Another mid-motor RB5...

Finally got round to working on this... more pics to come.

Base is a 3mm carbon fiber plate with additional 5mm bracing on the sides.

Still to finish up the rear shocktower mount, battery strap and probably a motor plate brace.

thinking of attempting something like this myself but how do you cut your carbon fibre sheet???

Metalsaw than sandpaper sticked to a piece of wood or plastic or metal block- justto have flat surface.

Dont think the carbon fiber is an unobtanium unmachinable material.
But you can mill it or cut it with waterjet. Does not matter if its a prepreg carbon or just wet press made.

I've seen some really awesome projects here on Oople that cut the CF by hand.

I used a Sherline mill with a carbide endmill for this project though.

Rear needed to be milled for proper fitment of the various parts (hingepin blocks, gearbox, etc.

Batteries are held in place with locators on the chassis and a battery strap on top.

Thanks. That's a re-release Sand Scorcher primed and ready for paint. Going to install LEDs in there too. :lol:

Can't wait to see that. I've seen your projects and they are amazing - esp done by hand! Have you run your cars with / without the idler mod? I'm wondering if the mid RB5 would benefit from this and if I should try to fit one in there.

I have tried the idler mod once on a hi-grip indoor track, but I think it is best suited for outdoor low-grip. Didn't like it at all.:thumbdown: Gives the car alot of forward rear grip when accelerating but vice versa when under brakeing. So stay with the 3-gear tranny.

Have you thought of a centralised gear-box brace not including the motor plate? Otherwise you will get different chassis-flex left to right.

Tested the car today and things seemed pretty good with the 3-gear tranny. I know on my CR2 the 4-gear worked wonders on the car. I do run on a outdoor medium-loose track so the 4-gear might be an option on the looser days.

Thought about a centralized brace... maybe something ala X-6 squared with something mounting to the top of the battery strap - but that means I need a more secure battery strap though.

Something that would take more time would be to just mill out something to go around the motor like I did sometime ago on my first mid-motor project LOSI...

Looking at your pic of Losi Mid, the fiberglass used remembered me the ones sold by apexmodels looong time ago. I like it very much, easy to work on. Now only can have Kamtec but isn't the same finish.

Decided to bring the car for a race test yesterday and it ran great! Upped the oil in the rear to 40wt for a tad more damping in the rear to even out some chassis slap issues and it worked like a charm. I was most impressed with how the car jumped - it was doing the local triples better than my 4WD!

Pleased to report the car came home with TQ and A Main champ honors!

That's a reproduction JRX2 bodyshell from Team Blue Groove but the material isn't great. It held up for a few sessions but has suffered bad cracks everywhere.

I've since painted up a X-6 body shell for the car.

It's been more than a decade since I built this car. It was originally built and raced on a loose dirt track but in the current age of high-grip astroturf I wondered how this old creation would perform.

Got it up and running and it ran amazingly well! So much so I've decided to try to improve it even further with some 3D printing that was not so common a decade ago. :)
