There seems to be a lot of slop in my BJ's steering.. so much so that it occasionally snakes around when accelerating (especially in bumpy sections).

I have taken a short video clip to try and show what I mean about slop in the steering.

BJ4 Steering Slop Video (www.lbc.talktalk.net/BJ4_slop.wmv) or Alternative Video link (http://rapidshare.com/files/64189660/BJ4_slop.wmv.html)

Is this normal? If not, what should I do to fix the problem?

Thanks!

Looks to me like a lot of that is in the servo link and servo / horn.

If you pop the servo link off at the servo horn end and hold it still how much slop do you have?

Just built up my BJ4WE and it's steering set-up is totally slop free so doubt it's normal for slop in the system.

Re the video; that does look worse than normal, but you can see in the video the servo horn is moving quite a bit so it looks like most of it is the servo. Hold the servo horn still then try again ;)

A certain amount of slop is normal after a few meetings, doesn't make any difference though :p

Like Richard suggested, check the servo/servo horn. If they're tight, then go through the rack and rebuild it. Making sure to loctite every screw, with the proper amount of torque when tightening. Also, check the ballstuds, to make sure they havent loosened up a hair.

As suggested I re-checked the steering assembly and found most of the slop was being caused by a lot of play in the carbon steering rack.

I took it all to pieces and reassembled, but no improvement.

I then disassembled and filed about 1mm from the bottom of each steering bushing and reassembled as shown. There is now a massive improvement and nowhere near the amount of play there was. :D
