View Full Version : Cougar transmission issue

Three times now, my cougar has stopped mid race. When the marshall brings it to me the transmission feels very tight. and the applying throttle does not allow the wheels to turn. However after some manipulation of the rear wheels it suddenly frees up and is driveable again.
Has anyone else experienced this?
I will strip it down this weekend and see if I can find anything. Of course it may not be cougar related, it might be a motor problem?

You dont think it could maybe a bearing in the motor getting ready to quit ??
Id think if it was a gear box issue it would be all the time , sounds like maybe the motor ............. bit weird though

its probably the retaining pins in the lay shaft.

I argee it sounds like the same problems i had , caused by the orings failing to retain the pins in the layshaft gear

Moth, BigRed and Slowbob you are correct. One o-ring was in pieces and one pin has made a mess of each and every tooth in the transmission. Parts ordered from Microtech and they are not cheap :(
Not very happy because this was built to the manual. Is the 'fix' to cyanoacrylate the pins in place and the o-ring?
On a separate note, my gear casings do fit rather well but either a stepped joint and/or another screw towards the rear of the casing to better hold the parts together is required in my opinion. The way the B4 casing is designed provides some pointers.
I do love the way the car drives though. Just hope I dont get these problems at EPR (assuming I get my parts by then).

Put some shoegoo on the pin before putting it in. It will keep it from moving and not make a potentially huge mess like CA might well do.

This happened to me too, rang schuey and they sent out replacement parts FOC. Used loctite retaining compound on the pins on the new set. Pins stayed in for me then.

The pins in the kit measure 1.50mm x 9.75mm. I wonder if these roll pins will do the trick:

Neil,
Im sure if you thread lock the standard ones in and pay good attention to the manual when you build bud it will be fine. Put a good amount of thread lock on them and dont worry about getting it on the white teeth as it wipes off easily if your quick!
It will be fine im sure. Dont go buying from ebay or anyone else just put the originals back in and make sure you build it properly!
Carl above has helped us fellas on the team out with building etc and as far as i know weve not had any problems since.....?
If its anything other than the pins then im not sure as in motor problems etc

After reading the above again it sounds like its a sensor wire from motor to speedo!
I change mine and check reguarly as they do tend to wear out where they enter the clip either end if you change motor alot it could be this.
The above doesnt point at any problem with the car its self sounds more like radio gear glitch or wire

It is the pin coming out that caused the problem, no doubt now.
I agree that roll pins might not be strong enough. I will be using threadlock unless Schumacher come up with another factory fix.

the 1.5mm pin seems like a loose fit, and the oring seems too big in diameter and too thin.
your best solution is to use a shaved down 1.7mm pin, and fit a smaller diameter and thicker oring. The pin should be a tight fit so it shouldnt move around. Personally I have not had a problem yet with the pin falling out, since I race stock.
Bad manufacturing or outsourcing on schumachers part. Seems like the cougar was engineered by students.
