrust bearing rotates whenever the two wheels are not going at the same rate i.e. whenever the diff is diffing - almost all the time. The bolt is connected to one outdrive and the thrust bearing lets the bolt head rotate in the other outdrive. So it's not just for when you're tightening the diff.

p.s the walawala 1/16" ceramics i have in there are still in as new condition after 100 packs.

I have fitted some atomice carbon ceramics to mine and they are silky smooth and very reasonably priced.

Mine will be running briefly at cml on sunday during practice if anyone wants a look or to have a go.

i also run ceramics in the thrust race, i find these just as important as the main balls. possibly more so as this is where most of the dirt and grit gets etc.
