Depend on what esc you have, depend the power of the motor you can buy.

would a better ESC boost the power of my stock motor then ? or are they both rated to be used together ?

Both rated to be used together is a good way to put it, all brushed esc's have a maximum rate, this is sometimes shown as amps, but mostly as 'motor turns', its more complicated than this but, the lower the number of 'turns' the more grunt the motor will have (gearing will effect speed as well), your esc should/will have a limit, that may be 17turns (say?), so you cannot use a motor with less turns. An esc with a lower turn rating will cost more, of course you can buy a 'no limit' esc.

In a 2WD buggy a 12 turn motor is ample, you could push to 10 turn but (in touring car racing motors can get silly, 4turns etc). Some motors are better than others and brush life can be a problem, remember that a new brushed esc & motor may be not much cheaper than a brushless combo. Of course second hand brushed kit is cheap.
