I must be having a young persons mid life crises and want a vintage car I had when I was younger.
I want to get a car I can race that will still go fairly well against the modern cars.
4wd would be the way to go and I was thinking of building a modern classic, modern shocks, brushless etc
As it's a race car I need to be able to get spares
I was thinking;
Tamiya Manta ray, TRF shocks etc!
Pro Cat
Pred carbon chassis one
Tamiya Fire Dragon
Boss Cat
Lazer Zxr
xx4, but this a bit new!
YZ10? But I never owned one as a kid but loved the look of them!
I don't want ti be spending big bucks on a car to race, so maybe this puts out a few on the list! If you have any other suggestions that would be great .......

Well have a look on the Lazer thread here and the lazer thread on the radiocontrolzone.com. We have managed to find bodyshells such as the Lazer ZX-S (which I supplied) as well as the Parma Tom cat which in my opinion was one of the nicest shells ever for this car (I also supplied and awaiting the first two shells when the mold has been made) and Kamtec are currently making in small numbers to those who want it.
My friend called Matt (listed on here as Dyno) makes plastic molds of Kyosho so can make you a front gearbox casings and rear gearbox casings as well as layshaft gears and soon after I have tested diff gears and pivot braces. I have tested the rest and quality is as good as the original (if not better). Also sometime soon maybe wishbones. This car is a tank and is hard to break if its built properly.
Fibre-Lyte also have all the chassis designs, top deck designs and shock tower designs (including servo plate, steering plate and L brace and motor plate) so all items are available.
Also a German company sells the belts (made by them and not kyosho) so thats a great help to.
UJs are an item that can be foound and soon I will go through the Lazer ZX-5 UJ list and see which ones are the correct ones for the ZXR. Still hope this helps you decide.

Hi Mark.
When it comes to vintage racer what year is the cut-off? Here in Australia we shut the date at anything up to december 1990 while in the states i think they go out to around 94.
Ive had much success with the Procat. I run a Bosscat slipper and a few other mods but more or less the car is within the ruling. The Bosscat is a later model and doesnt fit the cut off.
I also run an AYK Boost, YOKOMO Dogfighter and have run the Lazer ZXR mk2 but I think the first Lazer is the only one to make it before cut off.
For me the Lazer has a very free drivetrain, fairly good ball diffs and a strong chassis and suspension design. The Procat has the crash back front end and a well balanced chassis if you're racing on the loose stuff. Parts are still around for both cars wether it be ebay or otherwise and both will serve you well.
I wish you the best. Cheers-Jason.

Hi!
I dont think you make Tamiya any justice when you bring up cars such as the fire dragon and mantaray. They have the top force line and i would go for a top force evolution myself or buy a regular top force and buy some hop ups for it. The top force was rerelased in 2005 so plenty of parts is circulating on Tamiyaclub and ebay.

Well i wouldnt as the plastics are too brittle. Tamiya vintage broke more than youd want. The newer trf501 would be worth buying as its how they should make cars - to last.
Bosscat, procat (i have owned all) but the lazer in my opinion is a better all rounder. Easy to use as well.
