Heehee thanks and yeah, Masami was my hero of the time! I still remember the '87 Reedy World's!
I guess tracks may have been less technical then but I got on fine without one-ways. I briefly had the TopCat rear wishbones on too like one of the ProCat prototype but i found the extra wheelbase made it prone to grip roll, so I went back to stock.
Oh, and IIRC = if I remember correctly, ymmv = your mileage may vary. Sorry, habit!

What 2wd tyres could I use with the overdrive pulley? Mini-spikes or staggers?
Without fences, do you think the belt will wander off the side?

Love all the work on the Cat. Superb.
Got me thinking about giving my Bosscat a run :)
Could you give me a bit more info on the carbon steering parts and the bearings ?
If I got in touch with fibrelyte, would I be able to get a set ?
Cheers

Thanks for your post.
You can get the links from Fibre-Lyte. I had to use a 6mm drill to open up the holes slightly (0.1mm) to fit the bearings, which are 3x6x2.5 flanged.
I also used 3x4.5 shims for the crush tubes and spacers (see previous post)

That's a good question. BITD (back in the day ;)) the only real options were the Cougar/TopCat fronts, but I guess there are more now. It's probably no different than say snipping the outside row of spikes off regular 4WD spikes, just a bit less rubber and therefore lower rotating mass and less weight up front.
I've never had a problem with my belt wandering off to the side until I installed the MMS front diff, at which point the 'fences' chewed right through my belt.
With correct tensioning the belt shouldn't wander - or at least it didn't for me. I do remember however that the belt would always sit slightly off center at rest, but spin it up under load and it righted itself. I had one of the orange MMS belts I think.

Mine is also doiing that sitting at the side and when you rev up it moves to the center.
Btw the front tower/crashback should be easy to have them machined :woot:
The front arms of the touring version of the boss cat are they much different from the standard version. ???
u1000 do they fit the work arms ???

I'm thinking GT85 would be ideal for use on the old telescopic driveshafts and universal joints.
Does anyone have experience using this stuff?
Schumacher even have a link on the GT85 website http://www.gt85.co.uk/index.php

It's good stuff Luke.
Will make all plastics look like new, (apart from damage) and is a dry lubricant so might be ideal as you have suggested.
Avoid getting it on ball joints though, you don't want those popping off easily.

u1000 do they fit the work arms ???
mvh Isobarik
No, U1000 will not fit the works wishbones
The wishbone to hub design is different, so you cannot even fit works hubs to standard wishbones.
Hope this helps

The pulley fits between the gearbox housings but I haven't assembled it yet so I don't know if it will hit the belt covers.
I might use some 8mm shims between the washer carriers and bearings to push out the bearings and keep the pulley in the middle.
The belt part number is in the photo ;)

25-09-2011, 02:43 PM
No need to have it cut down, 6mm is a standard width.
I use the Schumacher high torque rear belts with the rounded tooth profile. SDPI only do the MXL belts with the trapezoidal teeth. I contacted Schumacher last week and they said they might restock the high torque belts.
The orange belt is polyurethane with polyester reinforcement. I also ordered a urethane belt with kevlar reinforcement, which is grey/green in colour. I found this information on the different types of tension members...
Polyester
Tensile Strength 160,000 lbs/in2
Elongation at break 14.0%
Modulus (approx.) 2,000,000 lbs/in2
One of the main advantages of polyester cord over higher tensile cords is the lower modulus of polyester, enabling the belt to rotate smoothly over small diameter pulleys. Also, the elastic properties of the material enable it to absorb shock and dampen vibration. In more and more equipment, stepping motors are being used. Polyester belts have proven far superior to fiberglass or Kevlar reinforced belts in these applications. High-speed applications with small pulleys are best served by polyester belts under low load.
Kevlar
Tensile Strength 400,000 lbs/in2
Elongation at break 2.5%
Modulus 18,000,000 lbs/in2
High tensile strength and low elongation make this material very suitable for timing belt applications. Kevlar has excellent shock resistance and high load capacity.

No problem buddy - it's from SDPi. I calculated that with the front overdrive pulley I could use a 320 tooth belt. It's polyester reinforced urethane which appears to be the same material as the old WASP/BRP belts. However, I have a feeling that kevlar reinforced might be better for the high loads and it has less stretch. Also the tooth profile seems better on the neoprene belts, which have 40 degree teeth compared to 60 degree for the urethane. I reckon the 40 degree tooth might be less prone to skipping.
I'll let you know how it works at the track!

I raced the Procat the last two Sundays at Stotfold and it's going well. I learned a few things yesterday that should make it better...
Change the front pistons from Tamiya No.2 to No.3 for less 'pack' and smoother bump handling. I'm using Losi oil now which I feel is better than the Schumacher oil. It's currently 35 in the front but it feels a bit dead with the No.2 piston.
Put some weight in to keep the front down. I had some before but for some reason I didn't put it back when I replaced the chassis. Thanks for the feedback yesterday from James and friends.
Change the polyester belt to a kevlar one, which has less stretch.
Time for some fresh tyres too. I hope JC Racing can make the new black dish wheels soon http://www.oople.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78457

Neil at RW Racing machined a new collar in aluminium for me. He did a great job: consistent diameter and a thin wall section so the belt is well "captured" by the flanges. You can also see the pulleys are sanded down to make them narrower.

I changed the nuts on the steering link so there is enough clearance for the new weights. I've also changed to Schumacher "pro" ball sockets, which have less slop and reduce the play in the steering, camber links and dampers. The clear Novak fan was missing some blades so I replaced it with a stronger one off eBay. You can also see I need to repair the capacitor wire. The final photo shows some detail of the chassis and Lipo trays.

Hi Henrik. The steering links are 5mm thick. Fibre-Lyte made them for me. The other stuff is available on eBay e.g. bearings, shims, nuts etc.
Good to hear from you, Stu. I hope to catch up with you at Stotfold over Christmas. I'm waiting for some dish wheels from JC Racing and will need to try them out with some fresh mini-spikes!

I have measured the pulleys and it will be a very very tight fit but possible.

You mean the alloy pulleys? Are you reducing the width and diameter of the flanges? Also, how have you solved the problem of fixing them to the shaft? SDPi make pulleys with a "Fairloc" locking hub but, unfortunately, it looks like it is not available in the 4mm bore size. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Luke
On the flanges i will take them down a little more then garcia did he took them down to 5/8 that should be with my callculations 16mm i was thinking of 15 or maybe 14.
I will take them down a bit more since the flanges are tilting abit outward and i want to keep them as narrow as possible.
On the side they dont need that much just so they are passing the pin on the slipper side maybe 1-1,x mm each and that should keep the collar to a minumum 6+mm.
I will keep them 10mm so i just get an bigger bearing instead and remove the shield in the bearing so I´m certain that it will not touch anything thats why i want to take the flanges down a littlebit more.
If one keep the screws to fasten it to the layshaft it will not have to be such as precise jobb.
The hexagon standoffs that you have between the red alloy for the crashback can you get more of those ????

The body I have is a repro of the original, made by Penguin Custom Bodyshells. TBG didn't have any bodies for sale when I was looking, but I see they're available now. I ordered a new wing from TBG yesterday.

Easily done, I update it from time to time so I just had to cut and paste.
I forgot to include the fences for the front overdrive pulley. Fibre-Lyte cut these from 0.5mm carbon fibre.

Also, last time I run the car in the wet I realised that the foam ball joint protectors don't help - they just soak up the water and hold it close to the metal joint encouraging rusting. I suppose they would be more useful in dusty, but dry, conditions.

Fibre-Lyte can make the carbon fibre steering links (post No. 224 http://www.oople.com/forums/showpost.php?p=545973&postcount=224) but I can't remember the thickness i.e. 5mm or 6mm? I can check later. They should have the drawings on file but I can email them to you if you want.
You can use the flanges from the 2wd if you sand them down and superglue them on. That's what I did before I got the overdrive pulley and c.f. fences (post No. 278 http://www.oople.com/forums/showpost.php?p=557034&postcount=278)
Keep us posted!

For some reason I've got 6x10x12mm written down in my notes but I've no idea who told me this or if it's even accurate. I can go see if I have one in my box and put the verniers across it if you want?
Yes, 6x10x12 is correct.

I found some hybrid ceramic bearings to fit the rear Works axles.
These are 8x12x3.5 flanged from BOCA, kit no. #YCWK128F-2YS NB2

On the original CAT/XLS it was necessary to cut a hole in the body to clear the end of the upper shaft on which the spur gear mounted. The spur tended to 'trim' the body shell too if you didn't do it before hand...

If using the new slipper axle the inner slipper disc neeads to modify to 5 mm the outer slipper disc is fine since the slipper axle using 1/8 for the axial bearing.

QuackingPlums

I used to replace mine regularly as a failed one-way is a sure way to lose the A-final, and I learned that the hard way!
If I remember correctly, just undo the countersunk screw at the fat end and the whole assembly just falls apart. There's a metal collar/insert on the bit of the driveshaft that slides into the rollers and it's a good idea to clean that to ensure the rollers have a good grip (grit is the worst enemy!) but other than that I can't remember doing anything special.

It's the next Winter Series at Stotfold this Sunday! I hope it's going to be dry and mild. If not, I hope the new sealant works...
I used some silicone sealant to make the undertray more waterproof. It fills the gaps really well but doesn't adhere to the foam tape strongly so it can be peeled off when needed.

The rear camber links are rubbing on the rims. You can see it circled in red in this photo...
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m134/kaszal/IMG_1214edited3.jpg
I reckon that's not helping the handling or diff action. Must be the Works hub carriers combined with the JC Racing wheels.
I was thinking of either sanding down the cups, which will weaken them, or look for a low profile ball stud or rose joint?

Hi Mick. I should have said that's an old photo. I was using Lunsford Punisher ball ends but now use the ones you mentioned - the black pro-ball sockets from Schumacher. The problem's not as bad but is still there... there are some small wear marks on the ball joints.

If you're using the latest black pro ball joints from the Mi4 - then they have extra webbing around the outside - so will be quite a bit wider. Compare them to grey ones - fairly sure it was grey ones that were fitted when the works rear end was current.

I had to sand down the spur side bearing housing to stop it rubbing on the slipper plate. I used some 8mm and 4mm shims in the layshaft assembly to reduce play. The bottom 2 photos show the RW Racing machined collar previously installed and the 6mm belt from SDPi.

I was thinking of moving the front wishbone spacers as shown below. Did anyone do this with their Cat back in the day? It will increase the caster, which I understand gives more straight line stability but less cornering. It also moves the front axles forward and up slightly. I wonder will this be beneficial e.g. less likely to catch on the track surface?

I got these M2 nylon spacers from tbwfastners on eBay and cut/sanded them down to about 3.3mm long. The wishbone moves freely with little slop. I wonder how the suspension and handling will be affected.
I've used drill blanks for the hinge pins by the way. These are readily available and stronger...

The 6mm belt seems less likely to skip so I'm going to try running it slightly looser. I'll use 1.3mm spacers instead of 1.5mm. This should free up the transmission a little and reduce wear. I can always put the 1.5mm spacers back if it starts slipping.

It was easier to just swap the lower wishbones from side to side to change caster. It could help on really low grip surfaces.

The wishbones are currently installed the same way round as in the manual (below) so, with the new spacers, the caster must be at a maximum. Did you reduce the caster to get more grip round the corners? In what part of the corner/power on/off would more caster increase steering? Thanks.

I always ran it with the wishbones the other way round (minimum caster) as it helped turn in. More caster meant it understeered less in fast turns when there was little grip, but was a pain the rest of the time as the car didn't rant to turn in (and could struggle on tight turns).
I did tend to set the back end up fairly loose though and reduced the steering rate at the transmitter.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably leave the spacer in and swap round the wishbones. This should give a little less camber than the kit setting. Without the front one-way driveshafts, I could do with a little more steering.

I've posted the following on your thread...
Are you able to compare the Schumacher rear springs you're using with some modern ones? With trial and error you could probably estimate the spring rates to within 0.5 lb/in. Also, if you squeeze two springs together end-to-end you can see which one compresses more and is therefore less stiff. I reckon my front F6 springs (kit standard I believe) are about 4.5 lb/in.

Or do you mean the little self-tap screws that attach the 3 pieces? The manual says No.2 x 1/2 self tap. I think Modelfixings.com has them: are MF-ST01/10 the right ones?
The bolts above are for the rear suspension brackets...

Luke nope the screws that actually holds the drumdiff together well 2mm is fine just my screw that where a bit on the short side, moved to longer but should have been 2-3 mm longer then it would have been better.
Maybe i should have used 2.5 but i just took what i had in the box.

Thanks luke
Just have to get the diff balls as well 3 mm i have those but not as many
as i need.
Diff washers shall be easy to get since they are stock here in sweden.
The alu pulleys are almost the same in size as the plastic dito so shall not be a problem to fit those either.

Found the selftapping ones in my box they came with the 2wd pulley to fasten the sides on the pulley so i used them.

For each Works hub you need two pieces of 8x12x3.5mm flanged. I've used a bearing inner race as a crush tube (http://www.oople.com/forums/showpost.php?p=526035&postcount=152) and a 12mm shim to get the correct spacing.

The front overdrive pulley uses two 1/4 x 3/8 x 1/8" bearings.
It's the same as the centre bearing in the Bosscat Pro-diff.

No problem
Which way round do you put your rear drive shafts? The Procat and Bosscat manuals are different.
Is one way better at preventing dirt getting in?

Feels like the bosscat version shoud be the more correct one ie the dirt cant actually fall into the driveshaft but then again the cars now a days dont touch as much dirt as they used to do.

FWIW when I used to look at the back of my cars at the end of a race, most of the mud would collect nearer the end by the axle rather than by the diff. Given that the incline of the drive shaft is negligible, I always considered it better to have the 'join' nearer the diff.
Also, when my wheel got knocked off completely, it was better that the 'male' end of the driveshaft came away with the wheel, as there was less chance of dirt or a stone getting rammed into it and preventing me from pushing it back in.
But maybe that's just me...

With the Shotgun hubs and short camber links the rear feels looser and slides out more easily. Less roll too, even without the anti roll bar. I've only tried it in tarmac while breaking in some tires but I'll have to wait to see how it is on bumpy astroturf. I'm going to adjust the droop slightly (+1mm rear, -1mm front) and thicken up the front oil (32.5wt)
Any comments welcome as usual ;)

Are you running the same camber on the rear now? I thought you had a comparison picture up (before and after the hub change) but cant find it. The rear would be looser if you are running less camber.
I've not had chance to check out my spring yet, its on my to do list. I dont have much else to compare to though unfortunately.
