Is turpentine ok to clean new tyres and wheels before glueing or will it leave a residue?
Craig.

Why do you wanna clean em mate? if you do wanna make sure they are glued properly something like motor spray or lighter fluid would work better
Turps, no, it is an oil based solution, just squirt a little motorspray on a clean cloth and wipe.

The main thing that I have found with tyres and I have only been doing it this year is trimming the bead before glueing.

Im with Spencer, trimming no more than 2mm off the beaded edge makes them sit better. They will glue fine even if not cleaned.
But to guarantee this, no harm in cleaning stuff, something as simple as Fairy liquid and a good scrub will degrease everything very well, and you'll have Fairy soft skin too! :jimmeh

Will show you tomorrow how to trim you need to turn the tyre inside out.

We use alcohol to clean both beads and rims (where the bead goes) before gluing. Tires have got mold-release compound on them and this inhibits the glue bond. We do the rims to remove any greasy residue, but mostly just for drill.
In the U.S. you've got to look hard to find 90%+ alcohol. Most is 75%, and the remainder is water, which is just what you don't want.
Why use alcohol instead of motor spray? First, you can pack it in your airplane luggage -- no spray cans allowed. Second, it doesn't evaporate quite as fast, so can clean more and better. Third, it's far cheaper yet more effective for this purpose.
Why use alcohol instead of some type of soap? Cleans off what we want to get rid of, evaporates fast, and leaves no residue.
We also trim off a triangular piece from the inside of the bead. Trim the foam too.

In the UK all alcohol would be drunk!

Here in the U.S. we're quite puritanical about these things (Remember prohibition?) and we tax the heck out of the Demon Rum, so the alcohol you can buy at the drug store is "denatured". You'll get sick if you drink it, but it is cheap.

Can you use beer ?

There are many uses for beer. (Though not for the warm stuph you guys call "beer".) However, most uses involve putting the beer inside the driver rather than on the tires, which may be off topic.
Except if it's that warm stuph. That wants of chilling...
Notice that the X - 5 has large cooling vents... Everything in the U.S. is cool, except the chix, which are best kept hot.
But I digress...
