There is a possiblity that Coventry may run 2 different tracks for the F345 finals this year. One day on Astro, other on the Grass. This is for a few reasons.

1, Saves the grass track from getting to rutted and worn for the following day.
2, Less advantage over peole only doing the one day.
3, There were quite a few non local drivers last year that showed a lot of interest on running on the Astro track.

So, with this in mind, what would you F345 drivers prefer to race on, 2wd on Astro and 4wd on grass or vica versa...... Over to you ......

i'd go 2wd astro and 4wd grass. I liked the look of the astro track the other year, and the grass on the Sunday was pretty bare.

My pref would be 2wd Astro, 4wd grass but would be happy either way really.
Maybe start a poll ?

Purely from the wear on the grass track,i would have 4wd on the astro:lol:

4wd on astro

Just a thought but maybe an idea to start a poll on this to get a clear vote.

Are the forms online yet for entry?

You have to qualify through your Regionals.

Why not just run both days on the astro track? Surely that makes more sense? And just change the layout overnight? :eh?:

HarlowS
30-05-2011, 01:48 PM
Because it gives people more variety on track surface and caters for drivers that like astro and others that like grass. Also it takes any track and surface knowledge away from people who did the Saturday.

Surely that makes more sense :p

You have to qualify through your Regionals.

http://www.brca.org/?q=sections/subsections/pages/2011-end-season-finals-coventry-and-silverstone-entry-forms/12344

entry forms are on line on the new BRCA web site...and yes you have to qualify through your regionals but i believe most entrants get in as not all qualifiers take up their allocation

I tell you want it will be ... cold and windy ... Cov is always cold and windy even on the nicest summers day, something to do with being on a high sited airfield.

My advice is to take warm clothes and leave the shorts at home!

As for the track, even if it rains the astro doesn't throw up too much sand so the cars stay relatively clean.

Looking like I might have to miss this event which I am gutted about, especially as the 4wd is on the grass :(

Here are some that were posted on the coventry website when the astro was being relayed

http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150211376253688.345794.621608687&l=9765ad9e7e

As for Coventry if the wind is blowing it will be cold no mater how sunny it is.

Looking forward to the meeting should be interesting:thumbsup:

Hi All.
There is a small reserve list for this event currently made up of:
Mid West F3's - 3 in 2wd and 2 in 4wd,
South East F4's - 2 in 2wd and 2 in 4wd,
Mid West F5's - 4 in 2wd,
Mid South F5's - 2in 2wd and 2 in 4wd.
The relevant Regional Reps have been in touch with these drivers so everyone who is entered but not yet "in" know they are on the reserve list.
All other driver's who have entered (that is actually entered via their regional rep
rather than merely thought they had entered) are "in" the event.
The event is currently "full" with 120 drivers in both 2wd and 4wd.

Ibbotson and White F5's from Mid South should make the A and a couple of old school F3's from East of England, Watson and Crockart may turn out to be dark horses. In 4wd, Ed Kerry from the South East should frighten a few. Also Charlie Ware won 4wd last year and has probably improved since then.

Whats the astro like grip wise? high, med or low ?

is the camping site close by the tracks (ie pit area) ?

MSH
11-09-2011, 03:38 PM
Yes the back part of the track is slightly further away! The main straight is now where the old rostrum and pit lane used to be. The new rostrum location has been moved slightly into the grass track covering the really bumpy section and man hole.

Personally I think there is more grip as they have used new astro turf. It's not as high grip as silverstone in my opinion though.

Well i'm nothing to do with CMCC, so I could be wrong, but I'd guess it would be behind the dirt track (to the left of the grass track if you're stood on the rostrum).

Just returned from racing in the shortcourse nats in the wind, Fun!
The new layout on the Astro has made more options for 1/10th circuits and Yes the back straight is further away , the planned layout does not include the back straight.
The Video clip was still work in progress but does give you an idea of the new sections.
Grip is higher than the old astro turf.

As your commentator for the weekend (alongside Yardy providing Sleigh or DC don't turn up) I'm looking for some 'information' about the racers. The F3,4,5 finals can be hard to commentate on due to alot of the drivers coming along to their only National of the year.

If you want any special mentions, stories or general banter (good clean fun, not over the top banter) then pop over and see me. I promise not to put drivers off, it's not what we're there for, but instead we will try to add to what will be a throughly enjoyable weekend for all at a great Mid West venue

PS: Those going to win?

What are the tyre recommendations for the astro and grass?

Schumacher yellows in the dry and ballistic greens for the wet?

I have found also running Ballistics in dry conditions are good aswell offer alot of grip and stability in the car but the wear rate isnt as good as Schumacher yellows,

Ed Kerry won 4wd with Andy Pearson was 2nd (from 10th on the grid!) and Ashley Caunt was 3rd.

I have never known for 3 legs like it today. After Ed had won the first 2 legs it was feasable that any of the other 9 drivers could have finished 2nd! C-Cup was 10th after 2 legs but had a 5, it was so random!

Andy Pearson took the last leg to jump to 2nd.

Good job everyone on what was a very much improved Coventry track since I was last there, superb stuff

Good days racing, nice to back on track after so long (although super super rusty!)

As for the gibber-jabber from across the PA I'm split really. I think both guys did an amazing job from a spectators point of view, really added some energy to the event. From a drivers point of view though I really struggle to maintain focused when I hear my name over the PA ... almost asked them not to mention me at all when I was racing. My problem, nothing to do with them .... will take ear plugs from the next event and get somebody to wave a flag or something when I need to start LOL :D

Errrmmm, absolutley, i dont really think its fair to have an ex F1 from however many years ago they were an F1 to be able to compete at either the 345s or the F2s.

Isnt the 345 competition supposed to be a competition of 345 standard drivers? Its a bit unfair if an ex F1 comes as they are more than likely to be top 5, im not having a dig at any ex F1 driver who has won recently or in the past, just my opinion!

Again F1s from how long ago etc?

We've got some ex F1 TC racers at our club and they've struggled. My point being is that just because they are an F1 in another class doesn't mean they can deliver in 1/10th off road.

Equally we have another F1 TC driver at TORCH who has adjusted and is fast.

My mate is also an ex TC IC star, but has long since retired so he's turned his hand to off road, so should he not be permitted???

Charlie Frazer said to Ashley its about time someone not ex F1 driver to get the F345 trophey . Most of the Names on the trophey were ex F1 that had had time off from racing. They are still bloody quick drivers if they were F1s at sometime in there racing career.

Not taking sides on the F1/F2 issue but if you feel strongly about it then propose a rule change at the Section AGM.

RudeTony
20-09-2011, 06:05 AM
F1 1/8th level. He's v fast and won epr winter series last year. Even so it's a different class.

In 1/8th there is no formulas like we have in 1/10th.
I am sure there is a rule that if a F1 within the past 5 years then one cannot compete. Then there is another rule demoting of peoples formulars so that makes them eligible in years to come.
I understand many thinking that if once a F1 driver then you have a certain amount of skill but i can assure you that if you have a break away from the sport, it takes in my opinion even more effort to get to the level one was therefore the rules are OK.
Like someone else has already suggested - if you don't like the rule then suggest another for the AGM that is nearly upon us.

If there is a rule that needs to be changed or added is that all competotors for these events (F3/4/5 and F2s) should at least compete at the regional events of that year to qualify. Even at only the one meeting. That rule is not currently in place!!

reg
20-09-2011, 07:07 AM
would it not be better to get your F grade after the regionals, then enter the finals for that grade, rather than be given the F2 for next year, but be an F3,4,5 finals on last years F grade,if an old F1 races through the year they will be in the right final at the end of the year,

RudeTony

It would make sense and would be true to the time frame too but I am sure there is a reason for the F grades to be active FROM the beginning of the following year.
I agree though - it should be from the end of the regionals and Nationals for the end of year FINALS

Let's be honest you're not going to please / satisfy everyones requirements.

I know it only my option but if a returning racer decided to enter a eos final they can only drop one formula as surely they is a chance for them if they are a little rusty but should still be able to race with others with the same level of skill.

I dunno how the Brca would keep track of this tho !

Charlie Frazer said to Ashley its about time someone not ex F1 driver to get the F345 trophey . Most of the Names on the trophey were ex F1 that had had time off from racing. They are still bloody quick drivers if they were F1s at sometime in there racing career.

Didn't Charlie Ware win last year? i wasn't aware he was ex-F1 (if he is my apologies)

Hi All.
I am trying to pick up on a number of points here.
1. The 1/10th section year runs from January 1st to 31st Dec. to allow all regional reps time to administer their region, calculate regional results and F Grades prior to verification by the Section for publication ,usually October/November time each year for the following year. Admin takes time and there are 11 Regions to coordinate, so this would be impossible to achieve prior to the End of Season Finals each year.
2. It is a fact that the F345 event is often won by returning drivers. The current rules forbid any ex-F1 entering within the previous five years F grade time frame (effectively six years). Indeed any F1 who has achieved a top 15 1/10th Off-Road National Result (top 15 for a series) can never enter the F345's.
These are the restrictions which are currently in place but as has been said - rule changes can be made at the AGM each year.
3. How do the BRCA 1/10th Off-Road Section keep track on drivers formula's etc over time - meticulous records kept by the Section Chairman.
I hope this answers a few concerns.
Regards

Hi Big G.
You are of course right and I said the same thing to Charlie Ware last year at Silverstone.

EoE had a good day. Our intention was to spread as many drivers across as many finals as possible and to ensure that no-one from the our region deprived anyone from another region of a trophy. In that mission we succeeded brilliantly (even if it is a little post-hoc in it's mission!)

Track was a tricky bugger for some of us non-astro folk but started to get the hang of it in the end. Especially the double going away from you, blind drop and tight corner. 4 heats and 2 laps it took to get that nailed consistently, but made it all the more satisfying!

High points - getting the hang of it in the final to get from way-out-back-dog-last to threatening 1st place. One more lap!

Low points - Getting massively outqualified by my own car then watching it get demolished by the same driver at the end of the straight - albeit very funny at the same time.

Good fun, really enjoyed it. The commentary in the finals was brilliant!

Well done to the organisers, especially the young lads stuck in that tent, scrutineering ALL DAY.

I don't think the comments are aimed at ed as a person he has only done what he was allowed to do , alot of ppl have said well done. I think the comments are aimed at the Brca rules , as said unless someone puts something forward nothing will get done .

Cheers for point number 3 Charlie .

Hi All again.
My point 2. in post 219 isn't quite right. F1's finishing in the top 15 can not drop below F3. That is the rule, not as I said that they could not enter the F345's.
Sorry, I was working from memory which is always dangerous.
Regards.

I'm not complaining about Ed Kerry winning at all but I don't think that an ex F1 should not be allowed to compete at all, regardless of how many years it was that they were an f1, I congratulated Ed personally on his win, it was nice to race with somebody with his capabilities all day in the same heat!
How come you are not allowed to comment anymore on oople without people thinking that you are being a moan or whinging, I'm far from that, I work in a mans world and if there's a problem we talk about it!
Anyway....I'm off to play football with the 10 year olds cos I can beat them!
Ps, when and where's the AGM?
