Are the Tekno conversion kits with the clutch system any good, (for a d8)? and how many cells can you fit in them.
Which motor/speedo systems are any good without going mad on money. Castle, Losi, M-tronics, Novac, ect?????
Thanks!

Read Marvins beginners guide to 1/8th Elec, I am sure he will bring you up to speed on the latest development, I know he is playing with a RC Monster sliperential with good results!
Take a look at the RC Monster website, they have a good forum

I don't particularly like the Tekno conversions, they have too much flex in my opinion which can ruin the mesh or the pinion teeth.
Theoretically you can fit an ulimited number of cells in there. See my guide for help on batteries. (http://www.oople.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29316)
If you want to get the ESC/Motor combo from the UK, then the Castle Creations system is the only way to go. To run on 4S, I'd use the 2200kV motor, or 3S I'd use the 2650kV. Ask at your LHS whether they get their Castle stuff from Flighttech Distribution - the Mamba Monster will be cheaper there than from Horizon UK. This system can run on 6S.
The M-Troniks system just doesn't appear up to scratch, neither does the Novak system - it is just too old, and the motor kVs are in the wrong place (they are too high).
The Losi ESC is not good at all, but their motors are fine. One thing to watch out for though, are the crap stock screws holding the motor endbells on - their heads snap off.
Avoid the Speed Passion, it is an overpriced version of this (which is actually better than the Speed Passion - it can handle 6S LiPo and 150A continuous) (http://www.rc-monster.com/proddetail.php?prod=HW150caresc) with a bent piece of metal on it. The motors are slightly longer 540-sized, so won't have the torque that you'll really want.
LiPos are something to really look into. As I say in my guide, (http://www.oople.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29316) you should spend most of the cash here, getting decent LiPos.
As Mark says, take a look at the RC-Monster forums (http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/) for lots of extra info, and D8 conversions.
Realistically, you may as well get the stuff in from the USA. Even at Flighttech, the MMM with the 2200 motor is £259.99. From RC-Monster (http://www.rc-monster.com) it is £179.99. Hyperion batteries would be the ones to go for, as they are very cheap considering how good they are. I've run them with much success, and the 5C charge ratings are true.
I've run the RC-Monster slipperential (slipper clutch and differential in one), and have basically decided that it is better than a clutch. It provides more drive-train protection than a clutch, is more easily tuneable, and you suffer less from the flex issues I mentioned when a Tekno chassis is used. It provides extra driveability on low grip tracks, protects the motor and drivetrain, you can still use ESC brakes and it is just cooler than a clutch set-up.
Hope this has helped for now. If you have anymore questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Great Guide Simon!
I too spun my V2 Tekin rotor (in the states) but just put a few drops of green thread lock down the shaft and reassembled, let cure 24 hrs and no problems since. I ran a 4hr enduro after doing that easy fix and nooo problems! I do that on all my motors now as a point of precaution.
