What consumables? (Grease, damper oil, diff oil etc?)

First post so a brief intro is in order I think....

Returning to rc cars after a very long layoff (let's put it this way - I remember the orignal Cat coming out ;) ) and trying to find my way around again - a lot has changed! I've been lurking on here for quite a while and finally took the plunge and registered just before xmas.

Great site Jimmy :thumbsup: (and all of you) - with heavy use of the search function I've been able to answer most of my questions but now I'm starting to get a couple of cars together (1/10th 4wd off road) I've got a few points where I'd appreciate some advice.... (please)

To kick things off, is there a general consensus as to which consumables are "best" ? I'm thinking here of things like ball diff grease, bearing grease, shock oil, diff oil (410R :wub) etc etc.

One I'm particularly interested in is threadlock - back in the day the Tamiya stuff used to be the dog's dangly's - it was about the only threadlock that was safe on plastic. Now I discover that you can't get it over here any more - is there a plastic safe alternative? For metal/metal threadlocking duty what stuff are you all using?

There isn't a great deal to choose between the different consumables, most brands do a fairly similar selection of things, there are only a handful of things that are unique to a certain brand.

Personally I have been using Much-More oils and greases for quite a while.

A quick tip on shock oil - stick to the same brand (same will go for diff oil). Not every brand measures the weights in the same way.

I'm surprised to hear that the Tamiya threadlock is no longer available in the UK! But I use a threadlock from a motor factors and it is fine. Just make sure you get a non-permanent one (usually blue), and apply sparingly so as not to bond the screws to any adjoining parts by mistake.

I was in the same boat as you last year, welcome back. It's so much easier now except that the cars are faster.

Regarding threadlock if you've bought a Durango the stuff that comes in the kit is superb. Stick with that as it were.

The Durango thread lock is good but dont use alot! Its bloody strong!

Decided to use associated damper oils seeing as they seem to get fairly consistenly good reviews (and I've got a couple of half bottles from a mate to try - got to keep the costs down where I can :D ).

Will probably also go with the associated diff/moly greases as per the other thread on here.

Re threadlock - yes, the Durango stuff certainly seems to work well! Is it plastic safe though :confused:

I've also got a good selection of the 'usual' loctite threadlocks in red/blue and purple so should be well covered on any metal to metal duties.
