Which airbrush do you have Jon? i i have a badger but it is not dual action so fine work is so difficult...

i use an iwata cr neil

telboy
22-06-2007, 08:55 PM
I used a badger 200 and had no problem doing fine lines down to about .5mm .

I've just converted bac to my Aztec cheapo £20 jobbo.:o

I have a problem with the badger at the moment. It is drawing air in through the nozzle somewhere and its backing up through the brush and blowing bubbles into the paint cup. talk about a pain in th arse!
As your painting the paint is bubbling up over the cup and onto your hand and sometimes the shell.

So I'm converting back until I can afford a new Iwata.

DCM
22-06-2007, 09:01 PM
not got a bent tip to your needle, or a partialy blocked nozzle?

telboy
22-06-2007, 09:46 PM
I have got a small kink in the needle but its on the very end (probably about .5mm from the end of it). but its fine when there is more paint in the nozzle.
Its when I clean it out that it happens. Its as if the dried paint in the nozzle is blocking the air from coming back. As soon as its clean then it draws the air back.?!:o
Its a strange one.

The kink in the needle doesn't affect the brush really apart from sometime spraying in funny directions. But I've tried another needle and it still draws air in.:wtf:

Mine is a Badger 200 also. I think my problems are my compressor, its very old and I have no idea if it is suitable. Tel, do you thin your Fascolour at all or use it direct? I have always used it direct (using the bottle adapters so i dont need to decant it into other bottles). I find that when i spray, the amount of paint coming out gradually gets less and less so i have to open the nozzle, spray the wall for a bit, then close it up again until its back at the setting i started with... any ideas?

I generally don't thin it. But I have the same problem with it. Usually when I open the nozzle and spray on the wall, it just ends up the same by the time I get the shell to paint onto, and the paint won't come out, which has ended up in a few shells flying across the room in temper.
If i do thin any I use the clear windolene.

My main 'problem colour' is fasred. this seems to clogg in the airbrush really bad. white sometime gives me jipp but not as bad.

I'm wondering wether it is my airbrush.

.....by the way, can I have my own section on here jimmy? :-)

jonmiller
27-06-2007, 09:37 AM
i dont find the need much to thin faskolor when doing larger spaces. i spray it at about 75 psi. i do thin it when doing details though. i mix a 50/50 mix of water and windolene. i think the water helps the actual thinning process and the windolene acts to help with tip dry.

as far as having ur own thread tel, im sure itd be cool. im sure we'd all like to see some of your stuff. also, sorry if it offended anyone that i started my own thread without asking first.

can you paint fire?
(200th post)
http://i6.ebayimg.com/01/i/000/b7/8f/c894_3.JPG
doesn't seem too hard.

DCM
25-09-2007, 09:31 PM
got to have the right paint for starters, and a decent freehand template.

jonmiller
25-09-2007, 10:07 PM
lazerboy - ive only ever painted fire on rc about 4 times as ive hardly ever practiced it. taking that into consideration i think ive done a pretty good job.
that pic u showed was by adrc i think. him n zielke are some of the beasts at paintin this. but mind you, thats just about what they paint all the time, so they should be :D
heres the 4 ive done

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/jonmills/IMG_0079b.jpg

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/jonmills/Image001.jpg

i think im more than capable of it n so i do want to start trying it more as i would like to improve.
seeing as ive only just been painting a year now, ive been trying as many different styles/things i can and so havent had the time to knuckle down and crack on with one particular style.
all in time :D

dcm - just make ur own template outta some spare lexan. like the wheel wells etc.
and it can be done with water based paints. u dont have to have candies like spaz stix etc.

check this out :D:D

peace out

Blue flames on the black looks really good.

i use both liquid and vinyl, it just depends on the shell/design.
i put liquid mask on in roughly 4 medium coats. i just pour a blob in the shell n spread it around with a small bit of sponge.

hi john

im afraid i have to pop to the local signmakers shop i do wish you the best of luck with your work.

i personally have stopped taking work at the mo i seem to be wearing out airbrushes like they are going out of fashion one of the major down sides of water base paints, and also we just cant charge for our time which is frustrating , people also seem to want the shells back the following day even if you have 2 weeks work sat on the bench.

enough of my winging i love the work i hope you enjoy what you produce

regards Andy bell :)

telboy
15-11-2007, 11:41 PM
Andy, what airbrushes are you getting through?
Water based paints should be easier on the brushes.

I know what you mean about people wanting them for nowt and then wanting them next day. But i've gone on about this problem enough before so I'll not go on about it again.
But just tell them you've got work on and they'll have to wait. I tell people now that a 'rush job' takes a week. because I've got to fit it into my other paint jobs, and I won't just stop doing other peoples just to get one shell done.
It seems to go down ok and people are accepting that I've got loads on now.

keep it up, don't let people stop you from doing it. I know you dont get anthing out of it, but just alter the pricing a bit. if they want a good job doing then they'll pay for it. if they don't want to pay your price the tough, thats what I say. Go and get it cheaper anywhere else if you can.:p

DCM
15-11-2007, 11:51 PM
it is the cleaning of the shell, the applying of masking fluid, doing the design, and trying to make it a little different, then the easy part, the spraying..... then work out you done it for about £3 an hour..... lucky i don't do it as a business!!!

I love spraying shells but hate it when you get people knowingly going round different painters for a price, choose someone cause you like their style and go for it.

Sorry jon, but I need to know the names for the spaz stuff mate, that colour is awesome and I've got some shells in that could do with that paint on them.

Also, what pressure do you paint it on at? I've not used it before and it seem p**s thin! lol

I'm still learning after getting my new iwata airbrush. all the pressures are different to my previous brushes and I'm getting a few 'pressure blobs'!:D

Not used to the quality.:o

jonmiller
18-12-2007, 09:53 PM
cool cool. that last one was annodized yellow and orange backed with chrome.

as for pressure, i spray the ss paint at about 60....according to the guage knob on my comp, although sod knows how accurate that is. lol

what brush did you get, ive got the iwata hp cr and seems pretty good to me. although its the only brush ive had so cant compare it to owt.

let me know how you get on with the 'blobs' with the spaz stix paint, id be interested to see what resolves this.

Nope, the shell is not mine.
The set up board cost me a sweet sum but it really depends on how many colours and complexity of the design.

How many coats of the spaz clears do you apply jon?

bigred5765
15-02-2008, 11:32 PM
depending how deep you want the colours
i usually do 2-3 coats then back with chrome or metalflake etc

jonmiller
16-02-2008, 12:18 AM
id say about 3 tel. like bigred said though, more coats the deeper the color.
how did you get on with those 'pressure spots' btw. i had a few on that shell. i think laying it on too thick might have caused it. how did you resolve it? was it the pressure or how u were spraying it on?
cheerz mate.

:)

telboy
16-02-2008, 08:14 AM
It was just a case of getting the pressure right. But I also think somethings not right with the compressor. The pressure keeps dropping, and it has to be sprayed for a few seconds before it reaches a decent pressure...but then the pressure just keep rising, so something isn't right and I've got to keep guessing at which point to do subtle fades without putting to much air pressure through and spoiling the shells.

Not sure if it's because it kept in a cold out-house or not.

I think the two shells there are poles apart. The X6 is a beautiful shell to paint as it flows nicely and most design fit it perfectly, but the S4 shell is a nightmare to paint with all its lump, bumps and intakes and non flowing lines.
