Just read one of your replies in another thread re backing white with silver - genius ;
One of my biggest problems is I paint white first - then other colours can start coming through - I was wracking my brain trying to find a solution ;)

Genius, ha I think not  you can back it with a darker colour like black but it will instantly dull the white. Silver works and is like a reverse primer. You could use a light grey colour that would work too.

As i've drawn lots of window masks for various shells - and had people asking about getting hold of some cut vinyl - I thought i'd sort a set for the Durango V3 standard shell.

What you would get - is a cut down A4 Vinyl sheet, with obviously 2 of each mask shown, borders are all cut - so you apply the mask as one piece, then remove the borders to paint, then finally remove the inner window when you are done - much neater and easier than cutting them out yourself - or making a horrible mess with the supplied masks.

Front window also included !! I'll update the image ASAP ;)

(TIP - never use the ones that are a kind of yellow masking tape - they are useless !)

Anyway - just testing the water - £4.50 gets you a full set posted to your door.

If people are interested - i've done a few other shells too - C4.1 Bulldog - Standard 410 shell - 210 Standard shell - JC 210 cab forward etc - let me know and i'll sort that set next :)

As I seem to have a number of unpainted shells for my Durango 410 - I decided to paint my JC Finnisher shell.

As it's oOple 2012 very soon - and it's Jubilee year etc - Proud to be British and all that, I thought i'd paint it in an oOple / Team GB style.

Very happy with how this turned out - I really took my time and made masks for everything - there are masks for the inside of masks etc (you get the idea). About 2 solid days of work to design, cut / mask and paint it. There are NO STICKERS on the shell. It's all paint.

Painted with Solvent based paints and backed with clear Plasticote.

As i've a few more 410 shells for myself, I'm open to offers on this if anyone want's to purchase it for oOple 2012 :) If not - i'll be running it myself :)

PM me with your best offer - if interested.

Ace looking new shell for you. Really like that.

Could I ask, do you just lightly brush the inside of your shells with shoogoo? or do you do something else? I saw one of your shells as a meeting on friday, and noticed the thin coat inside to protect the paint. I was told it was shoogoo, and wondered if you did anything special or just brushed it on?
I'm doing a couple of new shells for myself, wanted to get them protected as best I could. thanks.

Neal.

I paint with solvent based paints - so you don't need to do anything to the inside really.

That said I've tried plasticote clear spray - and on my own shells I tape up the parts that will rub on the chassis with a kind of white gaffa tape. If you search eBay I think it's called 'glass' tape or 'cricket bat' tape.

Super strong and stops paint getting scratched off :)

Ran my 410 with the new shell today - and I tore a chunk off the side of it by crashing at the end if the straight and sliding the car on some concrete !!!

Bloody typical - spend all day painting it - and ruin it 1st time out.

Jon / Ian - you may be able to help here ?

I had a shell I painted for a Batley Member, with the paint backing the chrome coming away. The shell had being fine - but was run in very wet conditions, not sure this should have affected it though - any ideas why the paint backing the chrome had come away ?

I know chrome has little adhesion - and on the shells i've done recently i've not used it - I've just used regular silver instead as i'm fed up with problems with chrome :(

coleman758
15-07-2012, 08:31 PM
If I'm using chrome I normally scuff the shell up roughly where it going to be.
Normally with a Brillo Pad, it does really help.

But saying that, the silver pearl looks just as good for pinstripes etc..

Wouldnt that give you a brushed aluminum look? or at least a dulled look

when I use chrome which is hardly ever I put it on last and give it the lightest backing possible (Ive not backed before) but its been a long time since I used it).

coleman758
15-07-2012, 09:21 PM
It's not too bad, if you look very close it does have an almost brushed effect.
But you would have to be really looking for it,

Put it this way, it's never pealed off on me?

I always put the chrome down first, they cover with all the other colours?

jonmiller
15-07-2012, 09:23 PM
deffinately do not scuff the shell when using chrome! it will as said, provide a brushed or dull look..

wherever possible, try to do the chrome last or or the color before last depending on design.

i have no problems with chrome and can rip masking off around it. window trims with chrome, once dry/backed n sealed can again, be removed easily with lifting or need for scoring around cut lines.

i think the number one problem people have with chrome is backing it too heavily.

i need to do a vid showing it in use when i get a moment.

as for your troubles andy, what was the chrome backed with(type of paint, colour etc), was the shell sealed with anything or have any type of tape etc applied? was the shell cut out before or after painting?

andys
15-07-2012, 09:47 PM
Hi Jon.

Shell was painted using liquid mask
Shell was not cut out
I painted the chrome first - no problems with adhesion to shell
Other colours then painted, so chrome was under a couple of other colours - mainly black.
Final coat of paint to shell was all white.

Paints are Aerosol - Faskcolour (think that's how it's spelt)

No tape or backing (can't recall if I plasticoted it as this was before I started using plasticote)

The chrome hasn't come off - the paint 'backing' the chrome has come away.
It's like it hadn't adhered to the chrome - not had this happen before.

Shell was run is very, very wet conditions apparently.

jonmiller
15-07-2012, 10:17 PM
Can't be Faskolor if they were aerosol (spray can)
Chrome is supposed to be backed with a waterbased colour(normally black)
Perhaps the chrome wasn't allowed enough time to flash off before being backed and so solvents trying to escape created a reaction or lack of adhesion between that and the backing.
maybe when the shell was cut out after being painted, there was a gap createdbetween the shell n paint or one of the layers and allowed moisture to get in.
maybe the shell was used too soon after being painted?

hard to say really dude, there are so many variables when painting that it could be. also, throwing the amount of abuse these things get into the mix adds even more and as much as you try to avoid things, once in a blue moon freak things happen..
as you say, you have never had it happen before so hopefully it was just one of those freak things.

eyeayen
15-07-2012, 10:26 PM
Andy the shell you've done for yourself looks brilliant. Nice bold clear design.

Can't offer anything to this other chrome thing other than what Jon's said. I'd also side with him about the chrome being backed before the solvent had vented out of it, that will cause problems, then the slightest knock or moisture getting in and it all starts to come away. And also as already said back chrome with water based.

andys
16-07-2012, 07:19 AM
Cheers guys.
Paints are aerosol - 'Custom Colours' not Faskcolour - my mistake.
Chrome is again an aerosol 'custom colour'

I don't have any water based paints - I assume with the chrome I use it's I'm to back it with paints of the same brand ?

Cheers

Cheers Pig Dog :) That's very kind.

To be honest - i'm rarely entirely satisfied with any of my shells, as there's always a little bit here - and there that doesn't go quite right !

Also, yes the lines look clean, but when you are VERY close - they are not 'perfect' and ideally that's what i'd like :) That's what comes with working on a Mac I suppose, everything always looks perfect - and if it doesn't - there is always 'undo'

Also - i'm still using 'Custom Colour' rattle tins - just spraying the paint into the airbrush cup. I keep thinking that maybe the paints everyone else uses are better - flow nicer and generally sit on the shell nicer - I really need to try some other paints, but I have SO MANY, cans I need to use them all up !

These took BLOODY ages, I don't think i'll do small vinyl cut lettering again for a while, there is only so small you can go with the vinyl before it becomes silly fiddly. There's a lot to be said for simple - clean 2 colour paint jobs !!!

Anyway - I think they turned out a treat - hope you like them :)

Very very good Andy, you should be rightly chuffed with those. Look like they've come out of a factory.

Solvent shouldn't build as much as water based, you can always run a scalpel along the edge if you're super careful and neat with it before removing the mask. I know what you mean though with the not quite perfect thing. However, for what any of us are charging I think they're really good and as near perfect as you're gonna get for that money :)

Looking forward to seeing your next ones, your work keeps getting better and better !

Finally managed to get into the garage and had a quick practice to get back into it - on my own shell for an Xray XB4. Was a bit nervous about it to be honest, as I have not sprayed anything for ages. With lots of hair dryer action, and keeping the paints in the house so they could defrost I managed it.
All paint and no stickers as usual.
Hopefully should get the couple I have waiting for people done now as it's warmed up a bit outside :)

Ok - it was getting silly not being able to paint, and a devoted few have waited patiently...

So - thanks to RCS I am fully kitted out with gun & water based paints.

Have to say - water based are tricky - but I think they are in the end much better than the rattle can paint I was using. To think of how i've struggled before with solvent stuff..

Anyway.

1st finished for today - Bob's V3.

The iridescent green is bloody lovely...

No different really tells - water based seem to want to peel away with the mask a bit more - but Im just really careful !

I find the 1st few coats of paint with the water based need to be very light as the paint does not sit on the shell well if you put a lot down - kind of bubbles and the air from the gun blows it around !

So - I've had to go much lower on pressure and build up gradually.
Water based is much better though - cant believe how I struggled before using paint from rattle cans !!!

Ya have to agree with the first couple of coats, infact I just try to use loads of light layers or as you say it lifts or you have to trace with a scalpel, just thought it would be interesting to find the views of someone who has changed over paints.

As for silver ,Jon stocks auto air aluminium base, think that will be what you want.

Classy stuff fade king.

I just use Createx pearl silver . Although after backing, I find I need to give it a couple of hours or so before I start to lift the mask next to it, otherwise it lifts and I then begin the process of having a fit.

Hi Andy.

I was probably the only person using paint from rattle cans (spraying the paint into the airbrush cup) so I guess it's hard to compare.

Id say those initial coats with the solvent are better - and obviously I didnt need to thin them, but after that water based win hands down. The way the paint layers and build up is a much smoother finish, also jons white seems to be very solid and after a few good coats even darker colours behind don't show through. As I use vinyl masks mainly, I work with most of the shell unmasked to start with - to that end I have to paint light colours first, which is the opposite to what you'd do with liquid mask. Also I don't have the luxury of most of the shell being covered until its unmasked for painting, so I have to be careful.

Bottom line is - I won't be going back to cans.
Anyone want a shed load of rattle can paints ?

My cab forward 210 was my first water based paint shell - the fades on this are not good, and in general it didn't go well - this is when I was swearing a lot at the paints and learning how to use them. I even had to phone one of my painting pals to ask what the hell was going on !

One for Alan Lovell - he wanted this to be very easy to see and BRIGHT ! It's an FTW shell for a B4, bit of a weird shape to say the least.

And lastly, the ever so patient Jack Hirst and a V3 shell. I love these shells, such an ace shape and a joy to paint. Main design done using liquid mask and the details / window masks cut with vinyl. The iridescent paints are bloody lovely and change as the light hits them.
These water based paints are the future - loving them :)

Hi mate.

I've only backed with white so far, as the pearls / iridescent paints are kind of translucent, I thought black would be too much ! Will give it a go on the next one.

How thick / many coats are you putting on of the stuff like pearl / fluro / irri ?

Cheers.

To be fair, It depends on the colour.

Something like the Pearl Blue & Purple, I do 2 coats + 2 Backing coats.
the lighter colours I do 3, The pearls are great for shadows & fades.

The Fluro's I normally do 4-5 coats, with 2 white backing coats. That really makes them POP! (Yellow normally needs and extra coat.)

I always do light coats & dry them of between coats with a heat gun (Low temp)

the Irri's very similar to the pearl.
Although I tend to back them in black, I really do like the finish.
the colour change in the light its really good!

This shell has the Irri Purple at the back, Backed in black. You can see the colour change in the shadows.
They look good with the fluro's too, Good contrast.

I've really enjoyed doing these, the Green and Pink one for Bob is my fav of the recent batch.

I know Andy likes the designs that 'wrap around the shell' and the 210 one was a 'good-un' done the old skool way with liquid mask and a blade. Best bet is to use liquid mask and vinyl if I can, that's what I did with Jacks shell and it does look nice - based on his usual design - but better :)

Hi Chris

Cheers for the kind comments :)

The stuff I send to the cutter is from illustrator. It has to be vector based artwork for it to be able to process / cut the design.

Also - setting up a design to look good is not the same as setting up artwork to send to cut - it needs to be altered to ensure there are no duplicate or overlapping lines.

Painted it to sell - so had a bit of fun 'freestyling' with the blends and the result has come out a real treat. Loads of detail in this thing - take a look at the pictures :)

Painted in Pearl Blue, Flame Red with an Iridescent Red blend, Yellow, Orange and Silver pin stripes / windows.

Backed with black and sealed, just needs cutting and mounting :)

Cheers Ian.

As i'm using liquid mask a bit more - I bought a big spray gun to spray the liquid mask. So far it's a HUGE improvement over brushing it on as it's very consistent and flat. Sprayed a couple of shells up this morning and dried in the sun - you almost can't tell that i've liquid masked them :)

Should make it a lot easier to keep track of where I have and have not cut :)

Still using vinyl for the details, so a combination of both as / when i can :)

eyeayen
17-04-2013, 10:50 AM
My teeny little airbrush compressor can't keep up with a gun so I can't use one, sprayed it on with a large airbrush (0.8) and it went on okay.

What I did find though was it's coming off much easier, almost like it doesn't grip, to the extend it started to lift as I was painting with the air going against it, had shown no sign of this when I unmasked the shell. So for now I'll go back to brushing it on. If you work on a light box ( or in front of monitor with a white page full screen  ) you can see your cut lines in the latex.

I find the vinyl so hand because I can design in illustrator, I think using them both together is perfect though, it just takes a bit of planning !

andys

Hi Ian.

Thought you had a Bambi !?

My Bambi is awesome - it can really push out some pressure and with the car paint spray gun from e-bay (£10 :) ) it's great. Tried a test cut on the mask and it all looks good, I don't think there is any fear of it lifting. When I paint I use quite low pressures anyway.

And - cutting in front of a monitor - that's what I do - great minds and all that :)

eyeayen
18-04-2013, 12:15 PM
Hey Andy,

I've got a Jun-air compressor, same internals as a Bambi, silent, was ideal while at college using water colour and ink at about 10 maybe 20 psi max, now I'm spraying at 30 - 40 psi to get the paint through, sometimes higher the little 1 ltr reservoir struggles to keep up. It's fine painting as I'm constantly stopping to dry it with the heat gun, spraying latex wasn't so good though.

andys
18-04-2013, 01:09 PM
Hi Ian.

Ah - that rings a bell!

How often do you need to put oil in these things ? The Bambi has an oil level gauge but it's hard to know where it really is as the unit doesn't sit flat and the front legs are longer than the one on the rear. Sit it on the floor and the oil looks low, tip the whole thing forwards and the oil level is fine!

Was wondering if I should / need to top it up - do they use much oil?

Xray XB4 shell painted for Matt Tarbutt.

Matt wanted something in the style of Tom Sykes factory kawasaki 2013 world super bike.

I designed the shell on the Mac - and sent it to Matt before painting.

Original Super Bike design and my design worked up.

http://www.andrewshillito.com/oople/shells/matt0.jpg

And then the final thing.

I freehand airbrushed some fine silver into the roof rails and contours of the shell, to give it a more interesting look - as most of it would otherwise be black - worked a treat.

Spray gun is just from ebay - lots of sellers selling the same thing, was around £12, just search for a car spray gun - works a treat. Did you get a Bambi in the end - as you need to up the pressure a bit and thin it down a touch to get the best results - but it's worth it, goes on almost flat - so much easier to work with !!!!

Also - I needed an adapter as the fitting is different.

Hi loads of very nice shells

Can i ask what silver you used on the 44.2 shell in post #430 I really struggle with chrome lifting and want to use something a bit easier.
Also do you know what size nozzle your gun has for the liquid mask, and do you thin it if so what sort of ratio

Sorry for all the questions, any help greatly appreciated.

andys
23-05-2013, 08:45 AM
Cheers Dan.

Silver in post 430 is simply a pearl Createx silver. It's very, very translucent and I find a few nice thin coats, then backed with white or black depending if you want a light or darker silver. I stopped using chrome as it does lift - it's a bloody nightmare !

I bought some of Jon's (at RCS's) chrome (solvent based) but have not used it yet - i'm scared of chrome as i've had it lift too. Also other paint does not seem to adhere to the chrome.

With the standard pearl silver - it's fine - no such problems.

Big gun for the liquid mask is 0,5 - thinned very slightly, maybe 10 parts liquid mask to 1 part water. Sprays bloody lovely, but the pressure needs to be 40 - 50 psi on the compressor.

With the paints I spray around 20psi, sometimes a bit lowers for fine details.

I use one of Jon's airbrushes for most of the detail work and have a cheap gun at hand loaded with white and one with black normally to back other colours.

Jon's brush is around £95 but it sprays lovely, don't need to thin the Createx / Fascolour paints unless I want to and it sprays the pearls great too.

Cheers for the help Andy I have some of that pearl silver so that's good.

I'll have to get myself a gun for the mask, pressure is not a problem.
How many coats are you putting on?
when brushing it on by hand I do 1 thin coat to start then 2 slightly heavier ones which seems about right for me.

It's tricky with the mask - when you spray it - it goes on so flat it's hard to tell how thick it is ! I go for around 4 thin coats and then test the thickness on a part of the lexan that is not part of the shell. It's one of those where you get used to it and just know if there's enough on. I always find that too thin is a nightmare to get off so too thick is better !

Tricky One this - Pred X11. These shells have NO overspray film and there's a front & rear wing too as well as the shell not being symmetrical. Inspired by the KTM X-Bow colours - this one is for Leon Satchell.

Hey Andy, as another painter I know what goes into these, all of those last ones you've posted are stunning. Your graphic design ability really comes through to give you the look of your shells.

The Iron Man one is cracking, real nice details with the shading and brave of you to use white with red behind, it's come out perfectly though !

The black and turquoise one for James is so simple but incredibly striking.

And the Nike inspired one is stunning too.

Top work fella !!! Keep it up

Hi Ian.

Thanks buddy :)

The B4 Iron Man Shell was very tricky as there was lots of fine air brushing involved as I was trying to get a bit of shading and relief into the shapes. Sent me a bit crazy as one false move would spoil it - it's like russian roulette - but with an airbrush :)

The Durango 210 looks great in the flesh - much brighter than in the pictures.

You are getting better all the time Andy, despite all that time messing about with quad copters.!
That Nike shell is an absolute belter....

Everyone that was waiting should have their shells any time now - all were posted this week.
The shells going to Australia and Austria may take a bit longer.
Please post some piccies guys when you get them :)
