View Full Version : On a mission

I'm on a mission. I've (happily - I love painting!!) agreed to do a couple of paint jobs for some pals.

The first one, I need to do for this Sunday :o. Ultimately, we're trying to achieve something like this on a B4.1 shell :

http://racepf.com/images/products/1521-30.jpg

Reasonably fiddly, but confident I can do a decent version, but only with the right materials, paint etc.

I've got an airbrush I've never used before !!!, a decent compressor, some paint in cans (from my mate, which he's used on previous shells), but crucially no liquid mask - which I reckon is essential to achieving a shell like this. Not used that before either !!!

Does anybody know anywhere in West Yorks that sells Createx / Faskolor or something similar OR can deliver uber-fast and has plenty of colours in stock?

I'm trying to figure out if it's realistic to aim to complete a shell like that for the weekend, or should I just do him a bog standard (but neat) job with some standard mask & the spray cans he's passed me, and save the "big one" for another day?

 Aye lad that is a tricky one. Might be worth just doing a neat bogo standard one just to get the lad up and running. have heard the guy in question is a bit throttle happy anyway,so save the nice one for when he calms down abit. Dint he wipe a cougar shell out at batley the other week and kept blaming a faulty lipo connection on his erratic driving.:lol:

thanks for the quick replies everybody !! Uber-helpful forum section this.

Jon (love your site btw - had a right good read of it!!) - any chance you can pm me the colours you reckon I'd need to try and match that shell, with prices, delivery etc ?

I could spray it with a can in a day, but working back from Sunday, I reckon Fri+Sat = curing time... Thurs = painting, Wed = liquid mask.

JUST about do able?? Don't want to rush and fudge.

jonmiller
04-10-2010, 09:32 PM
forgot to mention the liquid mask is available in 8oz bottles now also, incase you don't need a large bottle (again, not on the site but is in stock and available - waiting for some work to be done on the site)

all done - "fairly" happy with it given it's my first for 4 year.

Had a real issue with the Candy Green - it seemed to melt into the liquid mask, so when I was peeling it off, it was like I was peeling off a really thin Candy Green coloured mask.

live n learm!

now leaving it to dry fully before giving it a backing with a spray can white, then the window masks can come off ready for use on Sunday.

as for the green, perhaps you applied it too heavy?

Yeah looking good Andy :) with the candies, best to do them in several light coats & build them up gradually.

Hope you're enjoying doing them fella

AndyG
09-10-2010, 12:07 AM
OK, so I'm fairly satisfied with the results, and certainly, things have been learnt.

Lessons learnt...

The Candy Green - I put it on lightly, and in several coats (even though I wasn't spraying much of it) and it seemed to have a really significant impact on the liquid mask. Where the CG had touched the mask, I found myself peeling off a candy green, ultra thin, mask. This impact alot of areas of the shell and led to me having to re-cut some mask lines.... end result - imperfection, 2 hours extra on the job and cramp in my legs (I stood up for 6 hours doing it) whilst asleep. The CG was (apart from the chrome) the only solvent based paint I used in the scheme, which must have played a part. All said though - it's a lovely looking colour.

Black & White - Came out of my airbrush quicker than 'owt else. - and as a consequence I have some very minor bleeding.

Equipment - I have a £20 airbrush and a nice compressor. No regulator or filter & I suspect I need those things if I wish to spray regularly and well ? Do I need an airbrush that has the ability to spray fine lines?? ... I think so. Advice welcome.

Good stuff...

Chrome - Amazing stuff. So reflective and shiny. Awesome stuff.

Owner - He loves it. That's what really counts.

Liquid Mask - Apart from the issues with the CG described above - I love this stuff. How I masked shells with tape etc I will never know.

Questions...

Trim lines - If I want say a 3mm line around an area in chrome, how do people go about cutting it out? Just by hand? If so - some of the jobs I've seen on here astound me.... or maybe I should drink less?

blitzboy
09-10-2010, 07:49 AM
Hi Andy I don't use any filters or regulator and as for lines I always cut by hand the bleeding might be down to the paint mask not peeling right due to it not being thick enough and I always use a fresh blade on every shell too mate

Hi Andy.

Looks good fella, get some decent pics of it up !!
Have you done any of the other shells yet.... Post them up if you have :)

I used some candy paint on a shell and it went horribly wrong, was like spraying water, I threw the tin away so I don't make the mistake of using it again, it seemed to melt through the other paint and spoil my liquid mask too, si I know your pain !

Hiya Andy,

I would recomend you get a moisture trap, tends to build up & ultimately the water will come out through the gun with the paint.

Trim lines mate - Practice really fella, and a steady hand!!

Check out the bling wing.

Can't decide whether to do the window trims. Not sure I'm keen on it personally.

AndyG

I thought you'd only back it with white :-S

Number of errors per shell is going down, as I gain a tad more experience each time.

Could do with some decent stickers though.

Limiting myself to black n white ones so they tie in nicely.

First time I've cut all the lines by hand rather than by using a trim tape underneath the liquid mask - I won't be going back either. Just takes a bit of courage.

Really please with the results, and credit to Mr Miller whose designs I used for a spot of influence.

Just dry it off well with the heat gun mate and then light coats of Plastikote with heat gun in between and you'll be fine, no need to leave it a couple of days.

eyeayen - what would you have done differently

Just the work flow. Pin Lines in chrome, backed that with black same time I did the Window frames, Blue - silver so there was no chance of contaminating it with the orange, Orange, White.

Nothing else just the order you sprayed the colours, and I don't think I'd have faded the orange and blue together. Maybe just let the blue fade out or put a pink in between as both would fade into pink well. OR blue into silver, silver into gold, gold into orange. That's me though and I'd have probably taken ages to do it where as it looks like you've done this in good time !

ok, latest one from me, for Mr Steve Kirk (aka DJ Kirky of oOple disco madness fame). Previewed on "Andy's £10,000 airbrush adventures" thread.

Been doing Steve Kirk's shells recently, and h'e just got himself a 210, and seen all the vinyl madness going on with our mutual friend Andy Shillito.

Andy has kindly provided some vinyl masks for me for this one, both to do the "proracing" logos, and the window masks (complete with outline).

My intention with this shell, very specifically, was to mix liquid mask and vinyl, to achieve the proracing logo, whilst still having the flowing lines right round the shell, which are best done in liquid mask.

To boot, I didn't want to be a chicken, and I wanted the blue / white transition to cut through the centre of the proracing lettering.

So here's some step by step pics :

Vinyl mask for the proracing logo applied. This can be considered to be in 3 parts : 1) the lettering 2) the outline, and 3) what I would refer to as the waste. The waste is key, as it gives you a 'reverse mask', and ultimately allows you to spray the black outline of the lettering first. Essential given the lettering is to be white, and the surrounding area is to be white.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7078/7374587298_26e8b6affc.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/68652553@N06/7374587298/)

Now, you add the liquid mask, and this is the one bit of the whole job which requires some patience. The LM needs to be carefully brushed up to the vinyl so it slightly overlaps onto the waste vinyl. I really took my time with the liquid mask on this shell, and now know how much that paid off. 4 decent layers, carefully applied.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8149/7374587990_56ff40c32a.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/68652553@N06/7374587990/)

And here's the shell fully masked, with the 'sweeping' transition lines drawn on the outside with a Sharpie pen.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7229/7189263643_94ff6d7fae.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/68652553@N06/7189263643/)

What I've done here is to use some 3mm trim tape on the outside, purely to act as a visual aid ready for when I cut the LM inside the shell. You can see that I've also removed the vinyl 'outline' mask ready to spray the black first.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8023/7374497628_aa10e4a49d.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/68652553@N06/7374497628/)

Missed a photo here, but I'm sure you can figure it out. The black's been sprayed for the lettering outline, and then the large areas of masking removed for the blue.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8165/7374498924_9d5caaa8d6.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/68652553@N06/7374498924/)

Sprayed the chrome line, then the red (backing the chrome at the same time), and find that the trime lines I put on the outside really paid off - I've got some nice parallel lines. Then the bit I love - you pull away the mask around the lettering and see the crisp results. I found that the LM and the vinyl stuck to each other nicely. I could start pulling the LM, and it would take the vinyl away with it, or vice versa.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8028/7374499764_307215b9a6.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/68652553@N06/7374499764/)

Add the white... simples. The remove the window masks, and add back in the smaller window masks (again, courtesy of Shilly) allowing me to paint the window surrounds.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7072/7189268969_4b4febdf00.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/68652553@N06/7189268969/)

and one from above...

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7224/7374502590_1fb3c8179d.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/68652553@N06/7374502590/)

And a similar deal with the wing. Used some frisk film to mask up the remaining wing area, so again I could spray the black first. Unfortunately, the frisk film left behind a nasty residue, so I had to clean it up with some WD40, and then some soapy water. Got away with it in the end, but it must have added 45 mins to the process.

Really? I didn't enjoy doing them, if I'm totally honest. Fiddly, mind bending, and not my cup of tea.... but thank you, anyway !

What's your take on all the vinyl madness Jon, as somebody who can do it without the use of tech?

Andy

jonmiller
15-06-2012, 09:35 PM
Doing it full time, I like to try to work smarter, not harder...so whatever method it takes to do that is best.

I tend to use the vinyl cutter for lettering only. I think some designs I do with liquid mask would be impossible for me to do with a vinyl cut design.

Also, I think you are able to be a bit more liberal with the paint when using liquid mask. Over doing it with paint on vinyl I find is easier to create an uncrisp edge.

As said, the main thing is to work smarter not harder....so whatever is needed to acheive that is the route I will try to take. :)

andys
15-06-2012, 09:47 PM
Jon

Some of your 'harder & smarters' are mixed up ;)

I totally agree though - vinyl is great if the design suits - and you have the time to do everything.

I still find liquid mask far easier and quicker - I'm just playing with my new toys ;)
