hey guys,

haven't seen a thread like this (if there is one please just delete this one of the mods haha) but i was hoping you guys would post some picks of your buggies as i'm trying to get an idea for a good layout and some new body paint idea... figured this would be a good way to figure it out is too look at what you guys have already done. Cheers

This was my first conversion, an 8ight buggy with a Feigao 9L(replaced later by a Neu 1515) and a Mamba Max, 3S lipos:

Next, my Xray 808 v2009, with a MMM 2200Kv, still on 3S:

As you can see i didn't improve my painting skills...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3325/3498844674_d60753ec37_b.jpg

I put the rear shocks on its original position eventually:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2471/3754994305_b48ff9ca35_b.jpg

And the las thing i did was taking the ESC to the front:

Now, a little preview of the next step:

Rear shocks are going back to the front, and a carbon chasis is on the works. Is one of the lightets buggy's and it's going to be even lighter :thumbsup:

Well, i always need to do something to my car, so one day i was bored and decided to put them on the front, 1/10th style, the by then Serpent/Durango 1/8th prototype made me curious about it
Moving them means more weight to the front of the car. I've been testing this for a year and i really like it.

The rollbar thing, a lot of people ask about it. A new mounting system for the "front" of the diff bulkhead is needed. The final car will have a cool looking carbon support :D

nice cars guys.... out of curiousity why have most of you moved the esc to the front of the car? I have min set up so it's the batt packs and then the esc in the very back of the car. Any reason for your set ups or just more convenient for whatever reason?

Im finding with 8th, the setup has a bigger margin of error than other classes - so minor changes make little difference, its all about big changes. Moving the shocks is a small change to me, and id be suprised if you could really feel any benefit from it.

Good work though, im all for new things and im not diss'ing your workmanship. Im just questioning if such minor change can be felt on the track.

Chris Doughty

once you get familar with 8th scale cars Chris, changes can be felt just the same as 10th scale.

I'm still unsure of benefits of front mounted rear shocks, I always liked rear mounted shocks on my 10th scale 4WD's

I'm not a pro so i agree with you, i might not notice big differences with small changes. But in this case, i took the car with the shocks mod on a race the first time i tested it, and results were pretty good, i was going fast and confortable with the car. So at least i know it's not a bad thing, laptimes don't lie :p

Get some photos on of the rollbar mounting etc, im intrigued.

Yeh Chris, granted, im new to the class and making big changes and feeling a lot less than 10th. I suppose in time I'll grow to be familiar and feel the little changes. If we get a good summer I'll certainly give myself plenty of tracktime, got several bottle of fuel sat in the garage itching to be used!!!

Yours truely drifting through T1 at the first round of the unofficial danish nationals. 45min final, 2 pitstops, 2 year old car, Tekin 1400kv buggy motor, 6S battery. Motor temps were 90 celcius and speedo at 50 (with no fan) after 45 mins of hard driving. A little hot on the motor side, but these motors, unlike 1/10th motors, can handle the heat. Finished 8th, would have been 6th hadnt it been for the stops which cost me 3 laps. Well pleased with the result given it was my first ever 45 min final. 45 mins is not quite as easy as the 5 mins I'm used too :)

And another action shot:

Was in Denmark, not the UK - anyway - noone wants to stand up all 45 minutes. Drivers hardly made any mistakes plus it made it easier to see the track, not having marshalls blocking certain parts of it. It was indoor since the entire country was covered in 50cm of snow at the time, and the track wasnt THAT big if you compare it to the typical outdoor track. If we had the marshalls stand up, it'd block the vision for several drivers in several corners around the track.

Thinking of converting my nitro 1/8 buggy to brushless, do you guys simply bolt the motor where the nitro motor was direct onto the spur gear i.e. no clutch?

AmiSMB
19-03-2010, 10:53 AM
The rear part of the centre diff mounting is usually replace with a CNC aluminium part which holds the motor and the pinion it the directly agains the spur gear for direct drive.
The CNC part usually places the motor on the opposite side of where the nitro engine goes. Then with the engine and fuel tank gone the speed controller and battery are then put in their place.
There are some newer layouts where is you are running individual 2s lipo packs you run one pack either side to keep the centre of gravity lower and balance the car more.
I currently use the Tekno RC conversion on my Losi 8B and this has the option of using a clutch or direct drive and mechanical brakes. One benefit of the mechanical brakes on the Tekno RC conversion is that it removes the braking from the electric motor and reduces the temperature and you can still alter the front to rear braking bias.
Some aluminium conversion plates state you can use mechanical brakes but from what I have seen is that they only allow one disc to be used and it is usually the front one. Obviously the down side of mechanical brakes is that you need to run an extra servo and need a transmitter capable of channel mixing for it to work although you could probably get an electronic mixer from a model shop that does aircarft to do the same job.

I cant tell what he has but look at Elite RCD mount they are the best made out there. Easy to remove motors, adjust or change pinions and internal bearing on mount makes your BL motor bearings last much longer as it acts as a dust barrier and shares stress and vibrations that can over time blow the front bearings of BL motors.

Finals run for 20 minutes are the setups you run 2000 motor and 5000 lipos quick enough and will last a 20 minute final?

Brooks
22-04-2011, 08:26 AM
Yes mate. We run 20 mins finals. I am using a 2100kv Losi motor which is standard in the kit and the orion 6900mah 4s lipo which can get me pass 20 mins no problem. I did try my Intellect 5400mah 4s lipo and that lasted me 20 mins just, it had 1% in the battery, bit too close for comfort. That is driving it very smooth and not throttle jaming at all.

Hope that helps mate

I don't know tho -

I've just switched from 1/10th buggies and sct's to an 1/8th truggy and e-revo - whilst both were a fair few pounds 2nd hand (on another forum)...both came fully rtr and had so many spares and bits and bobs, am able to sell them on to make the cash back

Very nice Dave, many thats come chunky wire!

What kind of run times are you getting?? Is that a 1800kv Tekin??

DaveTheRave
21-02-2012, 06:48 AM
I've only given it one proper run and it was just over 7.1v on each 2s pack when I switched it off after 20 minutes. So I might have got another minute or two out of it before the cut off.

I used 8AWG wire just to make it look a bit meatier, I don't think you need that lower guage though as the Tekin 2050 motor came with 12AWG so I guess that is plenty chunky enough.

They are Nanda block tyres (these thing does get bashed too. :P )
Very cheap and work incredibly on grass, mud or what have you rubbish on a track though, very hard wearing too. :)

I've got a set of mini spikes on it for the track.
These are them if anyones interested?

Even if this mod did shave some weight and lowered the cg, the biggest advantage is in my eyes the new clean layout. And not to mention the shorter motor cables.
And yes, its tight between the front driveshaft and the steering link. But no touch.
The last piece of the bracket that is visible is for the transponder.

Great looking buggy....but isn't placing the esc on top of the servo counterproductive for heat dissipation? You are a running a hi voltage setup and ideally the servo should have a bit more space to breathe (assuming it also has it's own heatsink). Also, if you have used adhesive to attach the esc this may come off in the heat?

This is all theoretical of course, but just giving my thoughts!

What hi voltage setup? And no, I have never felt the servo being that warm. ANd the bracket that holds the esc is quite small so I think there will be no problem. Thx for input though...

That looks Great. I've good things about the mugen but are parts difficult to get?

Parts aren't hold to get hold of fella. Future world models, Herts RC,RC bits up north to name but a few. This time last year it was hard than normal, but not now.

Only astro at the jumps, table top and bomb hole matey, predominantly

Its a kit, well a 80% built roller, its in no way a nitro conversion, it has electric specific chassis and also a different shell to the nitro, giving room for large lipo packs

Just finished a project car which has finally come together and thought I'd share.

Proline Losi 2.0 slipstream body trimmed to MP9 and fit narrower chassis, paint scheme based it on the Nissan Leaf Nismo RC.

The weight distribution is bang on and I will sing the praises of Tekno and of course Kyosho as nothing short of awesome. Balance left to right was to the gram bang on, rear is biased by 80 grams.

Few posts seem to exist with MP9e's, let alone Tekno conversions so thought anyone looking to build one might find this of interest:
Weight,
3709g with 2x 6600mah 2S
3509g using 2 x 4000mah shorties (heats)

Initial set up as follows:
Diffs 5/7/3
Shocks - Losi shock oils
35 front with grey springs 1.3x8 pistons
30 Rear with std blue springs 1.3x8 pistons

I have opted to run with Tekno's traktion drive and the mechanical brake option. My ESC, TEKIN Rx8, 1900kv T8 motor mated to 18T clutch bell and 0.9mm springs with alu shoes.

Anyone else running Tekno chassis, mech brake set ups and or traktion drive on 1/8th EP buggy? I need to commission the brake aspect so will update once I've got her dirty this coming weekend.

Images attached this time, doh!

Nice ride mate:)

Only thing I would say is, I use the 6000mah Nano-Techs stood up like yours and the centrifugal force from going round high-speed corners causes the 4mm power leads to come out of the battery connectors, so it's a good idea to gaffa tape these in place before your final starts. Other than that I think you'll be leaving the 2-stroke boys in a cloud of LiPo fumes:woot:

Currently i'm running a 150A XERUN/2700kv EZRUN combo which gives me 18mins runtime with my 6000mah Nano-Techs. I really want to do 20min finals against nitros so can you let me know what runtime you get with your 6600/1900kv setup?

Thanks!

Raphalite
05-03-2013, 11:59 PM
Cheers Hotshot III

Thanks for the tip fella, gaffa tape is also now packed in amongst my ever expanding hauler.

TBH from what I have read and the advice I have taken from some mates who all run 1/8th EP buggies, with a mindful corner exit trigger and sensible ESC set up I am hoping the 20mins is achievable. I'll let you know fella, how it goes in a couple of weeks when I have a meeting lined up.

I chose to gear up to achieve circa 45mph in the knowledge 1900kv run on 4S is less power hungry than a 2200kv on say a 16T to achieve similar top speed. All will be revealed when I hit the track if my gearing suits me and the track layout.

If you've not seen or used the RC calculator at the link below it might be useful or of interest, certainly helped me get my head round which range of pinions could be useful with which motor.

Looks good. Although no rear chassis brace?

Raphalite
06-03-2013, 12:06 PM
Nice one Chris-S, its been fun building it!

According to the sales patter it doesn't need one, I must confess it looks odd without. The deck is 4mm instead of 3mm, a little stiffer, so I am told. Owners who have fabricated a rear brace out of a mixture of ball ends and an upper tie rod seem to all agree that it handles better without, and then go and remove it.

Personally I looked into this and fabricated my own rear brace, but bolting it to the centre diff top plate in place of the fuel filter holder is just asking for gear meshing issues under compression. Theres little / no room on the deck down the centre line. It might be possible to fit one off centre alongside the rear servo? I'll check this out after a few runs if needed once I get a handle on how it handles.

Yeah, I realise it's a buggy mutation.

Finally, after far too much expense........

Hot Bodies / Tekno RC D8Te.

Full Tekno RC brushless conversion with heaps of other upgrades. Lunsford titanium, King Headz, Upgrade Vortex wing etc.....Thanks to JayJ (decent fella from MSUK) for allowing me to buy this beautiful chassis, it's a class piece of kit.
Tekno RC Traktion Drive with mechanical brakes. Not sure how it'll perform. No doubt it'll prove to be an asset on the track rather than just playing.
Viper RC VTX8 ESC. Lovely kit, really is. I'm whacking one in my Hara too, can't resist. I reckon this thing will provide some real competition for Tekin regarding top-end racing controllers. Build quality is excellent and the adjustments available far exceed any bashing needs by a considerable margin. Nifty program box came with it too.
Tekin 1550kv truggy motor, rated for 6s use.
Savox 1256TG steering and 1258TG braking servos.

All set up for 6s LiPo, hopefully it'll perform as good as it looks.

Beautifully understated and ridiculously sparkly shell sprayed by Jon Miller of RCS.
Sanwa M12 radio makes it go and steer.
Pictures provided by my friend, Ian Fakenbridge (Eyeayen). Cheers mate, appreciate the time and help.
