Hi Mole2k.
When you are out and about taking photo's of these wonderful rally cars could you get some of Alastair Fischer in the Irish Fiesta sporting trophy please. My Brother co-drives for him in the british series of the fiesta's.
Cheers Mark

I should see him in kilarney I would imagine, I didnt see any of the fiesta's in Galway earlier this year because we didnt stay on the stages that long. Depending on the situation if I see any of them through i'll take pictures .

Good stuff! what are you using for the remote flash? is it corded or are you using a PW, or...? I bought some cheap ebay slave and it was a bit crap and stopped working rather quickly so I'd like to get something a little more professional and robust some time.

I've got 3 portable flashes that I use for stuff like that. I've got a Canon 550ex, 580ex, and a nixon sb-26 that I use as a slave. The cool thing about the Canon Flashes is that they can wirelessly sync to one another. For that flash shot I used two flashes. One mounted on the camera and one to the left of the camera.

Can you fire the off-camera flashes with the on-camera not firing? can it see around corners? or is it running on infrared or something?

I know the Nikon stuff has similar abilities but I only have an sb800 and sb400 - the Sb400 can fire off the bigger flash but has no controls on it whatsoever so its pretty limiting at the moment. Another sb800 is a lot of money, and I would prefer to buy cheaper flashes (like the older nikon sb28) and control them with a 3rd party device if it's reasonable cost.

The Canon wireless link system is basically line of sight. If it could should around corners I would be stoked. Yes, the master flash can trigger the slave flash to go off without flashing it's self. The picture of the Kyosho truggy was done with 3 flashes as well. I use the nikon flash simply b/c its works pretty good as a slave unit with plenty of power.

These are supposed to work ace Jimmy, if you want wireless TTL without buying quantums.
I might get some as it'd make life a bit easier for certain shots.

They'll only work with iTTL/eTTL flashes though mate. If you want to use old SB-28's probably best sticking to some normal radio triggers. My mate got some off ebay he said were good, but i got bowens pulsars, which arent cheap but not as much as pocket wizards.

Get rid of the overcast sky? Cars always look better in high light. Of course that's not always an option, more of a joke.

Your shutter speed was quite low though. Compare the front springs to the rear springs.

The car would look better, in that particular picture, if it were centered in the frame, not off to the side.

That section of the track looks like rubbish, the old green/brown/dirty astro and whatnot in the background. Try an angle that removes that area, maybe if you stand up, or catch cars that are further out in the turn, or even stand on the inside of the turn.

My main advicde is turn up the shutter speed, though.

Just my opinions.

@ RookieBOB - a good effort, it just looks like you were plain and simple struggling for enough light.

Whilst the shutter speed (1/1250) is fine for freezing the action, your chosen aperture (f5.6) hasn't given enough depth of field to get the whole car from front to back in focus at that focal length. The effect can be quite pleasing so keep experimenting, only in this case it may have looked better if the front of the car, where all the dynamic stuff is happening, rather than the rear was in sharp focus.

Cropping in closer to the car would also get rid of that messy and distracting astro in the background. With a bit more practice and some more forgiving light you'll get the hang of it.

A few less dynamic shots from my weekend, had orders to leave the camera at home but ignored them...

Very nice photos mate.

If you want a good photoshop equivalent, you need a programme called "GIMP". Stupid name, awesome software. Just as powerful as photoshop, perhaps a little harder to use.... but it's free!

http://www.gimp.org/

It's a multi-platform programme, designed for Linux (where I use it) but works perfectly fine on windows. Make sure you download the windows version though. Great tutorials here: http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/ including increasing dynamic range, sharpening without noise increase, selective colouring etc.

Cheers dude. Its not as easy as taking photos of Rc, because with rc you have loads of laps and for example, you will know that Lee Martin will clear the tripple every lap, so you can get ready for the photo. With the bmx racing they only come down once so you don't know if they are going to clear the big jumps. So I ended up taking hundreds and hundreds of photos just because you can't predict what each rider is going to do.

I awoke early one morning to watch (from Kennedy Space Center) a rare morning launch. Well it was over cast and I could not see the launch site. I then decided to take my son (8) fishing. We left the house about 5 minutes before the launch (like 5:30 am). We listened on the radio as to how it was a perfect launch, lovely and bright. Well we started across the bridge that takes us off the island toward where we were going to fish, a great little hole you have to canoe to but worth the trip. Well we started north across the bridge and looked to the east and the sky was totally clear almost and you could see the vapor trail and plume from the rocket. This is what it looked like......

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/RURC/Sunrise%20clouds%20and%20trails/100_9390.jpg

It looked so wild that we stopped on the bridge and took a photo.

Bondy!!
Unfortunately the old track is no longer. As class as it was, it was a 'health and safety' thing, as the old track got a bit too fast, and having a 15ft drop directly into a right hand turn wasn't too good an idea.:woot:
We used to have hours of fun jumping off the big jump and landing on our chins!!! Ouch!! Some class injuries were acheived.

its now more of an 'American style' track with a S shape to the layout and loads of huge jumps instead. Its all compact up the top end now and is pretty much all in th space before where the first table top used to be.

G

P_B
04-07-2008, 09:02 AM
@ losixxx - good point, will begin to include that info. Any existing ones you want info for, pm me and I'll have a look in the archives.

@ Northy - A tripod is essential, then preferably a dull day or twilight. Set a low ISO and a small aperture (typically f8 or higher) and watch the shutter speed drop. Anything over 1/4 sec will begin to capture the flow, over 2 secs will start to give that 'silky' effect so experiment and see. Use a remote shutter release or self-timer for steadier shot. The beer can is optional :D

The 'silky' water effect also makes the water look like it was moving fast but in reality it may of just been trickling down!

any settings with pics would be ace as men dont read manuals

Stu
07-07-2008, 07:46 PM
Mike - the manual will not tell you how to take good photo's, just what the buttons do.

Picking up hints & tips is good, but really you just need to get it out of auto & try loads of mad stuff to see what comes out.

Some of the best images come from intentionally going against accepted rules.

JCJC
07-07-2008, 08:15 PM
Try taking the same shot over & over using auto, then all the settings you can find, digital = free and no need to take notes, the settings are in the picture exif file. Then look to see whats different, blur on moving objects, depth of field, colour. I have often thought the "stream" shot applied to car racing could be a nice picture - static background & blurry cars.......there is a arty one out there somewhere.
Shoot into and with the sun, bracket the exposure - that AV+- button, same shot - see how they change, see what you like. Early morning/late evening sun.........warmer & softer.....but you need the same subject from much the same spot so you can compare.

Chris, I had this problem and these are the first pictures of mine that have appeared "full size".. in fact, too large (sorry everyone).

I registered with photobucket.com and then uploaded my pictures to it. You get four different types of html for different situations. copy the one with IMG at the start then just paste them in here.. it seems to work. My mistake was not resizing the photo's to appear smaller when i uploaded them.

Then those men will generally take pretty rubbish pictures, Mike.

Unless you only ever take one kind of shot, there are no magic settings. You will need to know what various settings are available, how to adjust them on your particular camera and how each adjustment will affect the final image.

Just like RC there's no substitute for simply going out and practicing, but reading the manual really is the first step if you want to successfully graduate from using idiot mode anytime soon.

Well I have only recently got myself a dSLR (40D) and have been playing around with it. In particular I have been using my 70-200mm L f/4.0 lens, and also using a 1.4x extender with this lens for some shots. So I thought I'd share a bit of a mixed bag, all these photos taken within the last week using my 40D and it just so happens all of these with my 70-200mm lens as well.

Did some MTB stuff a few months back for a mate's club, a difficult day but useful learning experience using multi-flash setup and full manual mode. Didn't bother polishing them up, just converted the RAW files and sent him a disc. Think I only put one of them up on this thread.

Little did I know he uploaded a full set to flickr and earlier in the week, via this friend, I had an email from a publishing company who want to use some in their next book - couple of small images and a full page print. Got all the details sorted in writing over a few emails and fingers crossed I should get my copy of the book late Autumn.

So, here are the pics that are effectively paying for my Southport weekend - bonus!

Well airshow was last weekend, but OMFG, my internet has been down for a whole week. Life without net is hard! Anyway.... back now.

So here's a couple of photos I took there.

My website is under process of a total redesign to a totally tableless (100% css layout as well as style) design, and as such I haven't bothered putting link on photo page, however I uploaded all my airshow photos, link here:

Thanks.

I got very lucky with light really. There was patchy cloud, and the light got through a gap to just light part of the smoke trail making it look very dramatic. if I was confident with touching photos in photoshops I'm sure I could make it more dramatic... but I'm not.

It's not too dissimilar from a photo I saw of red arrows on here a while back, by you I think. Anyway I just copied the URL's from my website for last lot (was being lazy), here's a better res and quality vesion:

Thanks for the complements guys. No, I don't put food on the table with photography...... I am an Engineer/Program Manager by day. I kinda gave up the Motorsport Photography thing just over a year ago. I was spending too much money on travel, out of my own pocket and grew tired of "competition" and attitudes with other photographers. Sometimes I thought I was in high school! I do miss it though. I didn't do it for the money, did it cause I love it, truely relaxes me.

No, I don't live in Cali, just moved to Alabama from Michigan. I am a Ford nut, so when Ford was the marquee at the Historics at Seca a few years ago, I had to go. It was awesome.

The CTS-V might be ugly, but they are cool to see run. Nothing like a de-tuned Vette motor in a 4-door!

Thanks again.

The 20d is a bit old now but it's a fantastic camera mines still going strong even after 40k shots being ran through it in the 2 1/2 years i've had it. I probably wont upgrade untill this breaks or I suddenly become magically rich so I can afford a 1D.

When i picked it up it just felt like it fell into my hand perfectly and all the buttons were in just the right places, it seems a smaller camera compared to some and i like that; i have fairly small hands.

Im still trying to persuade my dad, i recon i need my own DSLR for my photography course at college, wouldnt you agree? :D

14-08-2008, 11:14 PM
Deffinately! You can learn so much more with a dlsr because it lets you see the effects different things have in real time and the 20d has more than capable of tackling anything i've thrown at it so far.

I was looking at the prices of 20D's the other day and they are absolute steals for just over £200 for fairly low shutter count. They are very sturdy, i've bashed mine about dropped it got it soaking went and given it loads of abuse and it just keeps taking pictures. Mine has recently started occasionally freezing, I think im gonna get some compressed air and blow out all battery, cf card and other contacts to make sure it's not something there causing it.

Im just trying to decide on what to do for this trackpower competition, I have a few shots I took tonight and a few more idea's to try if we get the weather!

More and more great stuff appearing on this thread and some fresh contributors too  Josh, whilst lenses are more important than the body I think you're probably on the right lines going for a higher quality 'used' body than a new, base level one.

Not done much photographic lately, just tested a couple of lenses I've 'acquired'...

...they seem to work okay.

And I cobbled together a quick n' dirty generic portfolio type site HERE (http://digitalcg.co.uk) - it's little more than a holding page or point of presence, but feedback/suggestions are welcome.

Cracking site! You just inspired me to go do some urban photography... when i get chance.

I think i'll ring the camera shop today and ask for some info on the 20D, like shutter count and such, see how good a deal it really is. About lenses being more important, i agree they are but its annoying when there usually more expensive than the camera

The thing to remember about lenses is they dont get old like a camera. In 5-6 years time the camera will be outdated the lens wont. It might have a newer slightly quicker version out but it will still be usable. They also hold their resale value quite well, especially L spec glass.

Your right mole, but i still cant afford them in the first place :p

I can see that your images are immensly sharp yet mine arnt because of the lens im using (mainly the canon kit lens, doh!), that picture i have just posted above seems totally unsharp compared to most of your images.

Im really getting into this now, i need that 20D

I will only enter one of these in the competition if their are no good sunsets between now and comp close, as I know these are no-where near good enough.

Mole: Your photographs are stunning. I have no doubt you have won this competition already. You certainly have my vote - great work you have done.

Mole, im pretty sure its not got much to do with luck ;) Im still begging for a good sky at some point in the next few days but im not counting on it. But either way, i know my photos wont turn out half as good as yours even with a super amazing dramatic sunset ect ect. Good luck.

Just over a year ago I was asked by a couple of friends if I'd do their wedding pictures - as a paying job! I did a bit of reading around on the matter, became completely overwhelmed and tried to convince them there were far better options around. People shots are simply not my thing.

The bride-to-be was ace, saying that there was a short list of family groups/formals she wanted burning onto CD and the rest of the time I was free to do as I pleased, whether that was socialising, taking candids, chasing bridesmaids, whatever. It put my mind at rest and I agreed.

Fast forward 12 months and, on top of the family group shots, I had enough material to 'storyboard' the day from first coffee to first dance. This is currently being printed on 16" square canvas to be delivered as a bonus along with their photo CD...

It looks like HDR to me, dont ask me what it is or how to do it because i have no idea :p its to do with tonal ranges in the photo i think.

That one one picture is the combination of 15 different shutter clicks :o Not as much work as it sounds, honest!

I took 5x underexposed shots, 5x overexposed shots and 5 'correctly' exposed shots, combining each group on the fly in-camera (unique to Pentax K10/K20 series?) to result in three images of different exposure, then combined those in editing software to give a tonemapped HDR image.

The surf was up and the sea was crowded with surfers, this technique smoothed the sea right out and eliminated all people except the static fishermen at the end of the pier.

I had a headache before I read all that, now imagine how my head feels!

Thanks for the explanation though, guess I'll have to do some reading about tone mapping and hdr and all that jazz.

Do you think you could send me the full size version? I'd like to see the fishermen and whatnot up close.

The first image looks like a cracking location. Love the lighting, especially on the hair.

Hope you don't mind a few suggestions....
Try cropping it so that Hanna's head is not dead square in the middle of the image. Had she been looking straight to the camera I feel it would have been a stronger image. Keep wondering what she is looking at. Be careful too with arms and hands. We are taught to read from left to right and from top to bottom....her arms tend to draw the viewer away from her face to the bottom of the image.

The second image and the "tree"!
I'd crop the image above the elbows as the posing of the hands are a bit distracting. Have you tried this in Black and white or Sepia?
A wee touch of flash or a bit of light reflected back into Hanna's face would brighten her eyes.

I know it's far easier to critisise that it is to take the shot in the first place. There is nothing "wrong" with your portraits and I'm sure the both of you are really pleased with the results :)

Hans_Andersson
08-10-2008, 10:04 PM
None has really given me any kind of critisism on these pictures, a shame really.

The light was manufactured by me using some building lights through a huge screen made of a wood frame and old bedsheets. Take what you have.

I cant agree with you anymore on these shots, to many mistakes were made. But (i know its and excuse...but..whatev..) it was my first time really planning a shot and the light.
I didnt have a reflector at the time and just got it and i hate it that i didnt get one before the shoot.

Heres another version of one of the shots, but i dont really like it as much, the fact that her arms are cut off is way to disctracting to me.

Anyway, ill post more of these pics.

Those are some supahr pictures. Altought i kind of feel that the elephant the the rhino is kind of tightly cropped.

Lovely
