Schumacher have released news of an update to their CAT SX 4WD electric buggy - the 'SX2' features many updates to improve strength and performance that the team drivers have been testing over the last few months - notably the new 'Big Bore' dampers seen in testing and already a confirmed feature of the new Cougar SV buggy make a welcome addition to the SX2 kit.
http://www.oople.com/rc/photos/misc/news/sx201.jpg
Other updated include plastic moulded hinge pin blocks instead of the easily-bent alloy items on the previous car. These should help absorb knocks without damage and are combined with new stronger suspension arms.
3 belt transmission with efficient low tension belts running on large size CNC machined pulleys.
Adjustable internal transmission ratio (2.2, 2.4, or 2.6:1) to optimise ratio for brushed or brushless motors.
Motor rotates the same direction as the wheels creating a car with superb jumping responsiveness and no torque steer effect as is common with shaft drive cars.
Super free ball diffs with silicone nitride balls, pro spec thrust bearing, and steel diff outputs.
Strong steel universal joint driveshafts.
Smooth twin pad slipper clutch with easy access adjustment running on a New tougher 5mm black spur gear.
Unique clamp motor mount to fine tune weight distribution, and allow motor changes without affecting gear mesh.
Industry standard wheel fittings.
Layshaft or front one way Speed Secret option.
Overdrive front pulley Speed Secret option.
Optimum weight distribution with stick pack lipo layout.
New 2.5mm aerospace grade carbon fibre chassis and top deck.
Horizontally split transmission housings for ease of maintenance and diff access.
Ultra narrow chassis design to minimise grounding on roll.
New Stronger front & rear wishbones.
New Stronger 4mm front pivot block screw.
New Lighter plastic eccentric housings for adjustment of belt tension and diff height.
Rigid servo mount directly onto transmission housing for precise steering.
Dirt protected with tight fitting body and undertray.
O ring wing mount system to avoid crash damage.
New Max sized rear wing.
Class leading suspension geometry with durable components and a range of optional alloy parts, offering adjustments to set up your CAT SX2 to any track conditions.
New more durable plastic pivot block system with the ability to adjust track width and toe in/toe out.
Adjustable rear roll centres, inboard toe-in/toe-out, anti squat and track width using optional alloy block Speed Secret parts.
Adjustable front roll centres, inboard toe-in/toe-out, track width and rake angle using optional alloy block Speed Secret parts.
New Pro spec big bore shocks with titanium nitride shafts, CNC machined pistons with recessed ‘e’clips, threaded collars, twin O ring sealing and diaphragm volume compensation.
Strong and rigid 4mm carbon fibre shock brackets.
New lighter plastic steering arms.
Check out the information page on the Schumacher site HERE (http://www.racing-cars.com/pp/Car%20Showroom/CAT%20SX2.html#)

Very nice.
The bits that interest me are:
New Lighter plastic eccentric housings for adjustment of belt tension and diff height
New Pro spec big bore shocks with titanium nitride shafts, CNC machined pistons with recessed ‘e’clips, threaded collars, twin O ring sealing and diaphragm volume compensation.
New more durable plastic pivot block system with the ability to adjust track width and toe in/toe out.
New lighter plastic steering arms.
Smooth twin pad slipper clutch with easy access adjustment running on a New tougher 5mm black spur gear. Using RW spurs, but interested in the mounting system
I'd like to know if they've changed the servo mounting system as the original I thought wasn't very good. Many other cars you just bolt the servo in on the Cat SX you've got this lining up rubbish. Too much what if on the mounting.
Glad to see the alloy mounts aren't included....
Other than that, my Cat SX has all the other bits :D
Also noticed that the Cat SX has come down in price. Doesn't bother me as Cat SX is my car for 4WD again this year.

I wonder how much it will cost to get to Sx2 spec from an original Cat??

Am I missing something here?
I bought a 2nd hand cat sx last week and installed the servo in it in about 30 seconds. Didn't have to line anything up. Two screws, and job done.

When I mount my Sanwa it doesn't fit perfectly between the gaps, so you end up scewing down on only a percentage of the tabs, rather than the whole tab if that makes sense.
Indeed bummer, oh well more money to spend.

So that would be an issue with your servo, not the cat :p.
I do understand what you mean now though!
looking at it though, with the exception of the big bore shocks, the SX2 appears to be a lesser spec'd version than the original SX, especially if you have the stegger brace on it and the modified layshaft.
Maybe the plastic hangers and diff adjusters are there to keep the cost down so the big bores can be included and the kit remain at a reasonable price.

I wondered if that was the case, but the Sanwa looks the same size as the other brands with the lugs etc. May see what a Savox looks like in it from my B4.
What servo are you using?
I have thought that too as it reduces costs. Another though is they may be moving away from the spacer set-up for toe in etc. I.e. you want 3 degree toe i there will be block A, 2 degree block B and so on.
Can you take a picture of your servo mounting and sending it to me?

I see some of the parts have gone up in the listings on the Schumacher site.
Alloy Front Blocks; 7.5 deg - Cat SX2
Alloy Front Blocks; 10.5 deg - Cat SX2
Wonder what these are as compared to the original Cat SX.
It may well be cheaper to sell the existing Cat SX and get a new one than upgrade :(

I doubt it if you have the chassis already! The only other big difference is the big bore shocks, but I can't see me gaining a lot from having them. The other upgrades are just little bits and pieces that you will/can replace over time as the original bits get worn out and/or damaged.

Sanwa servos are a touch shorter between mounting holes than KO and Futaba, so it could be a little more tricky.
That said, I know Si Moss runs for Sanwa, and I think Grant runs a Sanwa servo, and I definitely had a Sanwa in my prototype car - so they can definitely be used.
I actually ran the plastic blocks (and steering cranks for that matter) at the last national of last year, and the British indoor open thingy the other week. In the face of it, they seem quite strong. I hit a car very hard down the main straight in my last run, which in turn fired the car straight into the wall at the end of the main straight. Blocks fine, wishbone broken!

I wonder where the weak point will be now what with the stronger wishbones?
I know I used to bend hinge pins and have stress marks on the alloy 10-degree blocks after a large impact...

Re the plastic blocks, do they replace the shims for doing toe in etc. on the rear?
MattW
08-02-2010, 09:07 PM
Mikey, tbh I don't know as I didn't fit the rears. However, I suspect they will follow the same approach as the Mi4 ones.
These have toe molded into them, so if you want to make it wider, you use the same shims front and rear. If you want to change the toe you just add/remove shims from one end. Yes this does potentially put some strain on it - however, in plastic, this isn't an issue.

Sounds simpler and you now also have toe in on the hub with the new alloy hubs
Looks like a new chassis listed on the parts section, so it's basically virtually a new car :(

Interesting, I'll do some measuring later I think between my Savox and Sanwa!
Just taken my Savox out of my B4 and it fits the Cat SX much better and lines up nicely, the Sanwa is now going to go into the Cougar SV or maybe back into the B4 and I'll order another Savox.
Seen the cost of the big bore shocks etc. That'll be £80 for them, ouch...
I reckon selling the Cat SX for £150 would be a better option and then getting a new one....
£60 for the Cat SX2 springs! You're having a laugh!

You shouldnt need to do too much wiht the plastic hangers in terms of adjusting them with washers. The brackets are moulded to my standard geometry i ran last year, so prob only require the odd washer etc to suit you.

Is the chassis different to the updated LIPO chassis that became avaliable on the Cat last year?
Is it worth selling the current car for the new Cat, or is it just the big bore shocks to really get?
