10th and 8th national costs

Hi all, just wondered if any of you who have done 10th and 8th nationals can shed a glimmer of light on this for me please.
.......Which one do you think would cost the most to do??

i know there would be lots of variables, but just want a rough idea.

I've been asking a few drivers the same question, and the answer I've got back is that once everything is initially purchased, 8th seems to be the cheapest regarding running costs.:)

I returned to 8th nats last year after a 3year break, 8th is cheep:thumbsup:, once you have the car and engine etc sorted it's only realy fuel and tyres.Tyres are as costly as you want to make it, I run a tight budget and will use no more than 2 sets a meeting 1set if I can get away with it:blush:, I know my ability, I'm a mid field driver and it's realy not worth me using a set every time:D. one engine should last a season with ease ( depending on how much club racing you do between nats).

But in the end it depends on who you speek to, some may spend thousands,If you have great ability it may be worth it.

If you break it down just on nationals based on what i have done i see it as follows 6 1/10th 2day nats v 7 nitro 1 day nats and one 2 day nat


Travel costs more for 8th as there as 2 more venues to get to
Hotels 1/10th way more, 1/8th are only sunday meetings so depending on location you can travel to and from in one day, 1/10th meetings is normally Friday/Sat night in a hotel or at least sat hotel
Tyres 1/8th costs less in my opinion, 12 1/10th days of racing v 9 days 8th racing. I tend to use the same amount of tyres on a day if i am running 1/10th or 1/8th. Dependant on what brand you run 1/8th tyres can be way more expensive v a pair of 1/10th tyres though
Entry fees 8th is higher but you do get alot more track time especially if you bump 1 final
start up costs really is your call but 2wd + 4wd v 8th i would say 1/10th more expensive
Fuel does not cost alot and to be honest is not much more than you would spend on running a generator for a day at a 1/10th meeting

You will have fun for sure!! the best bit for me is your day is not over until your final is finished, i have qualified in a D main and made it to the A, can't do that yet in 1/10th :thumbsup::thumbsup:

I think you should compare running only one class in 1/10th vs 1 class in 1/8th. You don't have to run both classes at nationals. Then divide total cost by the number of races. Of course running 2 classes will be more expensive, as you need 2 cars, 2 speedo's, 2 servo's, 2 recievers, 2 motors,... Depending on what cars you run you might even need different wheels for both cars and so on.

With todays lipo's and brushless motors, it would surprise me if 1/8th is cheaper, but hey I never ran 1/8th :D

Griff, please remember the belgian GP is 1/10th :thumbsup:

We've looked at it, and we are going to give 8th a go this year, only regionals and the odd one off meeting etc. then look at nats next year.

Yes if you take in all the start up costs then theres not much between them. But I think unless you're a top driver then 8th is looking cheaper at the moment as far as 'running costs' go.

I did last years 10th nats without staying in single hotel! All the 10th national venues provide camping as it's over 2 days...and that's all part of the fun of 10th for me!

Griff, as mentioned difficult to compare due to two day meetings for 10th and single for most the 8th. I think Reevsey summed that up quite well.

Running costs I reckon are about the same with tyres + fuel.
As you know I don't exactly splash the new tyres around and I don't think you need to, but having a control tyre does make 10th more appealing.

Plus the 8th cars need more cleaning :eh?: Not really my cup of tea :blush:

But the track time for nitro is a major factor in why people race it - no doubt.

The deciding factor for me was that the 8th cars just don't feel precise/sharp enough for me compared to 10th, but that's probably my 12th heritage coming in...
