I'm currently looking into brushed and brushless systems to run in a Cyclone D4. But being a complete novice I'm not really sure what I should be looking at. I don't want to go overboard with the expense.

Any advice?

to start of with whats your budject? brusless is the only way to go really, there are no points in where brushed is better.

I was hoping to go no further than £100. Bearing in mind that I won't be racing, not at this point anyway. Really just for my own pleasure.

If I was to go brushless would this then mean I have to go down the route of LiPo's or could I still go with NiMH batteries?

you could still use nimh's with brushless

What would be a reasonable combo to go for?

When I first got my D4 I ran an Ezrun system (5.5t) (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/eZrun-RC-1-10-12-CAR-5-5-T-brushless-motor-60A-ESC-/110413155861?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN&hash=item19b5230e15) which I got off Ebay. It was pretty much perfect for the car - fits nicely under the shell, good turn of speed but not wildly uncontrollable.
It works best with Lipos, but can be used with NiMH's if thats what you have. You'll want pinions in the 18/1920 region, depends on tyres, terrain, batts etc as to which is best, so get all three!
Don't be worried about the buy over ebay and from Hong Kong bits - delivery is normally about a week, and failures on EZruns are incredibly rare.

if you already have nimh then it will work, but if you having to buy batterys just go lipo mate, once again lipo is better all over than nimh's and lipos are cheap as nimh are starting becoming harder to find now.

lipos are much better than nimh as they do get red hot , lipos get warm as well after running them . just need a good charger like a imax b6 for the lipo about £30 for the charger £25 plus for the lipo each pack

just so ya no the imax b6 on ebay are copys not the orginal ones, thou they prob work ok they may look the same but they are not propper imax chargers they use cheaper components inside the charger to cut the costs down. a propper imax b6 should be around the 60-70 price mark. and dont buy any cheaphk chargers without a fan built in as they like to over heat. its the same with everything, you pay for what you get bud

Thanks for the advice folks.

I don't have a battery pack at the moment but I'll probably go lipo as advised. I was just a bit put off with some of the scare stories about lipo.

you will be fine as long as you check your charger settings and dont conect it the wrong way wrong, many people seem to worry about lipos going bang, but forget about nimhs, i use to have many nimh pack fly across the room when they go off, you are safer with a lipo in a charging sack rather than a nimh on the side
