advice for a new motor

hi guys, now i need some advice on which motor i should go for as i definatly need a new one. i also would like to know where the cheapest place for getting motor lube is. firstly though, i need a motor that has good torque (buggy), isnt too pricy, comes recomended and is reliable. im looking to spend about 10-20 pounds but dont personally know which motors are good,crap,unreliable,shite etc. but i know most of you guys do. oh yeah i nearly forgot, It needs to be no less than 14 Turn please. as i am currently using a 10 i think and my esc is literally nearly melting.

checkpoint or V2 motors are the best for ease of maintenance. And both are pretty quick an torquey.

To be honest for your budget you won't get anything new. Your best bet is see if someone has a second hand V2 motor for £20.
What speedo are you running? If it can handle the 10t then it should be fine with something like a 12x2. Not many people carry motors less than 12-13t, otherwise they switch to 19t. A good 19t motor, new for £30 would be your other option.

Id save a bit more and pick up a decent used V2 or such. £20 will probably get you a well used one which wont last all that long.

i sold a virtually brand new revolution 9x2 on ebay, went for £12 with a new in packet set of brushes! (i wasn't happy)
there are bargains out there.

my dad runs a 19x2 money motror in his xx4 indoors and its awsome, i run the same motor in my 2wd at bury regional just gone and it was ace, you will need some good ish cells to get the most out of the motor...

for ease it has to be the money motor fitted with the plutonium brushes not the standard ones which come with the motor that are 4 cell...
the only thing with these brushes they are costly but on the upside you will not need to skim youre motor for at least 60 runs i think it was.. just keep it tidy with some motor cleaner, i use the fastrax stuff and that seems good and i dont think its all that expensive..

i would have some motors for sale but i do not think they would suit youre speed controller, lol :cool: i was the guy who gave you that motor at that batley out door club meeting after rich lowe took one look at ur comm on ur motor and almost went white lol :rolleyes:

If your new your best bet is a 19t as woody always says slow is fast you will do better with a 19t than with a 12t if you are new to the sport i have been racing 2 years and 4 months been racing offroad 1 year and 4 months and i still use a 19t in my 2wd and i am still competative at regionals i had my best ever result the other weekend using a 19t racing against modifieds.

thanks alot guys, will look into getting one of those before then next buggy meeting at spenborough. so i need to get a peak dynasty v2 then? right. and plutonium brushes. i just want to be on the right track with this racing. my dads plays heck wen i let people mess around with my car. and then it stops working.

but those motors will require high amounts of mainternance so they are not a good idea unless you want to spend lots of money getting them skimmed and rebrushed everyweek.

Umm no they dont, i get 2 meetings out of a 9x2 reedy, with a higher wind ull get more, plus id rather run a hotter motor and skim it more often than run a slow 19, he's used to a 10!! k thanks.

most people i know who run Reedys skim them every two runs. how the hell do you get two meetings out of it? do they have a new endurance brush or something?

No, in a 2wd i just find it keeps going, a lot of people i speak to say the opposite so i don't know :D, i run comp brushes, 766's or 767's. I have a 12x1, 10x3, 11x3, and a 9x2 in reedy kr spec, i only run them in 2wd though.
I did Bury national with a 12x1 in 2wd with just one skim, although it had done a meeting previously.
With my v2 in 4wd i can just get one meeting, but sometimes ill be doing that every other run too.

There is very sound advice here with a 19t motor.

If it was that motor you ran at Batley when I was there there is no way it was a 10t, though I can't remember what it was I remember it's a budget speedo and their ratings are very often optimistic unless you want to run them on the edge.

19t motors are a great balance between speed and reliability, you will also have to do little maintenance and what you do have to do will help you learn.

Get either a checkpoint or a V2 (angled brushes) style 19t motor. For the money you'll HAVE to look second hand at ebay. Don't stress your equipment too much by trying to get anything too fast. Those ribs won't handle it for starters ;)

Agreed - a 19 turn V2 motor is the way to go, I've had one for years and it's awesome. Loads of speed and very driveable.

Sorry i didn't realise he was a beginner, a 10 for a starter is way too hot. I have a Peak Dynasty which has only been used literally a couple of times then put in a box. Yours for £23 posted, skimmed and rebrushed.

I agree that this is a good plan. Said motor should suit your speedo + batteries well.

From my own experience of starting out again my 10x2 is very hard to drive and I've had my best races with my 15 year old 14X3 which I would guess has similar performance to a modern 19T. The top end speed is still fine with this old motor but getting the power on is much easier and predictable and allows more focus on getting the cornering right without spinning out.
