View Full Version : Full electric install
Hi Guys n Girls,
I’m about to be spending a lot of cash on getting myself back into the world of RC racing after some time away, (some time away is an understatement as when I left the sport 3300 had just come out and I don’t even think LiPo had been invented lol:eh?:)
I have decided to try my had at 1/10th 2wd off road for the 2011 season so it gives me around 3months to get my head around things once again
What I looking for it some advice on what’s the best to be competitive as I don’t what to be spending again in 6 months as I’m not competitive. so what do you recommend for a full electric install?
Speed controller
Servo
Moto
LiPos
And even radio gear as iv notice that the Ko ESPRIT3 has be discontinued acording to RC Disco web site

Hello great that you want to get back in the 2wd scene just as it is realy taking off again .
Speed controller = lrp sxx v2 tc spec or the top spec speed passion are good .
Servo = savox i think its the 1257 10kg 0.6 sec ti gears
Moto = speed passion or lrp x12 octo depending on funds also winds dependant on where you plan to race .
LiPos = this is a dificult one as the new 60 c batterys are just aroung the corner so might be worth waiting to see what manufacturers have to offer
radio gear = dx3r or dx3s depending on funds

Well I am going to disagree with almost everything that has been said above ... lol ... sure many will disagree with me but I will try to justify my statements as I go.
Radio :- what ever fits your hands best. I'm selling my Futaba 3VC as I find it a bit too chunky for my little mitts so have just bought an Esprit 3, some prefer the chunky feel of the Futaba, others like the halfway house of the Sanwa. All great radios. If you like wheels then the choice is massive and they all feel different so get hands on at a club before spending.
Go 2.4GHz though, I'm a ludite but glad to see the back of Xtals.
Speedo:- Hobby Wing / Speed Passion (basically the same units, even take the same software updates!). I have just had to change back to an LRP as a temporary measure whilst I wait for a repair (any speedo would have died, not the SP's fault) and it's like a binary switch compared to the Speed Passion.
I will be going to Hobby Wing units in the new year though.
Tekin is also worth considering if your sleeping with your bank manager as they are nice and smooth too.
Motor:- until Sunday I would have said Speed Passion all day long and they are a fantastic motor in terms of smoothness and drivability. I however would recomend you have a look at the latest Orion motors, very smooth and a little more sparkle than the SPs it seems. Not much in it, I'm only changing due to a failure related to the plugs on the SP motors and want to go back to hard wired and that makes Orion the hot ticket IMHO.
Don't go hotter than a 6.5 or cooler than an 8.5. I have found lower wind motors actually easier to drive as they have a little less torque so feel less punchy.
Servo:- Futaba is hard to beat, Power HD are a very good option and a fair bit cheaper. I've seen and heard of Savox units with centering issues, not sure how true that is but I've heard it a few times.
LiPos :- I was hoping to say try LiFe but I'm not sure of the homologation submission status so can't. No need for mega C rating or huge capacity in a 2wd, in fact I'd say you might find that current brushless + LiPo is hugely more agressive than what you were used to so you might want to down spec a little, say 4200 & 35C just to help calm the savage beast.
Now for the big one, the car.
There are so many options now, a great thing, but they all feel a little different so it is very wise to give them all a try, sure your local club members would offer you a go.
My order of perference is;
Kyosho RB5-SP2 ... awesome straight out of the box with build quality 2nd to none and strong as an ox (could be converted to mid motored later if you wanted to)
X factory X6 ... proven to be a good choice for most drivers wanting a mid motor car.
Ansmann X-pro .. easy to drive and cheap, look out for the new mid motored one soon.
I must say the TRF201 always looks good going around but I'd personally be put off by the lack of UK importer support, might not bother you though.
I'll stand back and wait for the flames .. .lol

No flames off me Roger! Sound advice there dude!
Also to add for the car Schumacher Cougar SV, quality bit of kit there!!
And to also confirm the hobbywing electric bit. I had a hobbywing xe-run system in a car last year and it is identical to a speed passion costing a lot more!! My beleif is they are made in the same factory so cannot understand the price difference!
Losi xcellorin systems are nice and smooth too and best of all cheap. and I do beleive they have sorted the reliability issues they once had!
thanks for the very sound advice, regarding the car i will take a look at the Kyosho but what do you guys think of the B4.1, i just have a bit of a soft spot for team associated due to me racing the TC3 for a number of years..:D

I ran AE stuff in 2wd more often than not since I started in the mid 80s and Tony Evdoka (to name just one example) ran AE for about 15 straight years.
Both running Kyosho now and loving it!
The B4.1 is a good car, no real duff choices out there to be honest. I always found teh B4 a little to skitish and pointy for my personal tastes.
The reason I prefer the Kyosho RB5 is that it seems the best of all worlds, stable but loads of initial steering. Huge traction, but no power on understeer. Always easy to drive but hugely responsive to setup changes. Strong as hell and reliable too (until I built up my Scorpion mid motor conversion I'd run the same car, including driveline components, since 2007 ... it was bought 2nd hand then).
As I say get a drive of them all, very different characters to many of the cars so some will suit some people better than others.
looking around on the net etc, i a little worried regarding spare parts for the Kyosho and X factory...

As the others have said ... plenty of spares support for both cars. JE Spares are amzingly good for Kyosho stocks, so far the only time I have had to wait was when I ordered something that wasn't on Kyosho UK's products list .... I think I may have been a bit keen :D
which Futaba servo are you using????

I have 9550s in both cars at the moment. Can't fault them at all. I MIGHT be running the Power HD servos next year though, futaba splines so easy to get horns for and very good specs for the money. Definietly going to get one for the touring car as I can't justify the price of another futaba for something I use once in a blue moon!
