Yep, the same post is in the Kyosho Forum. OH NOES!!!!!!ONE!!111ONE11!!!!!!SPAM ALERT!!!!!!1111!!!ONEONE!!!11!!!!ONE!!!
Well then, I've not been out to play with any toy cars (apart from a smelly borrowed truggy, whilst still drunk) for over a year now, so to keep me occupied over this time I've had myself a little project! I'll stress it's not taken me a year to do this, I've just been fiddling here and there with it and taking breaks of about 4 months between actually doing anything to the car!
Yep, I've joined the mid-motor brigade with my RB5, but I've done things a little differently to the masses.
Basically I've now got a flat plate chassis (cheapo lookalike CF from Fibrelyte) with the RB5 front end grafted on to it, and using saddle pack lipo, a la AC S2. Unlike the S2, I've got room for a standard servo with the receiver behind it! :)
Now, you're asking what about the main working area, namely the gearbox. I've basically got the motor running in its normal direction, and got it mounted to a Yokomo MX4/MR4 belt drive gearbox. This alows the ESC to be mounted on the opposite side (yet to get that done though, as I've no soldering iron :( )
The rear wishbones are mounted with the same inboard toe in as the standard RB5 kit, with Schumacher mounting blocks from the old Mi2, giving about 2' anti squat (I think). Up from there we've got a lovely new MX4 C/F shock tower and an old skool wire wing mount.
Body wise I've got a used X6 body on there at the moment (cheers Doddy!), but I reckon the Azarashi X6 body will go on too, and be a nicer shape and fit to the chassis.
Last thing to sort is a more secure fit for the bodyshell (namely an undertray or side clips such as with the standard RB5) then it's time to get a test run done!
Pics will follow at some point, when I can be arsed to get a camera out.

Right, as promised here are some pics of my creation.
Remembered a couple more jobs that need doing, need to make a brace for over the top of the back wishbone hangers, to sure them up, and make a top-deck for the front.
Apologies for the blurry quality, the dog was trying to eat it while i was taking the pics...

Nice work! I like the battery posts! Might want some sort of retaining tray (ala B44 etc), for the lipos, but thats uber neat.

The thought occured a few times, especially when i was dremelling the rear gearbox to death... but I refrained from giving it a beating and resorted to nooob bashing on MW2.... get in...

I've actually got that on my to-do liost, but forgot to put it here. cheers for the comments though. :)
Also needing a smaller spur gear, think it's running the standard B4 one at the mo (using the Yokomo MR4BC upgraded slipper) and there's not much room for pinions. Smaller spur is easier than dremelling, and less rotating mass!

Could you move the motor onto the other side and add an idler to make it feel like a 4 gear tranny?
RLGfx
17-03-2010, 06:26 PM
nope, and i can't say what it feels like yet anyway as it's not turned a wheel... The little go I had of Phil Channons 3 gear X6 a long time ago was good, and it should have suited me better than a 4 gear I think as it has more on-power steering than the 4 gear (apparently). Haven't really driven any mid motor cars in anger, so probably wouldn't be able to tell you the difference anyway!
As long as it's less likely to pick up the front wheels than a standard rear motor car, but retains most of the characteristics of the RB5 i'll be happy!
Now to decide on a name......

It's also finished and ready to play with! :D:D
Pics are below, comments welcome!:) Apologies for pic quality, I'm at the parents and forgot my camera, so it's all taken on the phone.

What happened with this interesting chassis then?
RLGfx
12-07-2011, 07:09 PM
dead easy to cut, it's basically GRP with a thin layer of carbon on either side - Cheating! :D
No more progress, waiting for bits at the moment to rebuild it, then I'll make a new rear shock tower, then I'll probably wait about 6 months to try and play with it somewhere...
RLGfx
17-07-2011, 06:25 PM
Well I've got a new belt waiting for me, and found another MX4 rear shock tower in the bits box, so just waiting on the rear diff pulley to arrive and then it'll be rebuild time.
Then it'll be a case of take some time off to get down to england where they actually race off-road and I'll try it again!

Right, Bringing everyone back up to date with this!
I ran the car for the first time in anger at Kidderminster 2wd regional recently, and all I can say is that I was letting the thing down!
It was hugely stable over the bumps, despite only being 10g above the 2wd limit (with about 50g lead added it comes in at about 1485g/1490g depending upon tyres, lipo etc). The speed could do with coming up a little, but not running 5 year old TrackPower 3200 saddles might fix that!
Despite this being the first real race (only done a smelly nitro meeting, one club night and the Oswestry GP in 3 years) I was able to put in some consistent lap times with the car, and not once did it try to pick up the front wheels, despite the grip being huge!
OK, so the bad points:
1 - Not enough Toe-in at the rear - So couldn't get the power down quite as hard as I'd have liked.
The design of the chassis is the limiting factor here, as I can't use different toe blocks from the standard car. I need to either use a rear outboard toe-in hub (any ideas here?), or find some other mounting blocks (I have a plan there, involves a bit more dremel work though!).
2 - Lack of adjustment on Top shock mounting holes.
Because I'm using the wing mounting holes on the original MX4 shock tower, I've only got one mounting hole for the top of the shocks. Not toooo big an issue really, I can just drill some more, can't really do it trackside though!
3 - Yokomo Diff Sydrome
As any one who has owned either a YZ-10 or MX4 can tell you, the diff screw coming undone is a right royal pain. Need to find a way to fix this permanently, as cleaning then using superglue clearly isn't ideal!
4 - Rear track too narrow
Easy fix this one, I just need to get hold of some thicker drive hexes. (probably got some in the loft on an old car!)
Overall am really pleased with it, certainly didn't drive like a home build abortion, it was actually really drivable and felt like there was much more to come out of it.
Anyway, not sure when it'll next come out, but will hopefully have these bits done to try it again.
edit to add - Neil caught it on camera! only one pic, but it's the furthest right in his reel of pics from Kiddy, at 3:47 in the vid! :D :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8BSP8fc6s4

Cheers, shouldn't have been shy!
It was good, I think I was letting it down to be honest. It's currently sat in front of me waiting on me getting the motivation to do something with it...
looks pretty good! next thing I would do is a bodyshell

meh.... the X-6 squared body fits fine, keeps the muck out and has the cab in the right place...
Maybe and Azarashi or a Phat Bodies X6 will go on there if I get my airbrush up and running again, but I'm more worried about getting it working properly first!
