unknown to jon i am on this forum aswell, i just don't post often:p

that baja shell is mine and although i put it on the car i quickly too it off so i could place it on the wall.

the detail jon managed to get in from the pic i sent him (which is what this was based on) is much better than i imagined, even more so on the trees (they were a shock to the system.)

although this shell won't be used i am busy thinking of designs for a shell i won't mind so much on getting a few knocks on it.

with any luck i'll get one for the hyper 7 and slash 4x4 aswell.

can't praise jon skill enough everone, well worth the wait and money to get one, and i'm happy i did.

Are the wheels alloy or plastic? Will they chip if raced?

jonmiller
13-08-2010, 07:28 PM
cheerz dude. :)

he wanted the one from that new film..

theyre plastic wheels.

theyre cleared so should be fairly durable once fully cured but clear can take ahwile to fully cure so hopefully hell take care for now. :D

same with anything though, bikes helmets cars whatever, if somethin gets abused it bound to get ruffed up.

Hey Jon,
After my last 'mistake' I didn't want to ask if that was my shell again until I saw it in the flesh. It arrived today and I'm astounded! Absolutely love the skull detail and the retro yamaha effect on the side pods. Really chuffed with it, many thanks! will send ya' pics of it mounted in the Losi PSI if you like?

Superb help and style Jon, I'd recommend you to anyone.

Cheers,

Wow! Are those gonna be the Team MMUber shells for the Baja Endurance over in Holland? And what is the paint with the flecks in it? Will that fit through a normal airbrush?!

Jon, i've just been looking through this thread & i'm amazed at the sheer quality & complexity of your spray work... I like to think i'm ok at spraying R/C car shells but some of the stuff you are doing is blowing my mind... I just can't figure out how some of it is done or how you come up with them! :o

I've seen some shells that have been painted professionally... which are good but with a critical eye there's paint bleed & non-crisp lines - there's none of that with your designs... of which you certainly have a distinctive style!

Couple of Qs - do you use spray mask or do you generally use self-adhesive masks that you pre-cut before they are stuck on the shell... if you use liquid mask you must have a very steady hand! Also I see that the paints that you sell are solvant based - does that mean I can clean my airbrush/thin paint with cellulose? I've tried using waterbased paints in the past but with little success :eh?:

jonmiller
28-09-2010, 03:17 PM
Hey Dan,

First off, thank you for taking the time to read through my thread and post and glad you appreciate/like them.

I try to keep them as clean as possible but it's never 100% perfect. Occassionally you get tiny bleeds etc that can't be helped or might get missed. I think most painters get bleeds here and there sometimes but the decent ones will clean them up/correct them. Like said, sometimes you might miss one..it happens.

I use my RCS liquid mask ( ;) ;) haha ) most of the time. Sometimes i will use vinyl (example shell I did using paint masks in the howto section on my site), sometimes tape, sometimes some vinyl cut lettering etc. Just depends on the job in hand. Mostly liquid mask though. Props to some painters who only use vinyl cut designs. Getting it to sit around all the compound curves of a shell is a whole skill in itself!

I sell createx which is waterbased but yes, the RCS paints are solvent based so 2k/cell thinners etc to clean out yer brush, yup. RCS candies and special fx are available but aren't up on the site atm. Should have them up within the week hopefully. will be available in 1 & 2oz bottles. Liquid mask will be in 8 &16oz shortly aswell.

Regards,

Jon

Thanks for your reply... i've actually just found the 'How-to' section on your site... haha :D

Will have to get in touch soon for some paints (want to do a homage to Masami Hirosaka on a Yokomo shell)... so glad i've found a supplier too for the chrome - I had a bottle years ago & I used it on everything, but couldn't find anymore when I ran out.

Will have to try again at using the liquid mask - I did try using it on a shell I did recently - but I think that the stuff I was using had gone off

Me too Eric, I'm sending both my TBG Procat shell and my mate's DB01-R Baldre shell to RCS Graphic Worx. I've asked Jon for something retro this time... don't ask me to define retro... but Jon has something in mind... oh yes.

It's a pleasure to see every new shell he creates.

Jon,

remind me - what's the best thing to use to back your paint with? i.e. for scratch protection.

Just sprayed up another shell in Createx, but want to back it off correctly ready for some 'wear & tear'.

Was thinking a solvent based spray can (white) after the createx has been left for 48 hours?

Cheers

Andy
p.s. your shells are mint - something to aim for !! (in about another 50 shells time)

love the first truck Jon.

90% of the shells that get posted on Oople, I think "nice skills, too complex and fussy design though"

5%, I think "oooh no, no no no no no"

and 5%, I think "hmmmmm nice colours, nice job, nice simple and effective design".

Truck #1 fits the latter 5%.

Top job in every aspect.

Jon - what's your advice to doing 'trim lines' ?

Please don't tell me you just cut them by hand !!!

On my last shell I used a combination of liquid mask and stick on trim lines to build up my mask.... so the trim lines are bang parallel, which is nice. However, they have a tendancy to a) lift where they go across a fold in the shell, and b) leave a sticky residue behind when you lift them for spraying.

On one of my shells, I made what can only be described as a "shank" .... basically a lolly stick with 2 x scalpel blades taped firmly onto the end, allowing me to cut parallel trim line direct into the liquid mask.

Appreciate your thoughts, praying you don't just tell me it's skill... but I suspect that might be the answer coming my way !!

interesting.... I'm thinking of trying some of the masking tapes here : http://www.everythingairbrush.com/acatalog/Masking_Products.html

The Finespray Fine Line Green Tape, to be specific.

I like the idea (for both convenience & nice parallel lines) of using a masking line tape underneath the liquid mask.

I worked for me pretty well on my recent shell - only problem was the tacky residue when lifting the mask line.

For more complex work, e.g. edging flames etc, then cutting by hand is clearly the way to go.

jonmiller
17-11-2010, 11:16 PM
can't vouch for that tape as i haven't used it but yes, you must use a good quality tape

just thought i would say a quick word while i was here, i had a shell done by jon which i was overjoyed with, so i thought i would have some tops done as i was so happy with it, i emailed and he replied the same day. he has had a little trouble getting the vinyl (fussy f*****r me), but has let me know every step of the way. i cant recommend him highly enough, its this kind of service that will keep me coming back. cheers jon:thumbsup:

He accentuates every detail of the body styling so well that he sometimes ends up creating new styling lines that are not even there!...from a man who paints for a living Jon...I salute you sir!...brilliant work

Hey Jon,

I'm going to order some liquid mask and thought I'd extend my paint palette at the same time.
I know this is going to be an awkward question to answer, but how does your candy blue compare to the Testors/Pactra one? In terms of hue/shade and ease of use?
I have both red and blue Testors at the moment but they're a pain to flush out of my brush and they stink! have you used it on any of the pics you've posted so far?

Also, any plans on stocking airbrush cleaner? :p

Cheers,

Eric

jonmiller
21-12-2010, 08:31 AM
Hey Eric

Currently only have 1 x 8oz bottle of mask left in stock but will have some more in very soon!

My candies, I cannot say as I have not used pactra or testors. Here is a couple reviews of them http://www.oople.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59358
and others have said how good they are.
I really can't believe how less they smell compared to the spazstix ones.
Cleaning of them... I sell the thinners for them ;)
I don't personally have any shells I have done with them yet. I have only done testing to make sure they work...and boy do they work :D
I will be doing some color swatch shells soon.
Looking at making the RCS range of paints more complete by getting black/white and flourescents etc. Also, aerosols are in the pipeline.

If you are going to be wanting createx aswell, I am receiving a massive stock very soon as they are currently in customs. Every color in the range will be available.
4011 reducer will also be stocked now.

No airbrush cleaner at present. Just make sure you flush/back wash your brush and clean it out well and it should be fine. Do the same with thinners when using solvent paints and it should be fine.
Every now and then I'll strip my brushes down and soak in thinners and give a good cleaning out with a blow gun http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.cpstools.com/store/images/uploads/thumbs/thumb_5pc_blow_gun_kit.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.cpstools.com/store/index.php%3Fact%3DviewCat%26catId%3D3&usg=__ovdTSIaPWjOE4gBfu9qLK3KJqAk=&h=220&w=220&sz=6&hl=en&start=30&zoom=1&tbnid=crHemsqS7gyJtM:&tbnh=139&tbnw=168&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dblow%2Bgun%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3D N%26biw%3D1024%26bih%3D578%26tbs%3Disch:10%2C912&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=807&vpy=277&dur=739&hovh=176&hovw=176&tx=122&ty=99&ei=cWUQTbffMJTL4AaY5ryGAg&oei=Z2UQTdS0D46whQfb7aS5Dg&esq=3&page=3&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:9,s:30&biw=1024&bih=578
and have a good pick/clearing of the nozzle etc. Tinniest bit can affect the performance of a brush.

QuackingPlums
21-12-2010, 01:46 PM
Oo, I didn't see the thinners on the site! Will add that to my order too.

I am hoping to get a couple of the 16oz bottles of the liquid mask and will probably get a handful of other RCS paints too so I will wait for the new stock then if it's coming in soon!

Do I need reducer for the regular Createx paint? I'm sure someone told me I could just drop some water into it or did I misunderstand?

Cheers again for the advice - I've got myself some picks and brushes for cleaning out my brush already. Never occurred to me that I could use the compressor to blow out the brush during cleaning though so I'll be adding a blow gun to my armoury! Whilst I'm at it, is it worth getting a spray gun for applying mask in your opinion or just stick to a sponge/brush? If so, what should I look out for? I have several Baja 5B/T shells to do and they're BIG!

just got in there before me Eric.

yep, I need to update the site. all the rcs paints are available and so is the thinners. like said, mask is now back in stock. all createx paints and 4011 reducer are in customs and should be here soon hopefully.

water will work, yes but the 4011 is better. not just saying that to sell it to you, I think you'll find most will say that who use it.

QuackingPlums
22-12-2010, 06:15 PM
Ok, my order currently stands at two bottles of mask, a handful of RCS paints in 1oz/2oz sized bottles and some alu base. This is already over £50!

I'm gonna want both the thinners and the reducer as my brush is only 0.3mm (that may explain why I needed the higher pressure to get it through the nozzle?) and perhaps some of the Createx when it comes in - what's the best thing to do? Will you let us know through this thread when the site has been updated with the new stock so I can order it through that, or is there another way you'd prefer I got my order to you?

Cheers!

Quick question, I left my liquid mask I got from you in the garage over winter, do you think it will be ok ? Any easy way to see if it's gone funny ?

Cheers. Andy

jonmiller

Hey Andy

To be honest I couldn't tell you. I have never let my mask freeze before so cannot say how to tell or how it would effect performance.

Just use it and see. If worst comes to worst you can just peel it off and get some more. Let me know how you get on mate.
