Having just acquired a ZX5, I realize the setups above are all... removed?!
I used to hang around with a 1989 ZXR MKII since new (!) but lately its spares are getting harder to find...
I realize I'm reviving a very old thread, but I hope there is... hope?!

Here is what I am (at least for now) going to use as my base damp astro / multi surface set-up.
Front
Shocks;
2C pistons 30wt (AE)
Losi silver springs
mid mount on wishbone
mid mount on tower
Ride height arms just below level
Camber link mid on bulkhead, outer on upright .. no washers @ either end
-1deg camber
10deg castor blocks, #2 above front arm mount (LAW31)
1mm spacer under ballstud on steering arm to limit bump steer with the 10deg blocks
0deg toe
Kit ackerman
Rear
Shocks;
2B pistons 25wt (AE)
Losi pink springs
mid mount on wishbone
mid mount on tower
Ride height arms level
Camber link inner on bulkhead, outer on upright .. no washers inner, kit 2mm outer.
-1deg camber
#2 under front arm mount
kit 0 deg uprights
2.5deg toe (A25 block)
Cells forward
Novak 5.5R geared 19/78 Sphere setting 2-2-0-0
shaft one-way, diffs just tight enough not to slip both front and rear ... slipper set so as to just give on highest grip section of track.
Ballistic Pink Mini spike, not cut, with DC Racing light blue foams (JC Losi fitting wheels front and rear .... Poline axles for rear and machined front hexs to allow fitment)
The car was easy to drive but maybe a little nervious for some tastes (in which case 35wt oil in the front would help calm it down a bit). Can be thrown around and will not bite.
If dry try Ballistic buggy green mini spikes and if then becomes twitchy then go to 35wt front oil (40wt if too nervious). If grip is higher consider Losi Green front springs and Losi Red rear springs.

The sheet is a blank JPG ...... All credit goes to Billy .... I didn't make this sheet!!!!!

After much playing I have arrived at this as a base set-up for dry astro, seems to work everywhere but was worked through at Kidderminster.
This will give the car a lot of steering and it will work better the harder you push ....

Hi guys,
Just came back from the Players where I've done a lot of setting up on the FS and finally got the car about where I want it to be. Here's my final setup which was giving me laptimes similar to the guys i'd normally be racing:
Front
Shocks : 3B pistons, 40W oil, inside on tower, middle on wishbone, cap unscrewed 3 turns
Turnbuckles : inside on hub with 3mm spacers, outside on gearbox with -1mm spacers (lower ball stud)
Hubs : 7°, spacer at the bottom, 3mm bump steer with normal ball studs (actually tamiya ball nuts with a screw coming from under the knuckle so it doesn't strip), 1.5mm for ackermann
2mm under front suspension block
Front diff
Rear
Shocks piston 2 holes drilled at 1.5mm, silver springs, out on tower in on wishbone
turnbuckles : outside on hub with 2mm, middle on gearbox with -1mm (same as front), UM519 hubs (or actually std suspension graphite hubs on top hinge pin hole, which is exatly the same).
1mm anti squat, short wheelbase, 3° toe in, silver driveshafts, rear 1.2mm ARB.
No dam on wing, 4° angle, mid position on the tower.
That's about it, car was getting good finally, was an absolute dream to fly it, it'd take the mega jump and land it spot on (unless i'd overcooked it and overshot the down ramp but that was the same for everyone) every time.
Many thanks to Adam SKELDING for his setup help all the week end, Nathan Ralls for his previous help and RogerM for pointing out the difference in the rear hubs !!!

Panch,
I've been chatting to Rich and if he wants me too I am more than happy to go through the set-ups on the FS with him face to face with the cars in front of us. I can explain everything Fab is doing as he and I are in regular communication.
As far as I am aware there is no set-up sheet for the FS as yet but in the main the SP sheet is usable!
here you have regarding FS setup during Players

Arno, can we have the option for a king pin ball-stud, option for rear upright/hub type & cell position.
Also can we have it in something like a JPG small enough to be able to post directly up on here please?
I'll let you know what I was running today on grass, car was mighty!

In the absence of an editable set-up sheet I can post here please see the text below;
Ledbury pre-regional, won the main final and qualified well in first session, TQ'd second session and won final after a horror start that left me last, car very confident and could be pushed really hard!
High grip grass and a mix of packed and loose sandy dirt sections .... rough in places, really rough in others. Some good jumps and a couple of tricky sections.
Front end
Shocks: 35wt AE oil, 2C pistons, #70 Silver springs (1.5 coils removed)
mid on tower, mid on wishbone, ride hieght:- shafts just below level
Links:-shortest possible, 0mm bulkhead, 2mm outer, -1.5deg camber
10deg castor blocks, no spacer between front hingepin mount and gearbox
1mm ARB
Steering; all as per kit other than 0.5deg toe in, black short ball stud on knuckles to reduce bumpsteer
Rear
Shocks: 25wt AE oil, 2B pistons, #68 blue springs
mid on tower, in on wishbone, ride hieght:- shafts level
Links:-outer on hub - mid on bulkhead, 2mm bulkhead, 2mm outer, -1.5deg camber
1.2mm ARB
#4 spacer under forward hingepin mount, #1 spacer under rear
SP width @hingepin mounts and black driveshafts
(will change to FS width when parts available to do so as I feel the car would benefit from the rised roll centres)
Cells forward (E-Power 4500 NiMh)
Wing low, mid angle
Novak 6.5L geared 23 against kit spur
Tyres: Ballistic Buggy green mini spikes when grass slightly damp (good on the loose dirt, less so on the packed surfaces). Schumacher yellow mini spikes when fully dry. Both sets of tires in very shape but not brand new, both sets with the outer row cut from the front tires.
Now here is the suprise ....... front one-way!
Woody is right, on this car you car practically swap between the one-way diff and a true diff whilst changing nothing else on the set up, never came across another car able to do that.
I ran most of the day on a diff then the track was changed to one that needed a more point and squirt style and Brian Preddy suggested a change to a one-way. The major benefit was that the jump sections didn't flow and the one-way would allow you to roll forward easier if the car landed nose down were as the diff unsettled the car. Earlier in the day when the jumps flowed I ran the diff to benefit from the extra brakes.

The original ZX5 had 3 holes on the hub carriers for ride height adjustment. The new hubs on the SP's and FS's have one hinge pin hole. The SP came with LA252 hubs that have one hole (the middle hole on the original hubs) and the FS comes with UM519 hubs (same as the top hole on the original hubs). You can use either hub on the cars depending on how you want to set up ride height and/or roll center.

Roger, have you info on whats different between the hingepin mounts on the SP and the LA271 mounts that the FS kit comes with? I've never heard of any change there (except the part #) The SP mounts come with the bulkheads....LA209 or LA210, and on the FS the bulkheads were changed (dropping the diffs lower in the chassis) so maybe its just a part # change?
The FS also comes with the RB5 midarm hubs, UM519 and the UM510 driveshaft set (shiny 62.5mm standard RB5 ones, which are 2mm longer than the black SP shafts). I'm thinking that if anything, the FS hingepin mounts would have to widen the car some to avoid any issues with the longer bones plunging too deep into the outdrives. If thats the case, then you might be able to adjust for that with the LAW36 and LAW37 aluminum mounts (which just about anyone that converted their SP to an FS is probably running already) using the correct inserts.
And you said something about the roll center change with these, so are you thinking that these mounts have the hinge pin height altered to change the roll center?
I'll have to look into that this weekend and maybe pick at Joe Pillars and see if he knows any details about this.
RogerM
21-04-2009, 11:45 AM
The hinge pin mounts are approx 2mm further apart between centres on the FS, hence the 62.5 mm driveshafts.
Yes there is enough adjustment with the LAW36/37 mounts, that is what I am using .... but only just enough
The new bulkheads are part numbers LA262 and LA263

Thats what I thought. In fact over the weekend, I was racing with another Kyosho driver out here and his FS had different inserts in his LAW36/37 mounts. I believe his rear inserts were "B" instead of the standard "C". He wasnt sure what his front insert was (Chukuba, one of the Japanese r&d guy told him to "put these in", so he did)

Thanks

zaskar Are you currently running lipos in you FS
If you are i have a few questions for you.
What lipos are you running.
How much weight did you have to add to make it legal
Did you have to modify the chassi to get the lipos to fit.
Cheers

Hi,
First, sorry for my english:), i only have ran the car one time with Lipo, it was a first test. The Lipo are Intellect 4200 30C and yes, i have to modify the chasis. The car with this cells weighs 1580 gr.
what is the addicional weigh we need to run the car with Lipo and have a good balance?¿?¿? i supose that is the question... today, i don't know

I'd love to help mate but on this occassion I can not, I have no access to LiPos to do any trials with. Sorry
If it's any help Richard is asking because his car was massively under wieght (something like 100g) with his track power 3200s in.
Also to give you a guide my set-ups are based on a car weight of around 1700g so about 200g over the minimum weight limit as I use NiMh.
If you find an answer / good set-up balance then pleae let us know.
Guess the easy way is to add a piece of brass or lead under the battery to equal the nimh cell weight, then use a standard setup. The ideal is to put the weight in the car to help the balance/control, possibly softer springs/oil. Perhaps look at the X6, B44, D4 forums to see how drivers are adjusting these cars.
Roger, looks like google doc's are allowing the upload/sharing of pdf's now, worth a look ?
For those who still run the car.
My setup for the ZX5-FS from Stotfold is now on Petit RC.
After a little help from Mick Cragg the car feels its best ever, 1s per lap faster than it was before whilst easier to drive.

Rear.
Black #50, 3A's, 30wt AE oil, Middle tower, inside arm, 1A link inside-inside 2mm under hub ballstud, 2 notch under B' block and nothing under A.
Notes.
Shocks mounted at rear, Mid-arms, inserts are E and C for 3 deg's with the Alloy rear block set. 60g of weight in channel between batts. Running Vampire 4400 lipos and ISTC Nosram.
No roll bars.

Simon, very interesting to see a light weight set-up for the FS.
Have you done any back-back testing light weight to normal? If so how does the car compare in terms of drivability?
Reason I ask is that I'm curious as to if running a light car becomes a really handfull or not as my main reason for not going LiPo is that I see no point if your then adding weight back to make the car back to the same weight as NiMh!
SimonW
16-11-2009, 07:58 PM
Only run the car 3 times. I must say that it is alot more drivable now and faster cos' of the lipos. Sunday at Stotfold was first time out with the light set-up and it was lacking steering at the start of the day but each time i changed something it got better, next is to try short wheelbase and see if that works or not! I have a suspicion it will. The single most difference was changing to mid-arms, the rear just seems more planted, hence standing the front shocks up 1 from kit. Noticed that he car drives flatter cos' of the lowered diffs to.
Gentlemen,
Roger drop me an e-mail with some setup sheets for Kidderminster, Coventry and PDA. They are online for those who are looking for such information.

PDA set-up was a compromise as I didn't have much time to change the car from it's generic astro / grass base set-up at this event ... talk about a fast paced meeting!
I have a revised version for Cov from the very cold meeting last weekend but can't save it in a suitable format :(
Basically it's the same as the previous Cov one except
Front, 2mm under inner ball stud, 0mm under outer, 3B piston
Rear, no rear ARB, 1 pip spacer under rearmost rear hinge pin bracket and rearmost toe insert changed to D out
cells mounted in back position
Car was VERY good in this configuration on a track that was quite slippy in places. This might well become my starting 'wet' astro set-up. Early on I tried to run the car in permenant 4wd, this proved to be a disaster with DNFs in practice and the first 2 rounds, one-way refitted and car was born again ... back to it's normal self and a joy to drive.

How much do people make use of the roll bars as it's not something I've generally used before?
RogerM
02-10-2010, 05:17 AM
They are predominately used to weigh your spares box down a fraction :)
Seriously, forget them unless your going indoors on a TC style track as the car has no need for them on UK style tracks!

Cool, pretty much what I thought as I'm yet to use a roll bar on any of my cars.
Hopefully it won't take long to get set-up right (now where is the bloody postman with my springs etc!)

Hi guys,
I'm in need of a bit of help for a set up for a low traction smooth sports hall track. Our club changes the track every week so I am looking for a good base setup to get me started. The floor is slippery and we run schuie full spikes as a control tyre. Apart from that I have had some tweeks from some club members but no-one else races a kyosho so I am a bit lonley on the setup front...also i am new to the sport & club so don't want to annoy everyone with too many questions too soon :)
Any ideas where to get started would be great, I have tried petit rc but there are no sports hall setups (for the standard lazer) & as it is an older car not expecting any to show up either!
Thanks chaps - hope someone can help :)

Sorry for daft question, but you have Gold Springs on Front, orange on rear? Are these xgear springs as I thought..
Super Hard - OrangeHard - YellowMedium Hard - RedMedium - GoldMedium Soft - WhiteSoft - Pink
So you have harder springs on rear?
Interested to know what the kit springs are for both the FS SP and the RB5 SP WC too.
RogerM

I believe that the springs have been reversed on the set up sheet by accident, I was at one of those meetings and was looking over Kev's car so I'm relatively confident of that statement.
I "believe" that the springs are not X-gear springs but equivelent rates to pink front / red rear on the Sp2-WC and yellow front / red rear on the FS2-sp ... I say believe as that is the info I have not because I've handled the new kits (hopefully FS2-sp very soon though)

I did wonder, orange one rate harder than yellow!
Ah I see, I mis read your post a few times, so kit springs are not x-gear, but on the fs2 sp they are equivalent to yellow front /red rear and on rb5 wc equiv to pink front / red rear? That makes sense too looking at the parts list, thanks - for some reason I have gold as the kit rear springs on the fs2 sp

Sorry for daft question, but you have Gold Springs on Front, orange on rear?
Sorry, a little mistake there.. all corrected now

I will try Kev Lee Telstar 12/2011 set up, any update or new things to test?
Thanks

Kevs setup will certainly get you going round quickly enough to tune from, I think it works really well on a flat carpet track with well constructed jumps :)

Does anyone have a good starting setup for an FS2 SP on grass yet? Would be good to get my car dialled in for Sunday at SDRCC.

Great to hear
I'm not sure it's clear, but that was a setup for for medium grip carpet. I'd probably start somewhere close on grass but maybe a touch higher ride height and go from there. It wont be far off though I'm sure. If its cold you may need to go to softer oils.

Reminds me need to get a decent outdoor setup on mine...
Thanks for the set up.
Just 2 questions:
Better feel with "small bore" at Silverstone?
Law43 drop down with FS2SP rear wishbones?
InsideLineModels

Yeah, i prefer the small bore shocks there as I felt the car reacted a bit quicker.
The law43 drop down kit comes with modified fs2 wishbones that have a machined portion the accept the drop down.
See here (http://www.the-pred.co.uk/zencart/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&search_in_description=1&keyword=Law43)
Thanks Kev.
Really good advices!

Thanks Kev, my Lazer's first proper outdoor meet of the year was great. Managed a 1,2,2 in the finals. Car was very consistent, flew well, and was very strong. Can't wait for round 2.

Is it possible to have a bigger sheet? I can't read the small comments :bored:
Some questions for Mr Lee if you don't mind:
-RR suspension holder is LMR?
-I see you decreased the front kick-up. Is it for more turn-in?
Many thanks
Comments seems to be the same as here (http://www.petitrc.com/setup/kyosho/setupzx5fs/ZX5FS2SP_KevinLee_Coventry20111127/index.html) or here (http://www.petitrc.com/setup/kyosho/setupzx5fs/ZX5FS2SP_KevinLee_Silverstone20111227.pdf) plus "LAW43 drop down on rear wishbone"

Sorry for the low quality.. I tried to reduce it enough to get it on here but obviously went a bit too far.
There was something a bit funny with that PDF I used and it kept overwriting stuff in random boxes.. I didn't notice the LMR thing. That should be "F" giving 3 degrees inboard toe.
I think the front kick up was as per kit, but yes, it should give more initial with less kick up.
I'll get an updated setup sheet to Arno in the next few days as i have a pretty good outdoor setup now (although its not far off the indoor one). I ran at Stotfold Winter series on sunday and the car worked well in the wet and the dry (showers all day).
Cheers

HI guys.
This WE we have a big race in France. Tom Cockerill will be there.
It's a real "english race" for us... new astro and a lot of rain for sure.
Is somebody could tell me what to do to make the FS2 an ace on the sleepy astro?
My basic set up is the kev lee kampenhout's set up.
Thanks a lot....
