Vintage people helpski!

I started some work on the Optima mid I have ready for the vintage season last night. Stripped the original mech speedo out and put an electronic speedo in, all looking good, though that original Acoms receiver with the flying wores really is HUGE isn’t it? ;)

Anyway I have two questions; I need some 2.2inch wheels what fit the kyosho hex (will Lazer wheels fit?, any have any they don’t want?) as we run yellow mini spikes. Next I need to know the ratio of the optima mid gearbox, anyone have a chart? Next what to gear a 19t motor on, I have a Peak Dynasty I think to use (laydown brush thing) if that makes a difference? So then lastly the gears are something unusual aren’t they? If so when I know what ratio to run Ill be on the scrounge for a pinion to suit. It has a Parma K stock in it now which is VERY slow indeed, though the pinion is quite large.

Oh, All this is assuming the mid belt setup should be OK to run a modern 19t? It seems very free with no belt skip at all which is good, gear diffs not so good!

I have a load of random vintage kyosho stuff, ex optima mid and er optima pro. Used to be two full cars years ago, but now just a random bunch of bits. If you find your missing anything, give me a shout and I'll have a route through. Isn't it 32dp pinions - really chunky ones?

I seem to remember the spur & pinions were something called .6 neither 32 or 48 DP. That was a while ago that I last had one mind !

Yeah it's .6 module style gears on a Mid. (i think) Back in the day you used to be able to get 48dp spurs from RW racing.

I might have some 2.2" wheels in my Kyosho junk box. I'll have a look tomorrow night (tonight involves a 4 hours of travelling for a club meeting)

As for gear ratio's, I found this in Jimmy collection of Manuals. In the bottom right corner of the page it has a ratio chart, but doesn't mention the spur size. If anyone can tell you the standard spur, then you can work out the internal ratio. Hey presto.

Here's an english version of that page

http://mcs86.free.fr/mag/img/kyosho_optima_mid_137/P_page_018.jpg[/URL]

also, here the parts page which shows the spurs gear. If it's a drawing of the actual part, then the spurs it s 48tooth part.

http://mcs86.free.fr/mag/img/kyosho_optima_mid_137/P_page_026.jpg (http://mcs86.free.fr/mag/img/kyosho_turbo_optima_mid_140/P_page_018.jpg)

So... internal ratio works out as 4.07 : 1

Not sure that looks right, but it does have small diffs........ :o :eh?:

19 turn! !!!! :D If we are running 19 turns at the york vintage meetings I think I will give them a miss - I would rather go backwards from last year to the silver can mabuchi 540. that allows more cars to compete on an equal level - 19 turn rules out anything crap. :eh?:

Phil, you're a legend!

Jimmy, I know what you mean but it was a bit slow, well for those of us not running Li-po anyway!

Oh and Medders I'm still slightly hesitant over running this as have 0 spares. If you find anything in whatever condition you don't want, I would very much appreciate it to keep her running through the winter, even an old shell as the current one is a minter and as I've borrowed it I'd like to give it back in similair condition.

Does anything think 15 year old servos will be OK with 7.2V shoved through them as they are rediculous at 6.0V.

I ran the same servo (std acoms) 7.2v'd for about 2 years back in the day. But maybe time won't have faired them well, we'll soon find out anyway!

Dan,
Lazer wheels will fit (Lazer ZX-R anyhow, don't know if the most recent lazer wheels will fit).
You can find out the gearbox ratio very simply actually (using a similiar method to rollout on 12th/Foam Tyres).

Mark a point on the spur gear at the top, and on the top of the rear wheel. Have a mate (or your dad) watch the rear wheel, and roll the car forward, until the rear wheel has completed 1 turn, while at the same time, watching the spur gear to see how many rotations their are compared to 1 turn of the rear wheel. It is very rough guide, but from memory it should be around 2.4 or something similiar. The gearbox ratio should be between 2 and 3 to 1 anyway, so if its not, then you have done something wrong.

Dan,

if your running on carpet the gear diffs will be perfect for that environment. Heck I never ran a ball diff indoors as the gear diffs worked better. Just use vaseline in the gear diff, and use a lot. Just make sure you set the slipper correctly, if it has one.

Also the pivot blocks are plastic (I guess on the inside) so may break if you do go to fast into something, but its a pretty good strong car.

Servo, do as i did and just connnect the standard servo red wire to the power lead and its quick, and it should be ok if you dont crash much. Use the crappy servo saver that kyosho use, if you have one. Otherwise pm me your address (as i have forgotten it) and will post you one, as i believe one is lying around here somewhere.

Standard Kyosho ZX5 wheels fit (as they are the same item number for the ZXR) as well and you can buy them in yellow.

.6 is the dp and the ratios with the standard spur gear is below, but i would go with the 22 and see if its in need of going up or down from there

Pinion on left

15 = 13.04
16 = 12.22
17 = 11.50
18 = 10.87
19 = 10.29
20 = 9.78
21 = 9.31
22 = 8.89
23 = 8.50
24 = 8.15
25 = 7.82

2.2 inch wheels are readily available from Kyosho, Tamiya, Academy, etc anything with a 12mm hex drive will fit.

It should handle a 19 turn no problem, we used to run 13-14 turns in them. The only problem is the idler gear which can wear rapidly, which is why the spur and idler gear is one of the few spares that aren't available any more.

Not much if anything breaks on Mids so you shouldn't worry too much about not having any spares. Wishbones are useful to have, but the later versions are much stronger than the earlier ones. Most of the spares are available to order from Kyosho, see here for the current list of available parts. The mid parts begin K.OT
http://www.tamiyaparts.co.uk/tamiyaparts/tpx/kyosho.htm

Bodies for both short and long wheelbase Mids are available from Kamtec.

If you want to stiffen up the gear diffs use Tamiya Anti-Wear grease, stays stuck to the gears.

Standard servos run fine on 7.2v, just be aware it supposedly shortens the life but I've never killed a standard servo directly connected to the battery.

Gears are 0.6 module and are readily available from RW Racing. Tamiya sells 0.6 module pinions as AV pinions and are also readily available.

Gear ratios as above, you don't need internal ratios as you can't change the spur gear, it only has a 4mm diameter hole in the middle.

When we used to race these cars, we used a small 4mm ID x 3/8 OD bushing to allow the use of Kimbrough 48dp spurs. At one stage Trinity even made a purple alloy bushing as an option.

The internal ratio is 2.64 from memory

I've just got hold of an rc10 diffs a bit crocked, can you get bits anywhere, The bloke gave me a procat and a complete topforce with electrics. Might need bodyshells for the tamiya and schumacher, odd things came with the cars. The rc10 has a new unpainted shell.

Will all be eligible for the york vintage stuff?:eh?:

Like I said on the other thread - I'd like to see us with enough entries to run two classes; one 19t, another 27t.

Keith,

What gearbox does the RC10 have? 6 gear or stealth? If your not sure take a picture of the gearbox, or tell us how many screws hold it to the chassis.

Bits are still available from the states mainly, or Ebay.

Get them raced! ;)

Keith that top force with retro electrics would get you uber respect.

Have we got a list of people wanting to race?

Hello

The topforce looks in really good nick, i need a 27meg transmitter to go with it, a visit to my friendly modelshop reqd to have a rummage in the back! not a euphamism, need em to check the spelling. I got the original manual with the topforce, unfortunately it's got schumacher shocks and springs on it. Will have a go and get them running soon.

Hi Dan!
Yes, I put Kyosho Lazer ZX-5 Disc Wheels on my Mid SE. Its the Standard Hex Hub from HPI and Tamiya. When I used to Race my mid back in the day I raced an 18 tooth pinion and a 81 tooth Robinson Racing Spur Gear. The only Problem with the Mid Series is the Plastic Idler Gear in the tranny box strips out so watch the possible failure! I hope you have some bearings in the Tranny shaft and the wheels. You will notice the difference.
Thank You!
