Leaking diff so time for a re-build
Upon inspection i find the xrings are totally shot..
I noticed that there is some lateral movement if you wiggle the outdrive within the main diff gear.
So my question is do people shim between the outdrive (cup end) and the main diff gear?
I have read to make sure you "tap" the smaller gear onto the outdrive fully - which i did - of course how far it can go on is limited by the e-clip behind it.
The only other way of "tightening" the washer against the xring is to shim on the other (cup) side as described.
Just thought id ask what you guys do

Mine do the same, i think after a bit of use the 14t diff gear isnt tight on the outdrive hex as it was when new.

I know what your saying however
the smaller gear can only be pushed down onto the hex shaft as far as the e-clip as this stops it
with it fully seated mine still has lateral movement I.e you can wiggle the outdrive back n forth within the large diff gear
I wonder whether this allows additional pressure on the xring potentially causing it to fail?
I am going to try shims n see if using them still allows correct meshing of the gears
I get what you mean, how about trying a shim on the outdrive outside the gearbox then the mesh inside should still be the same?
Have you used any ass green slime on the xring, it helps with leakage quite a lot if you havnt tried some.

Yes I did use slime sam
will have a good look at shims n position when I finish building
where is best to get some peed x11 bearings sam?
Not finding at mo little akward to search prop on iPhone

you are putting a good quality grease on the X rings when you build the diff's
what grease are you using?
i never use green slime for diff's in any of my cars, allways a good grease, it helps seal the diff and also does not dry out, you dont want to be tight with the amount either.
shimming the out drive wont help other than loads the drive in the housing causuing heat

you if you know a way to take the 14 T. Diff gear out from the housing (without
cut the housing) whenn i whant to change the x ring?

I had used the gear grease that come with the car - guess ill use something different this time? Any reccomendations? Ideally something I could get from local car store on the way home-bury indoors this weekend
See yr point about shimming - I was thinking the play was the problem perhaps not?

I took the 14t gear out with a hex driver on the outdrive ten tapped it through
Got the one in the diff housing to do tonight

Never had a problem with leaking diffs since i used this stuff :thumbsup:
For the amount you need to use on your diffs this stuff will last you years. You racing at Bury this Sunday? Think im coming along but cant decide between Bury and Stotfold?

get a bearing rumbler fill it with dw40 and place the whole housing in leave for a while, take it out clean the greas off with a wrag then tap the out drive from the top, diff gear just falls off no hastle. i rebuild my diffs after every meeting and this works 100% of the time all of the time.

Thank you M.C. that make sence, I never needed, until today, to take the 14 tooth diff gear out, I always thought that it would be difficult once I will need to take the gear out from the housing because of the e-clip, then yesterday I saw the thread about diff, and I asked. tell me the nice red esc on your car, which one is it?
