Due to the sad news that the ProLine Dirt Arena is closing, RRCi has decided to move the Short Course Summer shootout to the Coventry Model Car Club’s outdoor Dirt Track on the 24th and 25th of July.
Open Practice will start at 10am on the Saturday, with full on shoulder to shoulder racing from 8am on the Sunday!

Space for camping, a BBQ and ‘other entertainment’ will be available for those travelling to the event, and for further information and to pre-book click here (http://cmcc.phpbbhosts.co.uk/viewforum.php?f=5&sid=5f351488f65e5638dea076cd46ad0f43), or see the August issue of RRCi (out the first week in July!)

This is designed to be a fun event and a chance for all UK fans of Short Course to meet, race and push the class forward. We can then hopefully run a regular series in 2011 across the UK. Every major release of 2WD and 4WD Short Course Truck will be there, alongside the RRCi contributor team, manufacturer and distributor support, a track-side shop (and a few familiar faces from within the industry joining in the racing!)

SC related Prizes and trophies will be presented to the winners, as well as a charity raffle to give everyone the opportunity to walk away with a SC goodie of some sort!

See you there, to get down and dirty!

What are the rules?

graveltrap
05-06-2010, 08:26 AM
To have some fun!! ;)

The meeting is open to all electric SC Trucks, 2WD or 4WD, Stock and modified. The only limitations are:

True SC wheels and tyres must be used
SC Bodyshells only*
6 Cell NimH or 2Cell LiPo

*Extreme mutilation of shells to alleviate 'parachuting' will not be allowed, though 'trimming' and 'minimal' body mods will be! (you were warned!)

No motor limit applies (as most SC fans know, power does really corrupt!).

Saturday: Practice from 9AM, Free overnight camping, and one of CMCC's famous BBQ's

Sunday: 8.00AM booking in, 8.30AM for drivers briefing, racing commences from 9AM

Jay you have a shiny new shell that you can use!! ;) :p

I'm not sure TBH, it's something the Pete mentioned when I was at the track on Friday, I do agree we need a little more clarification on the matter so I will forward the question to the RRCI crew!

I know we won't want to stop anyone from racing this is about having a giggle as much as anything else! :woot:

Where can I find an entry form?

As far as I'm aware it's going to be booking in on the day.

We will fit number of heats and finals to the number of entrants, we are looking at 6 minute heats and multi legged extended finals (8 to 10 minutes) but this will be down to drivers on the day.

Not really sure what you want wezzer, club website is www.cmcc-online.com (http://www.cmcc-online.com) and contains details of the location.

Track is open for Short Course based shenanigans on Saturday for a bit of fun and the racing business happens on the Sunday

As previously mentioned, booking in is on the day, so I have no idea on numbers, Mad Pete (RRCi) may have a bit more info...I'll try and get hold of him when I get a mo.

Hoping to try a new track layout on the Dirt this weekend, not much has changed, just enough to make it interesting ;)

Or PM me the details and I'll make sure they are added to the thread on the CMCC forum and guaranteed a race place. I really don't think there will be any issues with numbers (are there actually 120 people racing SCT in the UK?), but you never know.

Now to rebuild my SC10...

I really fancy this, but skint and my SC10 has only ever been a fun toy, so i would need new rear tyres... :(
Might pop down for a look though.

18-07-2010, 10:49 AM
Bring the truck with you, I've got a set of rears (bowties) that you can try...

Track layout is done, it's a little tighter in places than it used to be, but flows just as well :)

Will there be anyone selling sc10 spares/tyres there? I wanna come but the likelyhood of me lasting 2 whole days without breaking summit is slim-to-none, and my entire spares collection consists of one wishbone :(

Also would sc10 kit tyres be any good? Ive never driven this track.

Fanks guys.

Hi guys, yes rubbing is allowed, knocking someone into the next field isn't! May even run a yellow and red card system :p

As for prizes, theres a SC8, Traxxas VXL/10th, Loads of Short Course Traxxas clothing, Wheels and tyres from HPI, JConcepts goodies, and whatever Wezza brings from CML!

+ Radshape have hand made us three very cool trophies and are in attendance, these guy's make the chassis for the Morgan Aero 8 so you can imagine how good the trophies are!

Mark is aiming on getting the gates open from 9ish onwards tomorrow for practice, anyone camping can get set up and a BBQ n Beer session is booked for later on Sat :)

This truck rocks, it mixes everything I love about RC, realism and performance...

Greets.

I would just like to add my thanks to the RRCi team and the CMCC crew who organised and hosted a ground breaking meeting for Short Course Trucks in the UK

I havn`t heard so much laughter at a big meeting for ages, the friendly atmosphere really made for a top weekend.
The racing couldn`t of been any closer, with "rubbing" or "light contact" being aloud, indeed encouraged :woot: after all, these are not open wheel racers which require serious precision driving.
SCT`s are fitted with both front and rear bumpers too, meaning the wheels don`t hook up when you get cars together[the benefits of closed wheel racing] and bumpers alow slight nudging without causing any damage, which can help with lapping back markers who refuse to move offline ;)

We found the CMCC track really fun to drive with it`s many different levels, jumps, mixed surfaces and flowing corners etc etc,i really struggled with the jumps, but i was definately not alone on that one

Constructive critisism would be that the even at a disadvantage the Slashes should not of been segregated into thier own class, all the 2WD SCT`s should of been run in the same class together regardless of manufacturer.Due to the small numbers of 4x4 SCT`s,i agree an "outlaw class" should be run,to include everything else, even Dez with his noisy/smelly/unreliable nitro thingy, untill such time as they have sufficiant numbers to make thier own full heats. :p Dez :)
A subsidised control tyre would also be a great leveler with any profits from the chosen tyre manufacturer going to charity would be a great help and encourage new and seasoned racers into taking part, without the fear of massive escalating costs due to tyre wars.

Finally for now,YES we would definately be up for another meeting very soon and finishing off with a big thanks to those manufacturers who sponsored the RRCi SC Shootout and all the drivers/helpers and supporters who attended, you made it a very memorable meeting, may there be many others in the future.

BR,
Simon F

Thanks for all the positive comments guys!

The next one will as suggest throw all the trucks in one big melting pot to slug it out...

The control tyre thing would be good if we can get the support of a manufacturer or four... (you listening out there in RC land?), this would work to level the playing field a little and share the grip out to so to speak!

Maybe we run 5 rounds over the next 12 months and use a different tyre for each to give all the companies who could offer a tyre an equal shot?

Maybe we run 5 rounds over the next 12 months and use a different tyre for each to give all the companies who could offer a tyre an equal shot?

2: Kourse King on the All weather
3: J Concepts on Dirt
4: HPI on Dirt

Got to say I'm not a fan of the control tyre. My reason. I watched talked and bought some tyre the fast lads were using now I instantly went quicker. And won both legs of the B. My tyres have very little wear and I reckon at least another full meeting. From them. If not two. Control tyre would mean I need to buy a set per round. Upping my costs. That would leave me out of this fun class.
I also used kit fronts so how would that work.

Hi Mark,

how about if it was just a pair of rears[for the 2WD class] at a special price for entrants? [subsidised by manufacturers]
The idea is to level the field and keep the cost down.
As a quite experianced racer in other classes,i was very shocked to see how many racers had bought lots and lots of different types of tyres already, that certainly would put off newbies and seasoned racers alike if they thought they HAD to buy all these compounds/tread patterns just to be competative.
There is no doubt SCT`s are a fun class, but if it gets too serious with tyre wars, that will kill it off like it has in many other new classes.
You have to remember,as soon as an interesting class of racing emerges, the manufactuers jump in with loads of hop up options to give drivers the edge and make themselves more money which not everyone has, this turns out to be detremental to the whole thing in the end.

IMO one of the reasons 1/10 offroad has worked really well for years because there is a fairly small amount of tyre choice, people tend to go with what they know works, when loads of manufacturers start vying[sp] for your hard earned,it confuses things and people tend to waste more money because of misinformation and hype.

These are just my opinions, feel free to put your own in and disagree with them if you like,it`s all good feedback for everyone involved or is thinking about these things.

cheers,
S.

I like the idea of a control tyre but it needs to be ready mounted to remove the multiple options of tyre inserts, and there's the rub not all use industry standard 12mm wheel hexes,so people will end up with a control tyre, but buy 4 sets with different inserts,so it becomes costlier than leaving tyres as free choice, providing on sale in this country.

Give it a few meetings and the best tyre will have emerged so a control tyre won't be needed

are we missing the point?
im sure im like more than 70% that entered in the fact that i did it for fun, not to win.
as i said kit tyres did not work well, i borrowed some goosebumps but they still felt odd, got some hpi attk tyres and fitted them and the kit inserts to some rear wheels, job done, to top it all i won a pair in the prize giving. i now know they work round there wit hthe set up on my truck. im more than happy to race again as i have them, the class needs miminal rules and if your going to spec control tyres, control inserts your creating rules that need policing, and rules take away the fun!

im happy with what i had on as im sure are many others, now if tony truman had proline XYZ on im not going to buy some just because i think it will make me beat him.........
the other problem is pick the wrong tyre because its the best deal and it does not work you have instantly killed the class

my personal view, it was spot on as it was. needs no more rules, just add dates.

i think the only reason so many people bought tyres on the day is the fact
no one really knew what worked, most that showed up still had the kit rubber fitted.
maybe a price limit to tyres would be better, any insert/wheel combo allowed?

we need a date for the next one:drool:

Series, yes please!! 4 from 5 rounds to count sounds about right to me at this point in time. Extended 2 legged finals of 7 or 8 minutes seemed to work pretty well ;)

Yes the slashes should be run with the other 2wd's in future!

4wd's should of course be run as a separate class, but there is a problem with numbers right now, I think there where just 3 or 4 out of the 40 entrants!

No to a control tyre, it's to limiting at this point in time especially with the various surfaces available for racing on in the UK.

More trophies! 1st, 2nd and 3rd for all finals would be good! A better pre-booking system would help here!

I'd leave the rules fairly simple, Tyres must be for a SCT maximum outer bead 2.2", maximum inner bead 3.0", 2 cell Lipo or 6 cell Nimh, and a full SC truck body shell that covers all 4 wheels.

Job done, massive fun on demand :)

Big thanks to all that made it happen. Great fun!

Was good to get some dirt track running in and enjoyed attacking Dez's SC8 with the B4!

Think the format worked well. Only tweak I would do is to put all 2wd SC's together and 4wd separate. No need for a control tyre as you don't get the grip with an SC to wear them out in one run.

The only thing i can see with a lot of trophy's is we'd have to pre book everyone and not take anyone on the day or only just a few so we knew numbers

Watching the B4 going round has given me some ideas ;) It seemed to cope pretty well on the track especially considering the worn state that it is in atm. It handled the doubles with ease :)

meeting was very cool,, so much fun!
i dont necessarily agree that we should run them on 8th tracks though ! i thought these are short course trucks not massive course truck lol
i thought the cov track was an ideal size for it ,not to big ( i think its a relatively small 8th track isn't it ? ) and plenty of laps! longer double legged finals are the future ( bumps ups would be ace too !! ) some tracks are just too big and with out shortening it would make the racing to far spread out and then the " close racing " that these trucks are designed for would be lost.

Country size was bang on. I thought that was a big rally x track.
Another thought then 15 car heats reedy style so every run is a race. And drivers swap heats each run so all race each other at one point.

Coventry is a small to medium 1/8 track, we have worked hard to get the lap times up for Rally x and truggy but on the other hand it's not to big for short course, i really enjoyed the day racing and running the meeting.

Hi all.
I'm a new member at Coventry but couldn't make it to the Short Course shootout, enjoyed reading the thread though.

I drive a B4 & have it relatively sorted for the astro with blue front springs, silver rear. Shuey yellow spikes rear, staggers on the front but I tested on the dirt track last night & it's all over the place, this was with dirt hawgs on the front & road hawgs on the rear.

I noticed on this thread someone ran a B4 at the weekend, any idea what tyres work on the dirt track.

I'm guessing I might need to loosen my slipper too & maybe softer springs ???

I'd probably suggest trying some Pro-Line Bow-Ties on the rear with a rib up front. I'm not 100% familiar with the surface of the Coventry "dirt" track, as to how rutted/stoney it gets, but the above would be a good starting point.

I was the one running the B4 at the weekend. Phil is spot on as I used Pro-Line Bow-Ties on the rear with Pro-Line ribs up front. M3 compound all round. The Bow-ties were great as I ran them on the SC10 too and actually had problems keeping the front end on the ground on the straight!
Set-up wise I would definitely ditch the blue springs on the dirt. I ran silver all round but green rears would be a tad easier to drive.
As for the rest of the setup check out the Turin/Collegno setups on the CML website as the Coventry dirt track is similar to how that track cut up.

Hi Chaps,

have been keeping an eye on this thread to guage interest in short course in UK.

We are willing to put an event on if you guys are interested in racing at our venue, really gutted we couldn't make it at the weekend but there are 9 of us racing regular short course and its rapidly growing.

We are A1 racing club, based alongside the A1 near Grantham in Lincolnshire,

We have an astroturf track with some paved and dirt sections for the short course to run on.

We have Strikes and SC10's running on kit tyres and they seem to work very well on the surfaces.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_7z1q0yxtU

the track has had some more sections put in since this vid.

I was thinking of putting an event on August bank holiday weekend for short course if we can get interest then it will happen.

Cheers, Mark.

Sounds good to me and its not far away!!! didn't know you were there!

That has been a problem that has been noticed so we are now trying to get word out and hold some big meetings to attract drivers and get some good use from the track.

Hi Reg, atm there are no rules with the short course class, we originally were going to run out of the box rtr for the indoor winter club meetings but since we all got cheapy Losi's and the motors etc have been dying its pretty much open.

We have been playing with brushless etc, with the grip on the astroturf the front of the trucks needs weighting to get steering!

We want to attract 1/10th buggies too so if you are interested in running buggies or short course then you are more than welcome... of course 1/8th carries on as usual with the regulars.

The sct's are so much fun that we are really keen to be involved and help the scene grow, as commented earlier we have noticed that the rostrum is alive with laughter as there is more body rubbing noise from the track!

I'm pushing for a seperate dirt track on our spare land for the sct's and 1/10th for dry weather so we can accomodate more racing.

Cheers for the comments chaps, i would love to put on a Short Course meeting and invite you all down to our track.

Mark.
