I'm sure many have seen this page already, but I wanted to post it just in case. The text is 99% japanese, but the pics are marvellous!!!

(pic from site)

Just bought a NIB baby like this, a Kyosho Progress 4WDS, which I had as a kid. It's grooby baby! :D

Must say some of the pics on this site are worthy of being called "oople'ish"!

I think that first pic is of a Boomerang, not an Egress btw.

I'm gonna hop up a rerelease Hotshot with modern tires and see how far behind it's laptime wise... We'll be running a retro-class in 2008 at every 1:10 OR Nats round next year, it's gonna be big fun!

Is that true???

What are the rules going to be?????

SHY

Haven't you guys heard of birth control? You are overpopulated! :D

We're normally 20 drivers saturday, the same on sunday... so we have LOTS of room for fun classes...

Rules will be:
-brushed motors, max. 19 turs
-not newer than 1990 models

Other than that do as you like, it's just for fun! We're thinking about giving extra points for vintage hairdo, clothing etc...

Move up north and you will be an A-driver! ;)

If any of you guys wanna fly to Norway and race with us you are most welcome!

Boomerang (first 1/10th car I ever owned) in the BAR colours at the front, left rear is a Mk1 Grasshopper MK2 (first 1/10th car I ever drove) in box art colours.

Then the EGRESS bodyshell in silver to the rear right hand side! Not sure what chassis it is on though ..... might be a madcap

I have always wanted an Egress!!!! I was due to have one as my 1991 season 4WD (to go with the Asute I was running in 2wd) to replace the Lazer ZX I had been running (after a string of Mid Optimas) but unfortunately my father passed away the day before it was due to arrive at Puma Racing. There was no way I was going to be able to race (my mother doesn't drive) and we couldn't afford it anyway so I had to ring up and cancel it. Since then I've always wanted one. Driven an Avante 2001 which handled similarly and found it to be one of the smoothest, easiest to drive cars I'd driven to that date.

Anybody got an Egress?????

The silver body at the back in the top photo is a Madcap one, mounted on an uprated Madcap.
This is what an Egress looks like.

The Grasshopper belongs to Grahoo and started life as a Grasshopper Mk1 but now has DT-02 suspension. Gearbox is a mix of TA05, TRF415 and WW2 parts.

Anybody got an Egress?????

Yeah, I had one back in the day, I made my first races with it. Very fast and smooth indeed, but crappy handling in the rough. A bit fragile and expensive too...
I sold it to buy a ProCat :p All epoxy, but a real race car. I wish I still had the lovely Egress though !

SHY, good to see you back ! How are you ? I have a few vintage cars myself : Hirobo Alien, Kyosho Turbo Optima Mid, Ultima Pro 2, RC10CE (runner), BossCat, YZ10W, Cat 98... And the postman is bringing me an Optima, my first car ! It was cheap as it comes without body, wheels or... screws :o

Salut mon ami! Mais c'est trés bien, e toi?

I never left actually... just been a bit quiet on the X-5 forum... that damn thing belt skips so much I had to park it for a while. It's just been under the knife at a friends workshop. So now it has Olivier style belt rollers all over! :D

If that doesen't work it will be parked for good on the shelf, waiting for it to become vintage...

I won't do the same mistake as I did as a kid and sell my babies... trying to complete my blood line of cars now. I'm missing the Wild Willy I, a Wild One (I'll get the Fast Attack in stead), and maybe a mint Supershot.

For vintage racing I'll get a rerelease Hotshot and Frog...

How are you doing? Any more victories?

I'm working in my home town for some days. Rounded up the old local RC guys for some retro beer drinking last nite, it was great! First time in 20 years!!! It seems like temting them with some vintage racing is the way to get them back! :D

For anyone who's looking for vintage >> www.ebay.com (http://www.ebay.com) -it's the place to find it!!!

seriously!!!!!

Still want an Egress ....For vintage stuff check out www.tamiyaclub.com (http://www.tamiyaclub.com), there's at least 3 Egresses for sale there in the subscriber trades section. Not a cheap car though and those ones all seem to be mint. There's also someone there who makes alloy versions of all the plastic parts that break.

Apart from there just keep checking ebay.

@Terry, nice collection you got there! *applause*

Was the Egress any good in it's time?

Back in 86 in polar bear land the Supershot was the car to own and race. But I guess that was just because we didn't know better... The TRF501-X in my opinion is the first 100% serious racing car Tamiya has ever made (I know Tamiya probably INTENDED previous cars to be that as well though)...

terry.sc

Terry, I never have worked out how the Tamiya club site works..... :eh?:

G
The site has both free and paying members. Free membership gives 5% discount off Tamiya spares, unfortunately only official parts so no 501X spares. Paying membership gives you a showroom to upload your own pictures and videos, a 10% discount on Tamiya spares(it used to include a 10% discount at Modelsport!) and a separate image hosting service. The site only started charging after it was costing the owner £200 a month in bandwidth fees. It's now so big it has had to buy it's own 2 dedicated servers to run on.

It used to be easier to get around, but it's so big now (22000 members, 45000 showroom entries!) it can be awkward to find anything at first. A search box on the front page would help. Go to 'search' in the 'members' menu at the top of the page, type in the name of a car and all examples on the site should pop up. To see what everyone is selling/wanting go to the 'subscriber trades' in the members section on the top menu. The 'reference' menu takes you to specific Tamiya cars or any other make - a pity the other makes aren't separated out by model, that's why it's easier just to search for specific cars. The 'vintage media' section in the 'reference' menu has various old reviews, adverts and videos, not just Tamiyas.

Blimey, I sound like a salesman:wtf:

BTW here's Jimmys old showroom on there
http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom.asp?id=17

And mine is the link below.

RogerM
29-10-2007, 08:55 PM
Thanks for the link ........ that's going to cost me a few quid!!!!!! LOL

As for racers from Tamiya the Egress could hold it's own with anything of it's day, if a little fragile. The Top Force Evo / Manta Ray very nearly became Uk national champ in Jamie Booth's hands. There where also a couple of Astutes that did the rounds at the top end of the RRCi stock championship back in the day .... I certainly went ok with mine.

I have yet to see a TRF501X in the flesh but it does look a great car, think it is the first Tamiya to make a Euro's A ... might be wrong, Jamie might have done that with the Manta Ray... .

Is Jamie Booth related to Phil Booth (legendary 1:8 TR racer)?

terry.sc
29-10-2007, 10:30 PM
The Egress was a good competitive chassis, the biggest reason it wasn't as popular is that it cost £270, compared with £175 for the Mid and £199 for the Cat, both proven race winners. High price means less people buy them, so less people to develop it on the track. Jamie Booth did okay with it but didn't start getting the big results until he switched to the Manta Ray.

terry.sc

For the Goodyear Eagle stickers look for the sticker sheet for the Tamiya Motorola Lola T94, virtually impossible to find though. Others similar to those are on all Tamiyas formula 1 sticker sheets.

The Speed Disc stickers on the first picture aren't available in white, but Tamiya included red versions of those with the Manta Ray. Those will be custom made, as will the BAR Honda sticker sheet. The only ones I know of are the F1 stickers from here http://www.formula1-rc.com/Default.aspx?tabid=110&ctl=CatalogItemDetails&mid=432&CatalogItemID=921&CatalogID=1
If they are available they will be a specialist sheet from Japan as you can't sell models with tobacco branding on them anywhere in the world.

I see the logo "Autographics" - could that be where he gets the sheets from? Do you know their website by any chance?

terry.sc
01-11-2007, 10:17 AM
Autographics have shut down. They used to be great for all those scale replica sponsor sticker sheets but as sponsors now see scale versions as a way of making extra money with licensing these days instead of free advertising like they used to, all the extra costs (and chances of getting sued) made it non profitable.

What they have left from their stock is on ebay
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/AutoGraphics-of-California
but most of the good ones went at least a year ago.

They used to make Goodyear stickers like Tanaka has used on those buggies, but those are long gone.

Guess where I got the paint scheme for my runner Optima:D

OTOH I'm putting together a HotShot now. I'm really excited to see what it can do with LiPo and some modern tires!

Some questions:
-it it possible to fit a one-way in the HotShot?
-ball diff in the rear in the HotShot?
-tip as to modifying the wheel axles as to fit modern rims (plus make wider)?
-where can I buy alu tubing to make side fenders/roll cages etc? (incl. bending tool)

-it it possible to fit a one-way in the HotShot? There were several third party versions which replaced the propshaft when the Hotshot was released, finding them might be difficult these days.

-ball diff in the rear in the HotShot?Thorp made a ball diff for the Hotshot, if you find one expect to pay between $60 - $120 for it.
-tip as to modifying the wheel axles as to fit modern rims (plus make wider)Take off the triangular drives, replace them with hex drives and fit your choice of Tamiya, Kyosho and Academy wheels straight on.

1) go to any model hobby shop, buy tubing2) fill with fine white sand, plug ends3) find object of appropriate curvature (can, rim, tit, ..) 4) bend (probably no need to even heat it)

Since it's mm it won't fit Losi or AE wheels of course... :(if you want to drill the wheels out to 5mm the rears might fit on without an adaptor, but I've never tried it to see if they would fit.

Most car and hop up manufacturers make 12mm hex drives, they are used on every current touring car and apart from Associated and Losi ones every hex drive will fit the 5mm Tamiya axles.

Ahhhh....yes! Who doesnt love the vintage buggies especially when there are classes for them to race in. Myself and a few others here in Australia have been getting behind the vintage bugguy scene and have managed to get a few race meetings together.Just recently I attended a 2 hour vintage buggy enduro. Not quite your standard enduro as there were 2 drivers per team which allowed for 1 or 2 cars per team.It was a little more like a 'tag team' event. It was an absolute hoot with cars being allowed needed to be from prior 1990 and the control motor being the Tamiya 'Sport Tuned' black sealed can motor. The event went off without a hitch and saw many of the old cars from the day turn out some healthy laps.I ran my Topcat while my team partner ran his JRX Pro.Both cars faired well with only human error getting in the way of things-he he. Antway here's some pics from the event-enjoy.

Really!!! So it's possible to fit a one-way into a Hotshot!!!???

One-way bearings you can buy in all kinds of shapes and sizes. What else do you need? The pulley itself? Any pics of this?

Btw. There's mentioned about the re-release hotshot that it has reduced bumpsteer (new front hubs)... can't be much om a reduction now can it? It's still A LOT!

terry.sc
11-02-2008, 08:31 AM
To fit one you need the Manta Ray torque splitter set (you need the adapters and hardened steel shaft) and follow the pictures of what he did on the link above to modify the Hotshot gears to fit the one way.

At the time of the Hotshot release there was a one way mounted in the propshaft available from SRM Racing, good luck trying to find one of them.

The rerelease Hotshot has the same amount of bump steer as the original, the new uprights give improved ackerman geometry to give you more steering. To get rid of most of the bump steer you need to Parma Bump Steer Eliminator kit.

Aha! So it's the Ackerman... that explains it :D I just read somones post about that... but I just didn't make sense as the bums steer is at least as bad as it used to be

What does the bump steer eliminator kit do? Raisen the ball stud (a LOT)? Any pics of it?

Should be ready to race soon if a big "Tamiya model shop" who's order I put in 3 weeks ago actually send me something ? I love to support model shops in the UK but is there any wonder why people just buy from Hong Kong !! It's a sad state of affairs when we can get something quicker when its 1000's of miles away as apposed to 70 miles away :(

Don't know, you'll have to check the link above and try and work it out yourself if he used any other gears, but that is the one way that is used.

What does the bump steer eliminator kit do? Raisen the ball stud (a LOT)? Any pics of it?It's just a pair of long ball joints to lower the steering linkages at the uprights.

Thx Terry!

It may seem like the Manta Ray one-way kit comes with a 16T gear, but the std. one in the Hotshot is 18T. The 16T has the necessary hex shape inside. He actually uses a file and makes himself a hex shape inside the 18T gear? Agree? Must be kinda hard to get that accurate enough... :D Could be worth a try of course!

Jamie did win the '91 national championship with this http://www.tamiyaclub.com/article.asp?id=64

Jamies Astute did finish 7th in the '90 Euros with a car like this one http://www.tamiyaclub.com/article.asp?id=94

Dont forget he also won the euros with it, and boy did it go like stink. That manta ray was a work of art in Jamies hands. I enjoyed the nationals back then.

You just have to take your time and measure carefully to make sure the hex is as centred as best you can.

I can try to ask Yaji some details on the next occasion. He's working thru most weekends though (poor guy) so I don't see him often.
I got his email too and could ask him to join in on the conversation here, but don't think he likes writing in english that much

Hey SHY, how's the modification going?
I met Yaji, and he said it was easy to do, but we got distracted before he could start to explain

I met him on a practise day and mine was the only vintage buggy at the track that day, but Yaji caught a couple nice pics of it.
I didn't get the original pics, so here 's the link:

A whole different event: vintage meeting at TonTon Land
I hope the admins will excuse me for the links outwards:

no need for excuses ;) I hope you'll do better than me at my first yatabe race last month. I finished 3rd with my ghostrider. But there were only 3 racers in the vintage class
That swedish event bettter have a few more people show up :D

Here's a couple pictures of the ghostrider in its new appearance:

with a new longer wheelbase, wider front and rear and improved front geometry. Lots of changes under the hood also and longer bigger volume shocks all around.

Next yatabe race is the first sunday of august... and finnair got a 500 euro promotion for flying to Japan : Nagoya or Osaka. Who wants to join?

The rerelease Hotshot has the same amount of bump steer as the original, the new uprights give improved ackerman geometry to give you more steering. To get rid of most of the bump steer you need to Parma Bump Steer Eliminator kit.

Does anyone have this? Can you describe it? take a picture? what is the kit, i can't find anything anywhere about it!

If you're looking for something from the old site

Glad to see Tanaka-san is getting more active in the hobby again. Last time I looked through his blog posts he seemed all into folding mini-bicycles ... boring!
