This is one of my favourites, from early 2003 just before the rc10B4 was available, the 3 drivers in the lead here are cragg, bradby and bailey all driving the B4 and an entire field of losi XXX cars chasing.
The XXX was almost the only car used at batley before the B4 came out, now the B4 is almost the only car used!.. come on losi!

My CAT 3000 last outdoor race of 2004.
Mere milliseconds later I tapped the brakes and landed perfectly on the downslope ( really, I did !! ) forgot who took the pic, so apologies there.
Not the greatest pic ever, well I did zoom in a lot, but brings back great memories of the "crazy Scottish guy with the 2 stick radio and the Schumacher car" out jumping even some of the 8th scale guys !

This photo was taken by Beau Long at the RC Pro Series Eastern Division, Round 3 at the Farm 2 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

I qualified for the 30 minute A-main. I knew I had no chance to beat the few fast/pro/factory guys, so I told them all that no matter what I would take the hole shot. There were 15 Unlimited MT's in a starting gate that opened to a 200 ft straight away.

I TOOK the Holeshot, got a trophy and $25 ....LOL :)
I came in 7th place after my body came off and I had to make an extra pit to fix it. I didn't want to be DQ'd. Otherwise, I had 5th place in the bag.

Bikes are so much more 'dynamic' than cars, I prefer watching them, riding them, working on them, far FAR more fun.

jimmy

I wont post them up since I don't want to steal someone elses thunder (publishers) but I really liked some Truggy photos I got recently. Those things, and indeed any such large mad things are ace to take photos of, they are SO dynamic, balooning tyres, soft suspension, loose surfaces, mega power, smoke etc etc, all makes for great action.
Hence my desire to get some photos of other big wheelers like the 5b

Jimmy you have got the kit, for motorcross you don't need a long lens, as you can get really close to the action so the 70-200 would be ideal. I am sure there are Motorcross meetings in your area when you have a free sunday give it a go ;)

Steve, as you say i think as you can see the rider it just looks better than a driver inside a car etc.

Heres another one of my fav Pictures.

It's a recent one taking from the BTCC at Cotswolds. Very rare for me to get a pic like this with the lense being Auto-Focus only and i havent got used to it to be able to catch many photos many like this.

Is there a setting that will let me take the photo straight away without it focusing and taking forever?

Nice one, nice and low, just what I like to see.

What do you mean autofocus only ? there is no focus ring ? I wouldn't use a focus ring anyway. The best way is to focus using autofocus and then lock that focus using a button - I think this can be setup on the D50 but I have not used one so cant tell you how.

Will Olpin
06-08-2006, 05:37 PM
Nope there is no focus ring. When we bought the the lense it had no aperture ring thats why it was cheaper than some hense why you would need it on Auto-Focus.

I'll give that a try Jimm, Thanks.

He is back from Belguim told him about the size of the pics on his site. They are that size because he downloads over two thousand pics of each meet and his 2gb memory on the site is always full. Also he has had problems with people printing pics and not paying for them (which you must relate with jimmy). But when he comes to take pics of the cars he will put them up bigger.

The problem with my own site is I upload around 105 - 135Mb of data after each days racing, hence the small pics. Even a marginal increase in size would mean a VERY large increase in upload amount. (Takes around 4.5 to 6 hours to upload)
I currently keep around 10 months worth on site, on a roll on, roll off basis. If I reduced this to six months, I could possibly increase the picture sizes, but I don't look forward to 10 hour upload sessions  .
As far as submitting to forums, I submit larger pics (Ain't my server, after all ;) )

Hmmm. I use Photobucket, seems to be good.

Register on a photosharing site and then upload one of your pics.

Then it should give you some links. URL IMG and there are more, the link you want is IMG.

So copy the link with [IMG/] and then paste it into your reply.

Hope this helps.

Could any one help me with the D50. i have no focus ring and Jimmy was on about a "lock Focus" feature which means it wont take about 5 seconds to foucs and will stay on that foucs?

Thanks,

OldTimer
08-08-2006, 09:08 PM
Will, you should have a switch at the front of the camera to switch to MF (manual focus) you focus on the object or piece of track which is on the racing line, then switch to manual focus. As the car comes towards the point you focused it will get more and more in foucs, until it get to the point were you set the focus. This is called pre-focusing, and is what everyone did before the joys of auto focus.

OldTimer
08-08-2006, 09:12 PM
Just looked at a photo of the D50, where you attach the lens there is a small switch nearby at the front of the camera marked AF or M this is the switch for manual or auto focus :)

One fly in the ointment though. Up until three months ago, you could turn up at a track, have a word with the officials, and often as not be allowed trackside. That all changed after a spate of stupid accidents caused by a few people taking silly risks. :pale:
Now, if you want to get track side, you need indemnity insurance (£1M+), personal insurance, proof of intention (What you'll be doing with the pictures), proven track record (known to local officals to be sensible around the track), and last of all, you need to be registered with the governing body and approved.

There is a bright side though

There are a number of tracks you can actually get close enough to, not to need track access, and still get good results.
Best lens has already been mentioned ( 70-200 f2.8 ) but an excellent alternative is the likes of the Sigma or Tamron 28-300 although you need better light)

Mail me if you want to have a dabble :D

:o:o:o ! BLIMEY
I have a feeling a BRCA licence wont cover me.:p

I didn't know it would be so, erm, profesional. Were there people running around on the track or something ? What would they think of someone using the photos for their own site / pleasure ?
I guess maybe I need to look at taking photos at some track where I don't need all that stuff ? I wonder if I might get frustrated though with being stuck behind a barrier (or whatever ) or not being close enough to fill the frame.

OldTimer
09-08-2006, 09:39 AM
Jimmy, i would not worry to much about not getting on the trackside of the fence, as you are a lot closer to the action with motorcross than normal circuit racing were you are next to the armco barriers.

The photos in these albums were all taken in public areas but of course it could be a little different at your local circuits, on the corners you were ok with the 70-200 but for head on shoots the 300mm was better :) http://www.gforceimages.net/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=42

Seeing all that dirt flying up makes mi mouth water. I see what you mean jonathan, that does look ideal. I have a 1.4xTC for the 70-200, That should bring me a little closer I guess? I dont have anything longer than that though.

OldTimer
09-08-2006, 09:50 AM
Yes the x1.4 convertor would be ideal and hopefully not slow down the AF to much. Some of the head on shots at donnington were done with the 300mm plus a x2 plus a 3 stop ND filter so there is a very shallow depth of field, handy it was a mega sunny day.

Jimmy, 70-200 is generally fine, and the 1.4x will be great.
Email me, as I'm at Charnock this weekend, which is pretty good from the spectator's patch.
However, I'm at Hawkstone in 4 weeks covering the British Championships for the ACU, and that has superb access for the spectators, you'd do well with that one, although you'd have to pay entry fee same as anyone else.
If you want to tag along to either venues, let me know. (Drive up to me and I'll take you to both, but be warned, it can be a fairly long day!)

I've Been getting earache from Spenny to point the camera at his RC (when I get a free minute)

I've got a mate called Pete Dalton who runs NW MotoX seniors class, I've been thinking about tagging along to a meeting to get some pics for a bit but not got round to it, too much else to do.

I've taken quite a few rally pics over the last few years but not much recently. There was talk earlier in the thread about bikes being more dynamic than cars, which is reasonable when referring to circuit cars. Rally cars don't make a bad subject though. I've got a mate who is building a GP4 MKII Escort at the moment, that will generate some good shots at some point.

Thanks!

I dont really take many at the racing anymore as there is only so many times you can shoot cars racing around a flat track indoors before it all starts to look the same :(.

I want to see about getting to some proper off-road stuff sometime to get some shots of it as they dont really do much of that around here anymore. Also the low light can be annoying when you need iso1600 to get 1/200th

Agreed - I am the same. I like new stuff and get bored quickly. I did get the camera out at the weekend but unlike a year or two ago I didn't really have the will to push myself to get a nice photo. It is hard work when you are trying to race also, and if you already have that photo, then where is the challenge.

So at the same time, whilst I do take photos at most meetings, I find I am sometimes not totally in the mood for it and producing run of the mill photos which I hate.

still, the photos are good, must of taken a few photos to get some of those low shutter speed ones. Indoors isn't usually too fun but these photos are great.

I find I quite regularily only come home with 10-15 shots on the card as Im shooting something different. Also my car has been giving me lots of bother recently so I've been mechanicing on it instead of taking pictures.

Getting to some outside tracks would make me more interested I guess as even the "generic" shots would be new to me.

The attached shot was taken at 18mm(1.6x crop) so I was very very close to the cars.

I am like that with the drag racing photography I do. Once all the cars come around once or twice, you've got the burnout shot and the launch, there's nothing more to do. It's even worse if there's Jap cars or hot hatches there, as they are dull and generally don't move very quickly, whilst the yank tanks squirm all over, lift wheels and do huge burnouts.

I just can't get into r/c photography! I'd rather be racing.

After the Autosport show yesterday I preferred taking pics of rough promo girls instead. I think i've found my calling in life - taking pictures of dirty women.

It may just be the light but the Yellow doesn't look quite dark enough there.... i guess it's closer to the Lambo Yellow that's pearlescent? Look cool though, but you KNOW they need Black wheels to finish the job nicely

My Uncle used to ride for Yamaha in the 80's - but that's when they were red and white, with the black bits thrown in - similar to this colour scheme wise:

http://www.patmanracing.com/YZM2bla.jpg

Then of course there was this waaay back in the early 80's ;-)

Heya Tell.

Well i think i had the camera on Auto so that may have been the reason why they look like that. Mind i do quite like them but it may look to some people as i just stuck the car on the track and took a pic lol.

Reginoals sounds good. Havent had any info about it, could you maybe PM me a link buddy?

Oh and i think the two people who were driving those cars, top national drivers were just testing out the shells i think so couldn't be botherd to put lights and grills on. And it wasnt proper racing. I don't think that it is is BRCA legal to have no grills and lights.
