I never got a chance to go to the Star Wars exhibition but somebody wearing a storm trooper outfit did walk past me while I was there.

I love that shot of the bullet and the rose!

I dont do photography as a living although it is something I would very much like to do at some point, I have sold a few pictures for various uses and won some photocomps. I've only been really 'into' photography for about a 18 months or so when I purchased my dSLR.

Cheers, mole. That was a lucky one earlier this week, just weighing up the unusual curb/cobbles when that young fella plonked himself down and started reading.

Looking at your selection you seem to have a deft touch when it comes to PP, something I'm a complete buffoon with :( Any pointers (books/sites etc) or is it all hands-on learning?

Cheers, mole. That was a lucky one earlier this week, just weighing up the unusual curb/cobbles when that young fella plonked himself down and started reading.

Looking at your selection you seem to have a deft touch when it comes to PP, something I'm a complete buffoon with :( Any pointers (books/sites etc) or is it all hands-on learning?

Most of my PP techniques I basically learnt from just playing around in photoshop a lot. I read alot of the articles on sites like www.luminous-landscape.com too things like how to create contrast masks local contrast enhancement and things like that. I also shoot in nothing but RAW and have done for about the last year.

My usual workflow would be the following:
Import RAW file into Photoshop,
Crop, set white balance, knock exposure down to -0.5 or -1, bump shadow contrast and brightness up to expose the image correctly and import into photoshop as a 16bit image.

A touch of Unsharp mask (usually 10-20%, 60px radius, 0 threshold)
Any colour correction I feel is needed with Hue/Saturation/Lightness (or convert to B&W using Calculations/Chanel Mixer)

Smart Sharpen full sized image (usually 150-300%, 0.3px radius, 0 threshold)
Save 16bit TIFF.

resize down to 800x533

Smart Sharpen to make up for the loss in sharpness from the resize (usually 100%, 0.3, 0)
convert to 8bit, convert to sRGB save as jpeg qual 8~9

Sorry if its a bit sprawling but I dont have a set work flow and some images go through a lot more processing depending on the subject, The London Eye shot had some perspective correction work to stop the building and the Eye look like its 'leaning back' (converging verticles)

Wow, comprehensive, cheers mole! Appreciate the effort you spent on that post. Have been reading around and basically doing lots of trial and error adjustments until it looks okay, learning as I go. Then again, on my dodgy monitor what looks fine here could look poo elsewhere :eh?: Will give some of your tips a whirl, including the local contrast enhancement step.

Again, there's some really cracking stuff going up on here. Who'd have thought we all do more than play with toy cars ;)

@Telboy - you don't have to go far to take some pictures, it's how you look at the things around you.

Whilst in Monaco and Nice it's a bit easier:

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa41/perapi/poncy/fontveille.jpg

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa41/perapi/poncy/nice.jpg

You can also try to make something out of the mundane stuff at the end of the street:

Pete, they are ACE. I'm not surprised you've been mag featured.

Woah woah woah, crossed wires here? Not quite there yet (unless you know something I don't!) but hopefully it's in the pipeline. Ta for the comments though.

Like the sailing stuff, very genteel. Keep meaning to go watch the beginners' windsurfing class near me for some potential comedy shots.

Nice sailing shots!

I was supposed to get out and either photograph or crew in the yeoman class at my local club today but it ended up being too windy so we didnt get to do either, its a pitty because the high winds and fairly good sunlight would of produced some fantastic shots :(

Here's a yoeman shot I took at a regatta last year.

I basically take lots of photos and stitch them together in a panoramic, to give me the viewpoint of about a 10mm f1.8 lens. Most of the pictures are made up from 100-150 individual photos.

Autopano pro, It seems to be the best for doing that type of shot its not that slow either. I have tried other programs but they struggled with very large panos.

I like that funfair shot, its just a pitty that the board is clipping the frame.

What conversion method did you use for your black and white?

P_B
18-09-2007, 07:07 AM
Yeah, shame about that board. It was a tad blustery and I wasn't using a tripod so always a risk, should have had a more thorough look at the LCD. Just happy to have an acceptably sharp shot and not be blown into Morecambe Bay, really!

As for b+w, I've tried loads of methods but always struggled to get the result I want. For now I'm experimenting with the Virtual Photographer (http://www.optikvervelabs.com/) plugin. Mostly it's a bit gimmicky, though the b+w seems quite good once you tweak the default settings.

mole2k
18-09-2007, 02:10 PM
I generally use calculations or channel mixer for my b&w's.

Hello everyone. I'm new to the Oople forums and I thought I would introduce myself. My name is John Cary and at one point I was a photo student and decided to go a different route. Though in the mean time I do shot quite a bit of R/C Stuff along with night photography as well. Recently I did some work for R/C Car Action in the form of shooting both studio and action for some up coming reviews in the magazine. The two cars are the new Team Associated B44 and the Kyosho Lazer SP. Let me know what you think and I will be posting stuff as often as I can.

Thanks,
John

Caryphotography.....

Wow dude those pictures are awesome, what kind of camera are you using? The colours are so rich and well balanced too! Do you photoshop them much or are they mostly all just good camera work?

Your pics dont look over-saturated like a lot of "photographers". (a.k.a people that take average pics and photoshop the shit out of them later!)

Awesome job, they look great, very professional looking!

nice photos cary, like the night strobed stuff lots! :)

DF03, I think I take the most over saturated photos ever - but that's what I like. It's a camera setup thing rather than photoshop. Check out the photos from the Worlds I took with my D200, awesomely saturated! :)
If you look around the net, you'll see a lot of grey images from the event - not mine. Not to everyones taste maybe but I do it to appeal to myself and hopefully some others will like it also. :)

Some great shots there john, I like the night stuff they are nice and unusual.

Im quite the opposite to jimmy my camera's setup to undersaturate to give even more dull pictures with higher contrast, but that again is my preference. Some people prefer high saturation some people prefer low. With my rally shots I often have a little bit more saturation than my usual shots as it helps the cars stand out a bit more but my most peoples standards they are still undersaturated.

likewise I don't like too much contrast in my photos, mainly because it doesn't tend to go well with the bright colours & things can get a little too intense.

You can see my preference for bright warm colours all over this site, even the orangey-yellow borders on the forum.

mole2k
09-01-2008, 01:37 PM
Yeah If i did this forum skin it probably would be muted colours with high contrast :P

High saturation and high contrast can be messy, low saturation and low contrast can be very grey and dull looking i find.

Those look quite good turbo_brick, the first I would of shot with the composition showing more of the bridge in the background. to get a bit of a more balanced composition, a bit of light on the front of the car would of been nice too. A quick and dirty way of doing this is get a torch and during the exposure shine it over the darker area's of the car to try and paint them brighter.

Thanks for the comments guys. I try an use photoshop as little as possible. I had teachers at photo school that drilled it into me that photos should be shot correctly the 1st time rather then using photoshop as your main source of operation.
The Flash shots were done with my studio lights and a Nikon SB-26 as a slave as a back ground filler.
I'm a big fan of color in images but Mole2k, those rally shots just above are awesome. I really like that undersaturated color look with high contrast.

Yeah I personally much prefer that last shot :)

The car is nicely balanced by the bridge in the background halo'ing it, I personally would prefer a lower angle but a lot of people prefer to see more of the car like in your shot. Great shot though :)

The best bit is it's one of mine and i didn't have to buy it just talked my mam into it.

I get to drive it while she works away in iraq for 10 months of the year. Only downside is the fuel bills, when i was out taking the pictures I used £20 worth of optimax in the grand sum of 45 miles.

Wow. I thought I had it bad... I get only get 19miles per gallon on premium (probably the same as "optimax"?), but I don't have to pay ridiculously high gas prices... If my math is correct that's only around £4.5 for me to go 45 miles. You get to go a lot faster than me, though, and I'd gladly pay the extra money to go that fast :D

mole2k

Its quite easy once you get used to it, you basically pan along with the car. Just start to track the car and follow it then hit the shutter button while still tracking the car. Then with the right shutter speed the background will look motion blurred but the car is sharp.

http://www.northernracer.com/RAC 080.jpg

I've never heard of any specific name for it but basically it happens because you are panning so close the angle of the car changes a lot over the length of the shutter duration the only bit that changes the least is the bit that you are tracking as its in the center. It can be used to great effect, if you want to stop it and get the whole car sharp you basically have to use a higher shutter speed or else change so the car will remain at a more constant angle to you during the exposure.

uhmm, shutter speed and frame rate don't really matter, the shutter lag is apparently good on that camera - which is important.
Not sure how noise-free the images are - but the focusing won't be blisteringly fast, but that's what pre-focusing is for :)

is it worth it,its got to be than my fujifilm a800? basically from your experience is it capable (if i try)to take similar photos to yours?:) thankyou

You will be able to get very good results with that, especially on a nice sunny day. With care they will be 90% as good as anyting you can get no matter how much you spend.

Good photos are not about the hardware, they are about how you use it.

The cheaper camera's often work fine when used with the middle territorys and you dont require rapid AF.

With good light, pre-focusing on spots and a bit of practice you should be able to take very good shots with that camera. Expensive digital slr's dont particularily take better pictures they just make the process of taking photos easier, untill you get to the extremes of the scale, low light performance, needing fast AF, etc.

no, that camera is certainly crap. I used a Fuji before I got a DSLR and it was good - but the fuji you listed is a world better. like has been said don't expect too much indoors - we all hate taking photos indoors. ;)

I assume they were taken with a compact camera, if so they they are not too bad at all.

Fuji?

If you get a Fuji S9500 and spend some time setting it up properly you'll get much better stuff - ;)

Marty, I started last year with a Fuji s9600. It was ok outdoors, but indoors you just could even get near a decent set-up. You just had to use the best set-up you could get and just hope you got some nice pics out of it.

These were taken with the Fuji -http://www.telsshells.com/ne_regionals_-_durham.htm

Like I say it was ok outside.

I had it for about 4 month and then got a Canon 400D...much, much better, especially indoors. I just need to get a zoom lens for it now....cheap.

The good thing with the fuji was the movie capture mode. That was quite impressive for a stills camera. I did this with the movie mode http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=gFqPAZ0yhMo

Id love a DSLR, i have the fuji S6500 and do alot of indoor racing photography and feel that i could benifit from a 400D or what ever (cough*5D*cough) but i cant eve afford that for christmas or birthdays even if i didnt need certain racing gear more.

Marty: first thing you want for that is a 58mm UV filter to protect the lense, only about £12 and it'll protect the fixed lense from scratches, piece of mind.

Mole, that first one with the picnic bench seems choc full of colour and contrast - have you been playing with HDR? Nice place to have just a couple of minutes away!

Typically, the first decent weekend of the year and I get sod all* photography done whilst Jimmy and Stu are only at a bleedin' rally. Invite next time please chaps!

All those last shots are HDR to some degree, A fair few of the rallys shots have been hdr'd too. I would use it very subtly on quite a lot of shots of mine as a way of generally boosting the contrast. I quite often put the original colours back on a hdr that i've done but keep the contrast changes, or if im feeling like some ultra colours I use 'soft light' instead of 'colour' on the layers.

I was a bit annoyed at it being cloudy so I missed the lunar eclipse.

Here's one I shot the last time although I only had a 200mm lens then so I was quite looking forward to trying out the 300 with the 2x tele.

Are all those lines on the moon tyre tracks from the Lunar Rover? Oh hang on, that would mean someone actually went to the moon which is just silly. I mean, there is no KFC there so why would anyone want to go! Was the Lunar (MG) Rover brushless :)?

telboy

Man, those moon shots are ace!

I got some similar to the first pic at the last lunar eclipse, but, like you say it was cloudy this time.

I must get a nice zoom.

What tele converter do you use?
Do you use a tripod for the moon shots? or just free hand.

mole2k
13-03-2008, 12:10 AM
I use a Kenko something or other, it basically is optically the same as the kenko pro verson but doesnt report itself to the body so the camera wont shutdown autofocus af f8.

I usually would use a tripod although that last moon shot was my 300mm f4L with the 2x teleconverter resting on the windowsill.
