Hey there,

I have just got a DB01R and have questions about just how beneficial it would be to upgrade from the kit ones to the Wide Operating. I was told it is actually less durable. Would someone be able to clear this up?

Thanks!

I havenīt heard that the WO ones are less durable but i would suggest to drive the kit ones at first, and if they are worn, replace them with WO ones to see the difference.
I have a DB01R too and just put in new pins and changed the holes on the stock Universals and if they are worn i will try the WO ones and decide which ones will be the ones for the future.

I club race my DB-01 and have been running both the front and rear WO universals for 6+ months now. Zero problems so far..

My guess is they are equally strong to the standard universals if not stronger.. I think some people are weary of the replacement uprights used for the front WO universals. They may appear more vulnerable, but I have yet to break one.

I cannot see them being more operational at a wider angle, when they look to be the same as the originals. They are not double cardan joints or anything like what xray, HB and losi has.

Main difference is when you put on throttle when the car is in the air. DB-01R sounds awfull without WO's if you didn't add extra limiters to the rear suspension travel.

On my DB-01 i have WO's in the front and normal in the Rear but with AC shocktower and i never had weird sounds like that.

What also contributed to me posting this is due to the fact all of Tamiya's flagship 4WD 1/10th scale buggies come with the standard universals. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe from the DB01R, TRF501X, TRF501X WE, TRF511 and the TRF502 all come with standard universals - if the WO universals are performance enhancing over the standard would they not come with the TRF models?:eh?:

You are right BUT the TRF511 is the only one that comes with WO Universals as standard.

For those that don't know, the main difference is that the WO shafts use a reversed cup design like the origional B4. (the cup is on the driveshaft, not on the stub axle)

I thought it was better to have the cup on the stub shaft as that is the way most cars seem to be going and why the B4.1 has them now but tamiya must think it makes no difference and gives more room to have a bigger cup to give a wider angle drive.

Wonder why the 502 doesn't have them.
