Yup............that does it for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I belive that the rallycross leg-end Pat Doran's son is still using one in rallycross at the moment. Still an amazing car after all these years. I wonder if i take a hammer to my mondeo if i can beat it in to a similar shape.

To fully repeat the experience, take the silencers off the exhausts then shove the engine on the back seats. Remove the correct sized radiator and get a much smaller one from a Ka, then stick it to the roof just behind your head. Next remove all interior trim and stick 800 random (and completely unlabelled) knobs, dials and switches.
Then take the seats out, get one of those hard backed plastic chairs and bolt it directly to the floor.
Finally drive the whole thing off a cliff at insane speed and die
And there you have the Group B experience!

I'm one of the start line marshals for the Lydden Hill rallycross meetings (I've done Brands Hatch too) - back in the Group B era when I was stood next to an 8 car grid of these monsters pushing out between 800 to 1000 bhp each - it leaves a lasting impression on you to say the least.

The modern rallycross cars just dont have the same appeal to me I'm afraid. The 6R4 just has a noise to die for, the RS200 is sleek and sexy, the 205T16E2 mentally quick, but the most brutal of them all were the Audi S1 pictured above and the Lancia Delta S4.

There was a Lancia raced by a chap call Jarmo Lahteenmaki - was both supercharged and turbocharged - totally and utterly mental.

God i could go on and on reminiscing lol.........

Its not the initial 75k outlay that scares me as its a fantastic car and an iconic one at that, but the full and i mean full rebuild after every event that put me off getting one, i can get 1500 miles out of my engine before it needs a rebuild and about the same for the box and diffs but could you imagine paying 5-10k every month or every event even if you didnt break it?

Still an awesome awesome car

And the lad who commented about the vw's, your wrong :woot:

Thats an amazing car but you are paying for the lineage and milage.

I remember when they was banned in rallying my local garage had one for about £35k in full rally colours it was there for a long time. Then a while later an RS200 now that was a proper car not just a mini with a huge V8 engine mounted in the boot.

Before they pulled the plug on the Group B rally cars Lancia Made the Lancia S4 R not super exact about the name.
The Lancia R
Had carbon rims and drive shafts, drivetrain ,chassi, body and carbon breaks. Rims where made in carbon with an alu center.
If my memory is correct the car had 80% made of carbon.
it was super light 800 kgs or so and had like 780 hp twin turbo charged.
Dont remember who test drove it but he said that it would be possible to win the F1 championship if had arrived earlier.

Dont know if it still exists but it stood in an corner at abarth/lancia factory.

Not twin turbo, supercharged and turbocharged. Supercharger for lower revs, turbo once it had spooled up.
Rumor has it Lancia themselves were concerned about the cars safety as on tight forest stages alternating between light and shade it could cover ground faster than the drivers eyes could focus on the next corner!

not just a mini with a huge V8 engine mounted in the boot.

Ahem - V6 - hence the "6"R4. Did come in various guises though - 2.8, 3.0, 3.6 and 3.8 litres. Then there were the likes of Will Gollop's 2.3 BiTurbo. Arne Rasmushaugen had a BiTurbo as well.

If you want fully Group B spectactular photos and info, go looking at some of the Rallycross websites. There's a plethora of stuff to wander through.

Think the 2 most insane Rallycross cars (not Group B) I've seen were Arild Martinsen's 4WD BMW M3 at Brands - which punched out 1000BHP and left black streaks from the start line to the first corner, and a Chevy Monza with a 3 speed semi auto drag race gearbox converted for a chap who'd been paralyzed in a rally crash. Epic machinery

It was the Lancia S4 that they ran a few laps round Estoril F1 Circuit, compared to the F1 laps they said it would have qualified 6th on the Grid, that is SCARY Fast! Straight line speed wouldn't have been as good but the mid corner and exit speed due to 4wd and crazy amounts of Torque would have literally pulled it round so fast.

Its even more scary than that because in those days F1 cars were also turbocharged and developed close to 1500bhp in qualifing trim!

Not twin turbo, supercharged and turbocharged. Supercharger for lower revs, turbo once it had spooled up.
Rumor has it Lancia themselves were concerned about the cars safety as on tight forest stages alternating between light and shade it could cover ground faster than the drivers eyes could focus on the next corner!

here is an link of the ecv where they explaine the TWIN turbo charged engine ...and the name was ecv

Will gollops 6r4 was featured in Autocar , they did a full bore start and it hit 60 in 2.1 seconds , they said it was more akin to launching your self off a cliff.

I used to love rally x , was it Martin something or other that had a nutty rs200 ??

Martin Schanche - Mr Rallycross - a real character.

Group B rallycross cars were only geared to about 120mph, but it was the speed they reached it which was scary. As you say 0 - 60 was about 2 to 2.4 seconds - faster than an F1 car. Epic when you stand next to 8 of them when they launch as well

Wasn't he the guy that got took out on the first corner of a race, then stood in the middle of the track to shake his fist at who did it? think he was banned for a year or something for it.

Indeed he was. Stood in the middle of the track with his hands on his hips defiantly waiting for the cars to come round on lap 2.

I'm priviliged to have witnessed the best of the Group B era in rallycross. There's plenty of footage on Youtube - all very nostalgic for me lol

Ah yes the Rallycross Grands Prix at Brands Hatch :woot: Martin Schanche, Will Gollop, John Welch (that x-trac Astra :o ) and so on.....

BBBRRRRRAAAAARRRPPP up through the pitlane, bang turn right down tumbledown hill, druids, across the knife- edge, hoppys drop.....

I'd forgotten just how awesome that was.

Will Gollop in that Metro though....he had to hope for rain in the end everytime as the tyres wouldn't stay on the rims.

Welch's Astra was an awesome machine. 800Bhp on tap from an ex Group B Opel Manta 400 if I recall correctly. And was just pure sex in the STP / Sphere Drake colours.

Brands was an epic track, but I've grown up with Lydden from a very early age, so to me it will always be "home" for rallycross.

Not been to Lydden Hill somehow! Sitting on top of paddock opposite tumbledown - I can't think of another view of a decent (IE not an oval) racetrack anywhere in the world that can better that one. (Admittedly I haven't been to every racetrack - in the World!)

Group B Rallycross >>>>>>> every other form of motorsport.

Edit

Just recalled an interview with Schanche once and he said something like "When I hit the brake pedal twice for a corner thats when I'll retire"
