A simple question? Witch one of these three cars got the most rear grip and stearing. I have owned all 3 of them but cant remember and compare because I was such a novis back then.
Kyosho Ultima RB5 SP (only SP, not worlds or the first one)
Ae B4Ft
Losi xxx-cr
Thinking of building me a midmotor and I am not too impressed with the ones that exists. Dont like the idea of putting a ton of brass to make it run well. Just does not feel right. I think it can be done without all the dead weight.

you cant have both good rear grip and steering at the same time. You need to sacrifice your steering for some grip or vice versa.
from the list of current top 2wd, the order for rear end grip goes
losi xxx-cr
kyosho rb5
AE B4
nothing has more rear end grip than the losi! Most times you need to set the CR up so that you want to get rid of rear grip so the car will turn :o

In any case its a pointless question as the whole issue of rear grip vs steering is centered around the weight distribution and you will be altering that by going mid motor. Yes I know other things also effect grip and steering, but it either way your mid motor is going to be very different.

Again having driven them all I'd say that the order is
RB5
XXX-CR
B4
XXX-CR and RB5 are both similar but if your talking about maximum grip potential purely via the rear end geometry then the RB5 has it just.
As said before the change of weight distribution will have a large effect on the grip balance.

the RB5 also generates a shed load more front end than the losi!

I will disagree with you here. You have driven them all, but driving and owning are two different things. I have owned all 3 all at the same time, and continuously rotating between cars.
CR has the most rear grip
RB5 also has very good rear grip, but not as much, but also has good steering.
B4 has too much steering, and not enough rear grip.
All these assessments are based on kit setup.
All 3 cars are designed for dirt/clay racing.
so it will depend on what track you run as to the rear grip level you get.
As seen at Proline dirt arena.
The cars you mention are all well balanced on dirt, not a lot between them.
the best mid motor car I have seen and works on dirt is the carbon atomic.
this is a well balanced car, and has no weight on it.

Yes, the answers you guys have provided are in line with my own experiences. Own a Kyosho for the moment and before that I had a X-6. sold that very quickly after putting it together and tested it for a while. Did not like the quality at all and when you are being suggested in the manual to file and grind the parts to make them fit, well then I am not impressed.
Also had an Atomic Carbon S2 and really liked that car. If I could turn back time...
A friend of mine has build a Ultima mid and that one runs really well. So well so I am Thinking of building one myself. The reason I asked in the first place is the issue with the tranny. 3 or 4 gears. That is why. My friends got a 3 gear and still has a lot of rear grip but in my car I am going to design my own tranny and I am not sure which way to go yet. tried to get one from Fabs on this forum but he has not answed my two mail so I will do it on my own except mine will be made out of CNC machined alloy and 3 parts. One bottom and two top halves. 4 screws to get to the diff.
Then a CF chassis with build in weight on the right places.
Not going to be cheep but I can do it so just for the fun of it, I will:)

if your going to build your own mid mount, then do it properly with a 4 gear tranny.
4 gear tranny's are so much better for traction.
