Jon, how do you make that carbon effect?

Myself I use a "anti skid mat" (rubber) as a mask, but it's hard to do for curved/bulky shapes. How do you get it so perfect "all over"?

Your work is not RC shell painting btw, this is true artwork!

!!!quality, thanks for all the great comments guys!!!

peter - looks sweet mounted mate. hope youre pleased with it.

shy - i use anti slip toolbox liner also. just do bits of the shell at a time and try n get them lined up as best as poss. :)

telboy
01-04-2008, 03:11 PM
Yep, same here, I have some 'pre cut' shapes to fit buggies and tourers etc. and I just do 1 pannel at a time.
You can't always get it into the creases properly so just concentrate on the flat and curved panels.

Yeah ask how you want it to be like or whatever, then send it and it'll come back a few weeks later depending on how much buisness there is to do then it comes back as a work of art :)

Few shells there making my eyes go funny, the one with the yellow checks surrounded by black i thought was a photoshop of a design at first, very surreal look to it somehow! The water droplet effect is quite strange too, I assume it is painted on since it doesn't *quite* look real enough? Took me a while tho ! The trophy plaque is a great idea too, looks good. Top jobs as usual

np dude, give me a shout whenever yer ready.

For sure! I wonder with all these shells, do you design them for people, or do you get the main design from them, and then you refine it, or are these designs pretty much exactly how someone has designed it before coming to you?

Cheers!

mk - nice1 dude  thanks for the comments.

clark - yeh, majority of the time its me designing them. sometimes people ask for certain colors and let me do the design or they might want a certain design element in there like lightning or flames etc but arent fussed on the colors etc. n yeh, like u said, sometimes people will have a pic of a design or something in mind n let me do my own take on it.

was supposed to be a water drop effect, but on the black it came out looking more like some type of stone..still cool all the same though.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/jonmills/Picture004-28.jpg

as you mightve seen from past pics ive done several blue flame type paint jobs but have never really had a go at real colors. only a few times like. didnt turn out very good but thought id post pics anyway. 'tis all experience.
if anyone wants to buy it, pm me with offers. dont want much for it as it didnt turn out overly clever.

Jon, that's unbelievable... it's almost TOO good!

Could you take some step-by-step shots of how you make those "ghosty" blue flames?

telboy
06-06-2008, 08:40 AM
The real flame stuff (in orange) is really hard to perfect.
I think its something you need lots o time to get right ad lots of practice.

http://www.telsshells.com/DSCN0741w.jpg

This was my one and only attempt at it.
It is easier to do the blue flames because you're just using a couple of colours, but the real flames it takes a lot of layering in the right order.

Good work though Jon.

SHY
06-06-2008, 09:59 AM
Yeah, that was my guess. Most of all I'm wondering if you use a combination of template/masking and freehand? Since it's a combo of sharp and fussy edges.

Or "sharp" layer with mask first. Then blur it some places?

A simple how-to would be great! I'd never come close to you guys but it's fun to try and improve...

MK999
06-06-2008, 11:53 AM
It was a technique pioneered by a painter in the US going by phat bodies (as far as I am aware :)), I'm sure there was a tutorial that he did somewhere on it, but a quick search on the net reveals nothing. He used a piece of card held a cm or so away from the body, so that you get a sharp edge then the lower pressure under the card allows some misted paint to 'bleed' underneath it. That's how you create the shape, but as Tel said the layering of various paint colours is truly a work of art.

graham - cheerz bro.

andy - glad you like it mate. feel free to post up some mounted pics.

shy - nice1 buddy. the blue uses less layers n colors n is more about the flow.. r/y/o flames is more involved. same priciples though. ive only had a few goes at that. need to knuckle down n crack it really.

Hi Jon

Yes I am! Looking forward to it. The organisers are waiting for the Mayor to give the all clear but it should be the back end of November/ beginning of December again.

Looking to prop the bottom of the table in both 2WD and 4WD this year. Being at the bottom doesn't hurt so much when your car looks that good:lol:

I think there should be a couple of us going again and would like you to do a pit board for me too in the same design later in the year. Please PM/ email the price for them.

Thank you!

flourescent green flame shells

jonmiller
01-02-2009, 11:39 PM
the shell does still pop in real life, but the flash makes it look stupidly toxic.
i used ss yellow and green and white for the flame work. any good candy/transparent colors will work though.

Thanks :D i'll have to try that on one of my next ones (i've got another 3 shells to practice on!) the first one wasnt that adventurous really, there was no fade effects on it, apart from yellow and silver at the front which i did with a spray can because the shop didnt have any yellow in jars. I'm definately going to invest in some liquid mask as the paint bled in a few places. I'm just looking around for ideas at the moment.

What paint did you use for that shell? I guess i could do a similar thing with silver instead of chrome? I like playing around with metal flakes so might put a layer of them on first ;)

spaz stix for the colored chrome. indeed, play around with different backings to achieve different effects.

pics are abit grainy. light was abit dull. :( nevermind :)

ok... a lot of the pro painters seem to use vinyl cutters.. but sounds very expensive. i dnt think i have the skill to cut something like that by hand though, its way to intricate!? can you/do you sell the cut shapes for the flowers? pm me if you do
