View Full Version : Replacing my tranny LED

A little while ago the nice blue LED on my KO Esprit 2 Type R gave up the ghost.
Has anyone replaced their LED before? Is it nice and simple wrt the soldering/PCB location or is it a PITA? Does anyone know the exact type of LED it needs to be replaced with?
I'm not bad with electronics and soldering but don't want to do it if there is a risk of doing the radio some damage.

No one?
It's a simple job, the LED is attached to the case, wires go to the board.
I'd be surprised if the LED itself has failed, more likely to be a failed joint in the wiring.

It is fairly easy - did mine. Radio comes apart easy, think there may be a small circuit board with it and a few other components mounted on screwed to the front half. Remove it, desolder the old LED (Remembering the correct leg position - look into the LED, and look for the leg which has the biggest bit moulded inside, this will need to correspond with the new one) solder new one in, then trim the excess leg length.
I have 19 of the 20 LED's left which I brought of the bay. It was a while back now. So it's all from memory. But I do know it isn't hard! The answer you are looking for.

Another quick question. Is the standard LED a 12v unit? Or is the voltage reduced somewhere in the circuitry so that only ~4v is delivered to the LED? As there is no visible resistor and most available 3mm LED#s seem to be of the ~4v variety.

PM me your address, I'll stick one in the post - can't remember the spec, but the one's I sourced at the time worked perfect. And as 19 of the 20 I brought have sat in a drawer for two years now... I guess I can spare one.
